This paper studies isometric immersions of space forms by means of a hierarchy of finite dimensional integrable systems in Lax form on loop algebras.Comment: 15 pages, latex2e, postscript available at http://www_sfb288.math.tu-berlin.de/preprints.htm

    Curved flats in symmetric spaces

    Get PDF
In this paper we study maps (curved flats) into symmetric spaces which are tangent at each point to a flat of the symmetric space. Important examples of such maps arise from isometric immersions of space forms into space forms via their Gauss maps. Further examples are found in conformal geometry, e.g. the curved flats obtained from isothermic surfaces and conformally flat 3-folds in the 4-sphere. Curved flats admit a 1-parameter family of deformations (spectral parameter) which enables us to make contact to integrable system theory. In fact, we give a recipe to construct curved flats (and thus the above mentioned geometric objects) from a hierarchy of finite dimensional algebraically completely integrable flows.Comment: 9 pages, latex2e, no figures, also available at http://www_sfb288.math.tu-berlin.de/preprints.htm

Quaternionic holomorphic geometry: Pluecker formula, Dirac eigenvalue estimates and energy estimates of harmonic 2-tori

    Get PDF
The paper develops the fundamentals of quaternionic holomorphic curve theory. The holomorphic functions in this theory are conformal maps from a Riemann surface into the 4-sphere, i.e., the quaternionic projective line. Basic results such as the Riemann-Roch Theorem for quaternionic holomorphic vector bundles, the Kodaira embedding and the Pluecker relations for linear systems are proven. Interpretations of these results in terms of the differential geometry of surfaces in 3- and 4-space are hinted at throughout the paper. Applications to estimates of the Willmore functional on constant mean curvature tori, respectively energy estimates of harmonic 2-tori, and to Dirac eigenvalue estimates on Riemannian spin bundles in dimension 2 are given.Comment: 70 pages, 1 figur

A class of overdetermined systems defined by tableaux: involutiveness and Cauchy problem

This article addresses the question of involutiveness and discusses the initial value problem for a class of overdetermined systems of partial differential equations which arise in the theory of integrable systems and are defined by tableaux.Comment: 14 page

Checklist for the Publication of Open Access Journals at Research Institutions

    Get PDF
Research institutions increasingly act as supporting organisations and service providers for scholarly publications. Professional publishing of Open Access journals is possible without recourse to commercial suppliers by means of the internet and free software. This requires basic know how which is presented in form of this checklist. Over the past few years many research institutions have begun to establish advisory services that may be consulted in addition to this checklist. Occasionally they even offer technical infrastructures that enable editors to focus on content and quality of their journals. At the same time this checklist may act as supplementary material for consulting sessions that research services (libraries, university publishers …) offer to editors

Checkliste „Open Access policies“: Analyse von Open Access policies öffentlicher Universitäten in Österreich

    Get PDF
This checklist provides an overview of the Open Access policies implemented at Austrian universities and extramural research institutions. Furthermore, the polices adopted at nine public universities are analyzed and the respective text modules are categorized thematically. The second part of the checklist presents measures for the promotion of Open Access following the implementation of an Open Access policy

On the Solvability of the Transvection group of Extrinsic Symplectic Symmetric Spaces

    Get PDF
Let MM be a symplectic symmetric space, and let ı:M→V\imath : M \to V be an extrinsic symplectic symmetric immersion, i.e., (V,Ω)(V, \Omega) is a symplectic vector space and ı\imath is an injective symplectic immersion such that for each point p∈Mp \in M, the geodesic symmetry in pp is compatible with the reflection in the affine normal space at ı(p)\imath(p). We show that the existence of such an immersion implies that the transvection group of MM is solvable.Comment: 15 page
