Lead and Zinc contamination of surface sediments in the main harbours of the Galician Rias
The concentration ranges and degree of contamination of lead and zinc in the four principal harbour areas of the northwest Iberian Peninsula have been defined from 130 surface sediment samples (A partir de la fracción fina en 130 muestras de sedimento superficial se han cuantificado los niveles de concentración para plomo y cinc en las rías donde se encuentran los principales puertos de la costa gallega. Los patrones de distribución de Pb y Zn en el sedimento muestran altos contenidos en el litoral próximo a las áreas de actividad portuaria y astilleros: las concentraciones llegan hasta 140, 160, 160 y 320 mg·kg-1 para Pb y hasta 150, 380, 600 y 1960 mg·kg-1 para Zn en Pontevedra, Coruña, Ferrol y Vigo, respectivamente. En base a sus niveles naturales, establecidos mediante cuatro testigos de sedimento, se han definido sus grados de contaminación mediante factores de enriquecimiento. Consecuentemente, se puede definir entre moderada y considerable la contaminación de Pb y Zn en los puertos de La Coruña y Pontevedra, así como severa en Ferrol y Vigo. En otras zonas de las rías la contaminación normalmente decrece, como suele ocurrir en estuarios y costas de nuestro planeta donde existen puertos o astilleros
A modified volumetric energy density–based approach for porosity assessment in additive manufacturing process design
Soundness of additively manufactured parts depends on a lot of process and geometrical parameters. A wrong process design leads to defects such as lack of fusion or keyhole porosity that have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the printed parts. Process parameter optimization is thus a formidable challenge that requires in general a huge amount of experimental data. Among the others, heat source power and scan speed are the most defects-affecting parameters to be optimized. The energy density is used in literature to quantify their combination. Unfortunately, in different works it was demonstrated that it fails if used as design parameter mainly because it does not take into account the material properties and the interaction between heat source and the powder bed. In this contribution, a modified volumetric energy density equation that takes into account the powder-heat source interaction to optimize the combination of power-scan speed values for porosity assessment in powder bed fusion process design is proposed and verified on both AlSi10Mg alloy and Maraging steel 300
Variable stars in the open cluster NGC 6791 and its surrounding field
Aims: This work presents a high--precision variability survey in the field of
the old, super metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791.
Methods: The data sample consists of more than 75,000 high-precision CCD time
series measurements in the V band obtained mainly at the Canada-France-Hawaii
Telescope, with additional data from S. Pedro Martir and Loiano observatories,
over a time span of ten nights. The field covers an area of 42x28 arcmin^2.
Results: We have discovered 260 new variables and re-determined periods and
amplitudes of 70 known variable stars. By means of a photometric evaluation of
the membership in NGC 6791, and a preliminary membership based on the proper
motions, we give a full description of the variable content of the cluster and
surrounding field in the range 16<V<23.5. Accurate periods can be given for the
variables with P<4.0 d, while for ones with longer periods the limited
time-baseline hampered precise determinations. We categorized the entire sample
as follows: 6 pulsating, 3 irregular, 3 cataclysmic, 89 rotational variables
and 61 eclipsing systems; moreover, we detected 168 candidate variables for
which we cannot give a variability class since their periods are much longer
than our time baseline.
Conclusions: On the basis of photometric considerations, and of the positions
of the stars with respect to the center of the cluster, we inferred that 11 new
variable stars are likely members of the cluster, for 22 stars the membership
is doubtful and 137 are likely non-members. We also detected an outburst of
about 3 mag in the light curve of a very faint blue star belonging to the
cluster and we suggest that this star could be a new U Gem (dwarf nova)
cataclysmic variable.Comment: 24 pages, 19 Figures, A&A accepte
GeoCLEF 2006: the CLEF 2006 Ccross-language geographic information retrieval track overview
After being a pilot track in 2005, GeoCLEF advanced to be a regular track within CLEF 2006. The
purpose of GeoCLEF is to test and evaluate cross-language geographic information retrieval (GIR): retrieval for
topics with a geographic specification. For GeoCLEF 2006, twenty-five search topics were defined by the
organizing groups for searching English, German, Portuguese and Spanish document collections. Topics were
translated into English, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese. Several topics in 2006 were significantly
more geographically challenging than in 2005. Seventeen groups submitted 149 runs (up from eleven groups and
117 runs in GeoCLEF 2005). The groups used a variety of approaches, including geographic bounding boxes,
named entity extraction and external knowledge bases (geographic thesauri and ontologies and gazetteers)
Reduction of Lie-Jordan Banach algebras and quantum states
A theory of reduction of Lie-Jordan Banach algebras with respect to either a
Jordan ideal or a Lie-Jordan subalgebra is presented. This theory is compared
with the standard reduction of C*-algebras of observables of a quantum system
in the presence of quantum constraints. It is shown that the later corresponds
to the particular instance of the reduction of Lie-Jordan Banach algebras with
respect to a Lie-Jordan subalgebra as described in this paper. The space of
states of the reduced Lie-Jordan Banach algebras is described in terms of
equivalence classes of extensions to the full algebra and their GNS
representations are characterized in the same way. A few simple examples are
discussed that illustrates some of the main results
A comparative study of online translation services for cross language Information retrieval
Technical advances and its increasing availability, mean that Machine Translation (MT) is now widely used for the translation of search queries in multilingual search tasks. A number of free-to-use high-quality online MT systems are now available and, although imperfect in their translation behaviour, are found to produce good performance in CrossLanguage Information Retrieval (CLIR) applications. Users
of these MT systems in CLIR tasks generally assume that they all behave similarly in CLIR applications, and the choice of MT system is often made on the basis of convenience. We present a set of experiments which compare the impact of
applying two of the best known online systems, Google and Bing translation, for query translation across multiple language pairs and for two very different CLIR tasks. Our experiments show that the MT systems perform differently on average for different tasks and language pairs, but more significantly for different individual queries. We examine the differing translation behaviour of these tools and seek
to draw conclusions in terms of their suitability for use in different settings
A double-lined spectroscopic orbit for the young star HD 34700
We report high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the young star HD
34700, which confirm it to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary. We derive an
accurate orbital solution with a period of 23.4877 +/- 0.0013 days and an
eccentricity of e = 0.2501 +/- 0.0068. The stars are found to be of similar
mass (M2/M1 = 0.987 +/- 0.014) and luminosity. We derive also the effective
temperatures (5900 K and 5800 K) and projected rotational velocities (28 km/s
and 22 km/s) of the components. These values of v sin i are much higher than
expected for main-sequence stars of similar spectral type (G0), and are not due
to tidal synchronization. We discuss also the indicators of youth available for
the object. Although there is considerable evidence that the system is young
--strong infrared excess, X-ray emission, Li I 6708 absorption (0.17 Angstroms
equivalent width), H alpha emission (0.6 Angstroms), rapid rotation-- the
precise age cannot yet be established because the distance is unknown.Comment: 17 pages, including 2 figures and 2 tables. Accepted for publication

Suppression and Enhancement of Soliton Switching During Interaction in Periodically Twisted Birefringent Fiber
Soliton interaction in periodically twisted birefringent optical fibers has
been analysed analytically with refernce to soliton switching. For this purpose
we construct the exact general two-soliton solution of the associated coupled
system and investigate its asymptotic behaviour. Using the results of our
analytical approach we point out that the interaction can be used as a switch
to suppress or to enhance soliton switching dynamics, if one injects
multi-soliton as an input pulse in the periodically twisted birefringent fiber.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Latex, submitted to Phys. Rev.
