Experimental and numerical study of the accuracy of flame-speed measurements for methane/air combustion in a slot burner

Measuring the velocities of premixed laminar flames with precision remains a controversial issue in the combustion community. This paper studies the accuracy of such measurements in two-dimensional slot burners and shows that while methane/air flame speeds can be measured with reasonable accuracy, the method may lack precision for other mixtures such as hydrogen/air. Curvature at the flame tip, strain on the flame sides and local quenching at the flame base can modify local flame speeds and require correc- tions which are studied using two-dimensional DNS. Numerical simulations also provide stretch, dis- placement and consumption flame speeds along the flame front. For methane/air flames, DNS show that the local stretch remains small so that the local consumption speed is very close to the unstretched premixed flame speed. The only correction needed to correctly predict flame speeds in this case is due to the finite aspect ratio of the slot used to inject the premixed gases which induces a flow acceleration in the measurement region (this correction can be evaluated from velocity measurement in the slot section or from an analytical solution). The method is applied to methane/air flames with and without water addition and results are compared to experimental data found in the literature. The paper then discusses the limitations of the slot-burner method to measure flame speeds for other mixtures and shows that it is not well adapted to mixtures with a Lewis number far from unity, such as hydrogen/air flames

Propostes de prevenció i formació dels navegants per millorar la seguretat marítima i disminuir les assistències de salvament marítim

L’objectiu del projecte ha estat trobar estratègies de prevenció i formació específica per millorar la seguretat dels navegants de la nàutica d’esbarjo i per reduir les assistències de Salvament Marítim, les quals han anat en augment en els últims anys. S’ha comprovat que la majoria de les emergències ateses per Salvament marítim es podrien haver evitat. S’ha seguit una metodologia de recerca sobretot a través d’internet, entrevistes a diferents protagonistes del sector nàutic i també s’han consultat d’altres treballs relacionats amb el tema tractat. La nàutica d’esbarjo a Espanya representa més del 50% de les emergències que atenen els serveis de Salvament Marítim, majoritàriament embarcacions a motor i motos aquàtiques. El 2015 va haver un increment del 13% respecte l’any anterior d’actuacions de Salvament Marítim només en les embarcacions d’esbarjo. Les matriculacions en el sector de la nàutica d’esbarjo s’estan recuperant, i sobretot les matriculacions de les embarcacions de lloguer, que han experimentant un augment mig del 35%. Els plans estratègics per la prevenció, seguretat marítima i formació als navegants dels països estudiats, inclouen una recerca prèvia per aplicar-ho més tard als seus programes, col·laboració entre els diferents estaments involucrats en la nàutica d’esbarjo i aplicació de la reglamentació. Alguns d’aquest països demostren una disminució dels sinistres marítims. És recomanable un patrocini o finançament econòmic específic per als efectes de planificar campanyes de prevenció i conscienciació al lloc on es produeix la pràctica d’activitats nàutiques. Les propostes plantejades recullen algunes idees d’aquest països juntament amb propostes pròpies generades a partir de la investigació prèvia i de la situació del nostre entorn

Differences in Fertility Behavior and Uncertainty: An Economic Theory of the Minority Status Hypothesis

We revisit the question of why fertility behaviors and educational decisions appear to vary systematically across ethnic groups. We assess the possibility that fertility differentials across groups remain even though their socio-economic characteristics are similar. More specifically, we consider that parents' fertility decisions are affected by the uncertainty concerning the future economic status of their off-spring. We assume that this uncertainty varies across groups and is linked to the size of the group one belongs to. The transition path gives support to the minority status hypothesis according to which minority members usually have a higher fertility facing low potential for social mobility but may in some instances strategically decrease their fertility.Fertility Differentials, Minority Status, Uncertainty

Adherence to cultural norms and economic incentives: evidence from fertility timing decisions

I analyze the interplay between culture and economic incentives in decision-making. To this end, I study fertility timing decisions of second generation migrant women to France and the US. While I confirm that originating from a high fertility country correlates to having larger families, I also find that it does not predict earlier entry into motherhood. I propose a model that rationalizes these findings in which decisions are the result of a trade-off between an economic cost-benefit analysis and a cultural norm. The model predicts that decisions with a higher cost of deviation from the economic optimum should be less prone to cultural influence. This is consistent with substantial evidence showing that the timing of the first birth bears much larger costs for mothers in terms of labor market outcomes than that of subsequent births

Young radical nationalists : Prisoners of their own myth ?

How and why do some young people become street fighters who rally behind a political ideology? This paper attempts to explore this complex issue. First, using ethnographic data, we examine political and violent socialization, and its connections to and influences upon individual, peer and discourse conditions. Second, we explore how individual predispositions, i.e. those dispositions acquired from a certain family, social class or peer group in an ideological background, do or do not constitute requisites for young men to turn to nationalist street fighting, such as the Kale Borroka in the Spanish Basque country. Finally, we show that the current representation of young activists is not a mythological construct, rather an extension of complex processes in early socialization, a product of virtual and physical interactions raisonnantes with the police organizations, and lastly, a form of self-referential violence

En aquest article es presenten unes primeres conclusions sobre quins són els dubtes més freqüents formulats al cercador de l'Optimot i sobre les fonts o obres de referència més consultades. En un segon nivell, també s'aborda la manera com utilitzen l'Optimot els usuaris. El material de base per a l'anàlisi d'aquestes qüestions són els informes extrets de la plataforma de treball de l'Optimot sobre les cerques dels usuaris (les paraules més cercades, les fonts més seleccionades, entre d'altres).This article presents the first conclusions as regards the most frequent doubts presented to the Optimot search engine, and the reference sources or works most consulted. At a second level, it also looks at the way users employ Optimot.
