    Interplane charge dynamics in a valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory of cuprate superconductors

    We present calculations of the interplane charge dynamics in the normal state of cuprate superconductors within the valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory. We show that by varying the hole doping, the c-axis optical conductivity and resistivity dramatically change character, going from metallic-like at large doping to insulating-like at low-doping. We establish a clear connection between the behavior of the c-axis optical and transport properties and the destruction of coherent quasiparticles as the pseudogap opens in the antinodal region of the Brillouin zone at low doping. We show that our results are in good agreement with spectroscopic and optical experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Light Microscopy Measurements of Ice Recrystallization in Frozen Corn Starch Pastes Using Isothermal Freeze Fixation

    Isothermal freeze fixation was used to analyze ice recrystallization by light microscopy in a 10 % (W/W) frozen corn starch paste during storage at temperatures in the range of -5 to -20 °C. Different formulations were tested in order to obtain a suitable fixative for this method of indirect observation of the ice crystals. A solution of formaldehyde, ethanol and water (10:45:45 V:V) was selected because it minimized substitution-induced distortion and contraction of the matrix. The diffusion coefficients of the selected fixative in the frozen system were measured at different temperatures in conditions of unidirectional mass transfer in a semi - infinite medium. The activation energy for diffusion was determined (Ea = 95.11 ± I. 15 KJ/mol). Fixation times for the frozen starch paste at different temperatures were predicted from a mathematical model for unidirectional mass transfer with a discontinuous diffusion coefficient. Matrix contraction during the different stages of the freeze fixation method was evaluated. Recrystallization of ice in frozen corn starch pastes during storage was analyzed by the measurement of the changes in ice crystal equivalent diameters on the micrographs. A kinetic equation for recrystallization was fitted to the experimental data to obtain the corresponding parameters. Contraction of the matrix affects the kinetic constants but has no effect on activation energy. The effect of recrystallization during fixation on ice crystal measurements was not significant

    We use a constrained Monte Carlo technique to analyze ultrametric features of a 4 dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass with quenched couplings J=\pm 1.     The economics of Theocracy

    This paper models theocracy as a regime where the clergy in power retains knowledge of the cost of political production but which is potentially incompetent or corrupt. This is contrasted with a secular regime where government is contracted out to a secular ruler, and hence the church loses the possibility to observe costs and creates for itself a hidden-information agency problem. The church is free to choose between regimes – a make-or-buy choice – and we look for the range of environmental parameters that are most conducive to the superiority of theocracy and therefore to its occurrence and persistence, despite its disabilities. Numerical solution of the model indicates that the optimal environment for a theocracy is likely to be one in which the “bad” (high-cost) state is disastrously bad but the probability of its occurrence is not very high. A broad review of the historical evidence yields some suggestive support to the predictions of the model. Finally, the model is shown to be applicable to the make-or-buy-government choices of other groups, such as organized labor and the military

    First order Mott transition at zero temperature in two dimensions: Variational plaquette study

    The nature of the metal-insulator Mott transition at zero temperature has been discussed for a number of years. Whether it occurs through a quantum critical point or through a first order transition is expected to profoundly influence the nature of the finite temperature phase diagram. In this paper, we study the zero temperature Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the square lattice with the variational cluster approximation. This takes into account the influence of antiferromagnetic short-range correlations. By contrast to single-site dynamical mean-field theory, the transition turns out to be first order even at zero temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, version 2 with additional results for 8 bath site
