    Simple Technique for source reflection coefficient measurement while characterizing active devices

    This paper describes a simple, yet rigorous technique for fast and accurate determination of the source reflection coefficient during the characterization of microwave active devices. The solution consists in measuring the waves at the DUT reference plane under two different bias conditions. Since the DUT small signal impedance value depends on the bias voltage, the waves at the DUT input port changes as well. We proved that their measurements give enough information to compute the source reflection coefficient with accuracy suitable for most applications. The correction for systematic errors is based in the traditional error-box model and it does not require any exotic calibration procedures. Experimental results are presented and compared to data obtained with more traditional technique

    Apsidal motion in massive close binary systems. I. HD 165052 an extreme case?

    We present a new set of radial-velocity measurements of the spectroscopic binary HD 165052 obtained by disentangling of high-resolution optical spectra. The longitude of the periastron (60 +- 2 degrees) shows a variation with respect to previous studies. We have determined the apsidal motion rate of the system (12.1 +- 0.3 degree/yr), which was used to calculate the absolute masses of the binary components: M_1 = 22.5 +- 1.0 and M_2 = 20.5 +- 0.9 solar masses. Analysing the separated spectra we have re-classified the components as O7Vz and O7.5Vz stars

    Radiatively Induced Lorentz and Gauge Symmetry Violation in Electrodynamics with Varying alpha

    A time-varying fine structure constant alpha(t) could give rise to Lorentz- and CPT-violating changes to the vacuum polarization, which would affect photon propagation. Such changes to the effective action can violate gauge invariance, but they are otherwise permitted. However, in the minimal theory of varying alpha, no such terms are generated at lowest order. At second order, vacuum polarization can generate an instability--a Lorentz-violating analogue of a negative photon mass squared -m^2 proportional to alpha [(d alpha/dt) / alpha]^2 log (Lambda^2), where Lambda is the cutoff for the low-energy effective theory.Comment: 14 page
