    Spontaneous emission of an atom near an oscillating mirror

    We investigate the spontaneous emission of one atom placed near an oscillating reflecting plate. We consider the atom modeled as a two-level system, interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, in the presence of the oscillating mirror. We suppose that the plate oscillates adiabatically, so that the time-dependence of the interaction Hamiltonian is entirely enclosed in the time-dependent mode functions, satisfying the boundary conditions at the plate surface, at any given time. Using time-dependent perturbation theory, we evaluate the transition rate to the ground-state of the atom, and show that it depends on the time-dependent atom-plate distance. We also show that the presence of the oscillating mirror significantly affects the physical features of the spontaneous emission of the atom, in particular the spectrum of the emitted radiation. Specifically, we find the appearance of two symmetric lateral peaks in the spectrum, not present in the case of a static mirror, due to the modulated environment. The two lateral peaks are separated from the central peak by the modulation frequency, and we discuss the possibility to observe them with actual experimental techniques of dynamical mirrors and atomic trapping. Our results indicate that a dynamical (i.e., time-modulated) environment can give new possibilities to control and manipulate also other radiative processes of two or more atoms or molecules nearby, for example their cooperative decay or the resonant energy transfer

    Public-cooperative policy mechanisms for housing commons

    Cooperative housing is experiencing a resurgence of interest worldwide. As a more democratic and affordable alternative to dominant housing provision, it is often heralded as a blueprint for ‘housing commons’. Despite its long history, however, cooperative housing has rarely gone beyond a ‘niche’ in the housing market. Recent critical housing scholarship is beginning to address this marginalisation and understand how a more widespread development of the sector can be supported. In times and places where cooperative housing has expanded beyond a ‘niche’ solution, the role of the state, through policy making at national, regional and municipal scale, stands out as an important enabling factor. Drawing on ten international cases, this study presents a framework for a rigorous and politically meaningful comparative approach to public-cooperative policy mechanisms for ‘housing commons’. Three key phases in the housing process (production, access and management, and maintenance of the model in time) are identified and discussed through concrete examples of policy areas and mechanisms. The article contributes to scholarship on cooperative housing policy making and ‘housing commons’ and argues for a shift in attention to questions of accessibility over time, and the thorny issue of permanent decommodification

    A new fungal isolates applicated to bovine skin in beamhouse processes

    Content: Beamhouse area is an important step in leather technology, either in the final quality of the leather or in the contribution to the contamination of effluents. In unhairing process, the use of enzymes as sulphide assistants can reduce sulfhidric gas emissions to reach permitted levels for health. The characterization of enzymatic extracts allows controlling the proteolysis mechanism so that its action does not attack the reticular structure. A new fungal enzyme extracts were applied on submerged bovine skin in the soaking and unhairing steps. Fungal strains were isolated from alkaline soils of coast of Buenos Aires province and enzymatic extracts (EE) were obtained by submerged culture with bovine hair waste from hair-saving unhairing process as inducer in the production of keratinolytic enzymes. This activity was determined by quantitative test and the most productive strains were selected: Clonostachys rosea (CR), Emericellopsis minima (EM), Paecilomyces lilacinus (PL), Penicillium sp (Psp), Fusarium oxysporum (FO), Acremonium sp (A) and an unidentified filamentous fungus strain with sterile yellow mycelium (SYM). EE were tested at laboratory scale on submerged bovine skin with biocide 0,2% w/w wet skin, anionic 0,1% and non-ionic 0,5% tensioactives in soaking and unhairing respectively and incubated 48 h at 37°C in shaking thermostatic bath. Controls were tested in the same conditions without EE. Morphological changes in the skin were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pieces of bovine skin were fixed, post-fixed in formaldehyde 4% and dehydrated in alcohol solutions, treated by critical point drying, metalized and analyzed in SEM. It was observed with FO, EM and A extracts empty hair follicles, absence of epidermis, papillary layer of dermis exposed, hairs enclosed by detached hair follicle sheaths and collagen fibers without characteristic patterns. With PL and SYM EE some hairs were detached while Psp and CR EE did not produce changes. In control samples epidermis and hair without modification were observed. In the quantitative test, keratinolytic activities increased in the following order: A<PL<Psp<CR<FO<SYM. Submerged culture with keratin as inductor produced keratinolytic enzymes useful for unhairing step. Fusarium oxysporum extract showed the greatest effect on the skin, thus the relationship between keratinolytic activity and depilatory effect was found. However, it is necessary to find the optimal conditions to avoid the damage of collagen and enable its application as a sustainable technology.     Este proyecto analiza en las obras de Copi y de Alberto Kurapel la tensión que produjo la experiencia del exilio en el vínculo lengua-territorio, lengua-literatura. Se trata de una problemática que necesita exceder lo análitico textual, para poder expandirse y aplicarse dentro de una dimensión práctica, en donde lo teórico devenga tangible y visible. Es por ello que se analizará, por un lado, la problemática sobre las causas de por qué las obras de Alberto Kurapel y de Copi (literatura de exilio) no integran los corpus que constituyen la Literatura de Habla Francesa, ya que, ambos escogieron la lengua francesa para producir. Por otro lado, serán tema de investigación los efectos que han producido aquellas omisiones en la configuración identitaria subjetiva individual y colectiva -respecto del campo literario- tanto de los países y lenguas de partida, como de los de llegada.     Progettare una Città Queer

    Le città sono organismi complessi nei quali, specialmente negli ultimi anni, è aumentata l’attenzione alle relazioni sociali, e alle presenze umane e non umane che abitano lo spazio pubblico, in una dimensione di prossimità, in cui flussi, interazioni e relazioni assumono sempre più valore e necessitano di maggiore cura. Lo spazio pubblico è spazio collettivo e condiviso, luogo in cui avviene (o dovrebbe avvenire) l’interazione sociale, la costruzione della comunità e la pratica della democrazia. In questa prospettiva, lo spazio urbano deve essere accogliente e farsi carico della pluralità delle diverse individualità, facilitando la coesione sociale tra i suoi abitanti grazie al suo essere accessibile, inclusivo, sicuro e fluido. Gli spazi pubblici sono stati storicamente progettati per sostenere i ruoli di genere tradizionali, basati sull'esperienza maschile considerata erroneamente neutra. Per questo motivo è importante capire come le persone e i loro corpi vivono e abitano gli spazi pubblici urbani. Storicamente, lo spazio queer e il senso di appartenenza e sicurezza ad esso associati non sono legati esclusivamente alla fisicità dello spazio in sé, molti altri fattori entrano in gioco. Quali sono questi fattori? Come si può definire e progettare uno spazio queer? Non si tratta di progettare PER le persone queer, ma progettare CON le persone queer, in modo queer, adottando un approccio dal basso verso l'alto, coinvolgendo direttamente gli attori locali delle diverse comunità e soggettività queer che abitano lo spazio pubblico. In questo contesto si inserisce il corso Temporary and Inclusive Urban Solutions della Scuola del Design del Politecnico di Milano tenutosi tra maggio e giugno 2023. Il corso si è focalizzato sulla progettazione di soluzioni temporanee per la città inclusiva, in stretto contatto con le realtà locali, esplorando il rapporto tra il concetto stesso di queerness e lo spazio pubblico, con l’obiettivo di definire, attraverso la progettazione partecipata, come la città di Milano possa essere più queer, inclusiva, accessibile, ospitale e attraente. Nove gruppi di studenti e studentesse hanno lavorato in alcuni spazi dei nove Municipi della città di Milano coinvolgendo diversi stakeholder in sessioni di co-design e workshop al fine di progettare insieme ai possibili utenti delle installazioni urbane temporanee. I partner del corso sono stati i 9 Municipi del Comune di Milano e varie associazioni LGBTQ+ operanti sul territorio Milanese, come CIG Arcigay, PoliEdro, Agedo, Famiglie Arcobaleno, GayMinOut, ALA Milano e Pride Sport Milano. Le soluzioni urbane temporanee progettate dagli studenti e dalle studentesse hanno prodotto nove scenari per la città di oggi e del futuro, in cui lo spazio pubblico si trasforma in spazio di incubazione di pratiche sociali, in cui le comunità creative agiscono per creare nuove soluzioni a problemi quotidiani che la società non sempre è in grado di risolvere, indagando le opportunità per migliorare il senso di appartenenza ai quartieri e alla città

    Stepwise shortening of agalsidase beta infusion duration in Fabry disease: Clinical experience with infusion rate escalation protocol

    Background: Although enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase beta resulted in a variety of clinical benefits, life-long biweekly intravenous infusion may impact on patients’ quality of life. Moreover, regular infusions are time-consuming: although a stepwise shortening of infusion duration is allowed up to a minimum of 1.5 hr, in most centers it remains ≥3 hr, and no data exists about the safety and tolerability of agalsidase beta administration at maximum tolerated infusion rate. Methods: In this study, we reported our experience with a stepwise infusion rate escalation protocol developed in our center in a cohort of 53 Fabry patients (both already receiving and treatment-naΪve), and explored factors predictive for the infusion rate increase tolerability. Results: Fifty-two patients (98%) reduced infusion duration ≤3 hr; of these, 38 (72%) even reached a duration ≤2 hr. We found a significant difference between the mean duration reached by already treated and naΪve patients (p <.01). More severely affected patients (male patients and those with lower enzyme activity) received longer infusions for higher risk of infusion-associated reactions (IARs). A significant correlation between anti-agalsidase antibodies and IARs was found. Conclusion: Our infusion rate escalation protocol is safe and could improve patient compliance, satisfaction and quality of life
