Architecture to Support Quality of Service in Arrowhead Systems
Presented at INForum - Simpósio de Informática (INFORUM 2015). 7 to 8, Sep, 2015. Covilhã, Portugal.The Arrowhead project [1] considers to normalize all interactions involving embedded
systems by mediating them through services. The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
paradigm is applied to both the interactions that provide the service requested by the
user, and other support actions such as the authentication and registration of the devices,
and the services they provide, the look-up of devices and service provided, and orchestration
of services for creation of more complex services. To this purpose, services are
divided into Core Services, which are present in every environment supporting Arrowhead
applications, and user services that implement the applications. The Core Services
set comprises, at least, Authentication Service, Registration Service and Orchestration

The Industrial Internet of Things

Lisboa.The application of the Internet of Things to manufacturing is the driving force of the new industrial revolution (Industrie 4.0). In fact, most activities in the manufacturing industry can benefit from the data collected in the context of the industrial process. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), whose pillars are the usage of IP communication between the devices and making the devices accessible through the Internet, can maximize the benefits of the information by the integration between multiple data sources, and by the ubiquitous fruition of the information itself. It is common belief that IIoT will transform companies and countries, opening up a new era of economic growth and competitiveness, since it has great potential for improving quality control, sustainable and green practices, supply chain traceability, and maintenance of the user in the loop. Anyway, a number of challenges arise in this context, related for example to adaptability and scalability, real-time communication and QoS, and system deployment and management. A communication middleware can support the IIoT vision by coping with these issues. An IoT Cloud and Big Data Architecture for the Maintenance of Home Appliances
Billions of interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices
collect tremendous amounts of data from real-world scenarios. Big data is
generating increasing interest in a wide range of industries. Once data is
analyzed through compute-intensive Machine Learning (ML) methods, it can derive
critical business value for organizations. Powerfulplatforms are essential to
handle and process such massive collections of information cost-effectively and
conveniently. This work introduces a distributed and scalable platform
architecture that can be deployed for efficient real-world big data collection
and analytics. The proposed system was tested with a case study for Predictive
Maintenance of Home Appliances, where current and vibration sensors with high
acquisition frequency were connected to washing machines and refrigerators. The
introduced platform was used to collect, store, and analyze the data. The
experimental results demonstrated that the presented system could be
advantageous for tackling real-world IoT scenarios in a cost-effective and

This communication describes research and development directions
that are being explored for the creation of a maintenance system for home appliances. The solution will enable a faster and more accurate automation of after-sale services for home appliances. It will be based on three tiers: data acquisition, data analysis and business tiers. The communication provides a context
for the work, both regarding the application area in general and the three tiers,

Unstable Angina: Risk Stratification for Significant Coronary Artery Disease in The Era of High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin
Introduction: High-sensitivity troponin (hsTn) has a very high diagnostic accuracy for myocardial infarction (MI), and patients who were formerly diagnosed with unstable angina (UA) are being reclassified as having NSTEMI in the era of hsTn. This paradigm shift has changed the clinical features of UA, which remain poorly characterized, specifically the occurrence of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) and the need for myocardial revascularization. The main purpose of this study was to clinically characterize contemporary UA patients, assess predictors of obstructive CAD, and develop a risk model to predict significant CAD in this population. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 742 patients admitted to the hospital with UA. All patients underwent coronary angiography. The endpoint of the study was the presence of obstructive CAD on angiography. The cohort was divided into two groups: patients with significant coronary artery disease (CAD+) and those without CAD (CAD–). We developed a score (UA CAD Risk) based on the multivariate model and compared it with the GRACE, ESC, and TIMI risk scores using ROC analysis. Results: Obstructive CAD was observed on angiography in 53% of the patients. Age, dyslipidemia, troponin level, male sex, ST-segment depression, and wall motion abnormalities on echocardiography were independent predictors of obstructive CAD. hsTn levels (undetectable vs. nonsignificant detection) had a negative predictive value of 81% to exclude obstructive CAD. We developed a prediction model with obstructive CAD as the outcome (AUC: 0.60). Conclusions: In a contemporary UA cohort, approximately 50% of the patients did not have obstructive CAD on angiography. Commonly available cardiac tests at hospital admission show limited discrimination power in identifying patients at risk of obstructive CAD. A revised diagnostic and etiology algorithm for patients with UA is warranted
Quality of Service on the Arrowhead Framework

for communication in industrial environments. The Arrowhead
Framework was created to support local cloud functionalities
for automation applications by means of a Service Oriented
Architecture. To this aim, the framework offers a number of
services that ease application development, among them the
QoSSetup and the Monitor services, the first used to verify and
configure QoS in the local cloud, and the second for online
monitoring of QoS. This paper describes how the QoSSetup
and Monitor services are provided in a Arrowhead-compliant
System of Systems, detailing both the principles and algorithms
employed, and how the services are implemented. Experimental
results are provided, from a demonstrator built over a real-time

A Pilot for Proactive Maintenance in Industry 4.0

depends on their timely maintenance. The integration of Cyber
Physical Systems within the maintenance process enables both
continuous machine monitoring and the application of advanced
techniques for predictive and proactive machine maintenance.
The building blocks for this revolution – embedded sensors,
efficient preprocessing capabilities, ubiquitous connection to the
internet, cloud-based analysis of the data, prediction algorithms,
and advanced visualization methods – are already in place, but
several hurdles have to be overcome to enable their application in
real scenarios, namely: the integration with existing machines and
existing maintenance processes. Current research and
development efforts are building pilots and prototypes to
demonstrate the feasibility and the merits of advanced
maintenance techniques, and this paper describes a system for the
