Exponential behavior of the interlayer exchange coupling across non-magnetic metallic superlattices
It is shown that the coupling between magnetic layers separated by
non-magnetic metallic superlattices can decay exponentially as a function of
the spacer thickness , as opposed to the usual decay. This effect
is due to the lack of constructive contributions to the coupling from extended
states across the spacer. The exponential behavior is obtained by properly
choosing the distinct metals and the superlattice unit cell composition.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Two-component mixture of charged particles confined in a channel: melting
The melting of a binary system of charged particles confined in a {\it
quasi}-one-dimensional parabolic channel is studied through Monte Carlo
simulations. At zero temperature the particles are ordered in parallel chains.
The melting is anisotropic and different melting temperatures are obtained
according to the spatial direction, and the different types of particles
present in the system. Melting is very different for the single-, two- and
four-chain configurations. A temperature induced structural phase transition is
found between two different four chain ordered states which is absent in the
mono-disperse system. In the mixed regime, where the two types of particles are
only slightly different, melting is almost isotropic and a thermally induced
homogeneous distribution of the distinct types of charges is observed.Comment: To appear in Journal of Physics: condensed matter ; (13 pages, 12

Impurity segregation in graphene nanoribbons
The electronic properties of low-dimensional materials can be engineered by
doping, but in the case of graphene nanoribbons (GNR) the proximity of two
symmetry-breaking edges introduces an additional dependence on the location of
an impurity across the width of the ribbon. This introduces energetically
favorable locations for impurities, leading to a degree of spatial segregation
in the impurity concentration. We develop a simple model to calculate the
change in energy of a GNR system with an arbitrary impurity as that impurity is
moved across the ribbon and validate its findings by comparison with ab initio
calculations. Although our results agree with previous works predicting the
dominance of edge disorder in GNR, we argue that the distribution of adsorbed
impurities across a ribbon may be controllable by external factors, namely an
applied electric field. We propose that this control over impurity segregation
may allow manipulation and fine-tuning of the magnetic and transport properties
of GNRs.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitte
Mass-degenerate Higgs bosons at 125 GeV in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model
The analysis of the Higgs boson data by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations
appears to exhibit an excess of h --> gamma\gamma events above the Standard
Model (SM) expectations; whereas no significant excess is observed in h --> ZZ*
--> {four lepton} events, albeit with large statistical uncertainty due to the
small data sample. These results (assuming they persist with further data)
could be explained by a pair of nearly mass-degenerate scalars, one of which is
a SM-like Higgs boson and the other is a scalar with suppressed couplings to
W+W- and ZZ. In the two Higgs doublet model, the observed \gamma\gamma and ZZ*
--> {four lepton} data can be reproduced by an approximately degenerate CP-even
(h) and CP-odd (A) Higgs boson for values of \sin(\beta-\alpha) near unity and
0.7 < \tan\beta < 1. An enhanced \gamma\gamma signal can also arise in cases
where m_h ~ m_H, m_H ~ m_A, or m_h ~ m_H ~ m_A. Since the ZZ* --> {four lepton}
signal derives primarily from a SM-like Higgs boson whereas the \gamma\gamma
signal receives contributions from two (or more) nearly mass-degenerate states,
one would expect a slightly different invariant mass peak in the ZZ* --> {four
lepton} and \gamma\gamma channels. The phenomenological consequences of such
models can be tested with additional Higgs data that will be collected at the
LHC in the near future.Comment: 18 pages, 19 pdf figures, v2: references added, v3&v4: added refs and

Symmetries of the 2HDM: an invariant formulation and consequences
Symmetries of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) potential that can be
extended to the whole Lagrangian, i.e. the CP-symmetries CP1, CP2, CP3 and the
Higgs-family symmetries Z2, U(1) and SO(3) are discussed. Sufficient and
necessary conditions in terms of constraints on masses and physical couplings
for the potential to respect each of these symmetries are found. Each symmetry
can be realized through several alternative cases, each case being a set of
relations among physical parameters. We will show that some of those relations
are invariant under the renormalization group, but others are not. The cases
corresponding to each symmetry group are illustrated by analyzing the interplay
between the potential and the vacuum expectation values.Comment: 58 pages, 7 figures. JHEP version. References added, clarifications

Lorentz-breaking effects in scalar-tensor theories of gravity
In this work, we study the effects of breaking Lorentz symmetry in
scalar-tensor theories of gravity taking torsion into account. We show that a
space-time with torsion interacting with a Maxwell field by means of a
Chern-Simons-like term is able to explain the optical activity in syncrotron
radiation emitted by cosmological distant radio sources. Without specifying the
source of the dilaton-gravity, we study the dilaton-solution. We analyse the
physical implications of this result in the Jordan-Fierz frame. We also analyse
the effects of the Lorentz breaking in the cosmic string formation process. We
obtain the solution corresponding to a cosmic string in the presence of torsion
by keeping track of the effects of the Chern-Simons coupling and calculate the
charge induced on this cosmic string in this framework. We also show that the
resulting charged cosmic string gives us important effects concerning the
background radiation. The optical activity in this case is also worked out and
discussed.Comment: 10 pages, no figures, ReVTex forma
