    Stability of 2-D characteristic polynomials

    This paper derives some new conditions for the bivariate characteristic polynomial of an uncertain matrix to be very strict Hurwitz. The uncertainties are assumed of the structured and unstructured type. By using the two-dimensional (2-D) inverse Laplace transform, the bounds on the uncertainties are derived which will ensure that the bivariate characteristic polynomial to be very strict Hurwitz. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the results.<br /

    Numerical implementation of a functional observability algorithm : a singular value decomposition approach

    The paper outlines a numerical algorithm to implement the concept of Functional Observability introduced in [6] based on a Singular Value Decomposition approach. The key feature of this algorithm is in outputting a minimum number of additional linear functions of the state vector when the system is Functional Observable, these additional functions are required to design the smallest possible order functional observer as stated in [6]

    A simple theorem for Functional Observability is presented considering the observable and unobservable states of a system based on Kalman decomposition. The proposed theorem is also consistent with two other theorems on Functional Observability which was based on eigen decomposition [6]. The paper also reports a new definition for Functional Observability which is consistent with previously reported definitions and theorems [4], [5], [6]

    Microprocessor-based insulin delivery device with amperometric glucose sensing

    This paper details the design of a closed-loop insulin delivery device, consisting of a glucose sensing circuit, and a basic microprocessor-based syringe pump. The glucose sensing circuit contains the required components to interface with CGMS\u27s glucose sensor assembly, while the syringe pump design uses microprocessor to allow flexible control over the pump driver. Instrumentation developed in this paper provides a ready reference to other researchers on the construction of a closed-loop insulin delivery apparatus with amperometric glucose sensor.<br /

    Design of linear functional observers for time-delay systems of the neutral-type

    This paper presents the design of reduced-order linear functional observers for a class of linear time-delay systems of the neutral-type. The type of the observer proposed in this paper is without internal delay and its order is the same as the number of linear functions to be estimated. First, conditions for the existence of the reduced-order functional observers that are capable of asymptotically estimating any given function of the state vector are derived. Then, based on the newly derived existence conditions, a procedure is given for the determination of the observer parameters. The results derived in this paper include a range of linear systems and extend some existing results of linear functional observers to linear neutral delay systems. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedure.<br /

    Optimal H∞ insulin injection control for blood glucose regulation in diabetic patients

    The theory of H/sup /spl infin// optimal control has the feature of minimizing the worst-case gain of an unknown disturbance input. When appropriately modified, the theory can be used to design a &quot;switching&quot; controller that can be applied to insulin injection for blood glucose (BG) regulation. The &quot;switching&quot; controller is defined by a collection of basic insulin rates and a rule that switches the insulin rates from one value to another. The rule employed an estimation of BG from noisy measurements, and the subsequent optimization of a performance index that involves the solution of a &quot;jump&quot; Riccati differential equation and a discrete-time dynamic programming equation. With an appropriate patient model, simulation studies have shown that the controller could correct BG deviation using clinically acceptable insulin delivery rates. <br /

    Long photoperiod impairs learning in male but not female medaka

    Day length in conjunction with seasonal cycles affects many aspects of animal biology. We have studied photoperiod-dependent alterations of complex behavior in the teleost, medaka (Oryzias latipes), a photoperiodic breeder, in a learning paradigm whereby fish have to activate a sensor to obtain a food reward.Medaka were tested under a long (14:10 LD) and short (10:14 LD) photoperiod in three different groups:mixed-sex, all-males, and all-females. Under long photoperiod, medaka mixed-sex groups learned rapidly with a stable response. Unexpectedly, males-only groups showed a strong learning deficit, whereas females- only groups performed efficiently. In mixed-sex groups, female individuals drove group learning, whereas males apparently prioritized mating over feeding behavior resulting in strongly reduced learning performance. Under short photoperiod, wheremedaka do notmate,male performance improved to a level similar to that of females. Thus, photoperiod has sex-specific effects on the learning performance of a seasonal vertebrate
