    Metabolic risk score indexes validation in overweight healthy people

    The constellation of adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic risk factors, including elevated abdominal obesity, blood pressure (BP), glucose, and triglycerides (TG) and lowered high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), has been termed the metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) [1]. A number of different definitions have been developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) [2], the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) [3], the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR) [4] and, most recently, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) [5]. Since there is no universal definition of the Metabolic Syndrome, several authors have derived different risk scores to represent the clustering of its components [6-11]

    Phylogeographical spatial diffusion analysis reveals the journey of Geoffroy's cat through the Quaternary glaciations of South America

    Leopardus geoffroyi is a small feline with a widespread distribution in a broad array of habitats. Here we investigate its evolutionary history to characterize the phylogeographical patterns that led to its present distribution using mitochondrial DNA from 72 individuals collected throughout its entire range. All haplotypes conformed to a monophyletic group, including two clades with a central/marginal disposition that is incongruent to the proposed subspecies. Spatial diffusion analysis showed the origin of the species within the oldest and more diverse central clade. A Bayesian Skyline Plot combined with a dispersal through time plot revealed two population increases at 190 000-170 000 and 45 000-35 000 years ago, the latter period accompanied by an increase in the dispersal rate. Species distribution models showed similar patterns between the present and Last Interglacial Period, and a reduction of high-probability areas during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Molecular evidence confirms L. geoffroyi as a monotypic species whose origin is located in Central Argentina. The last glaciation had little effect on the pattern of distribution of the species: the population and range expansion that started before the LGM, although probably being halted, continued after the glaciation and resulted in the presence of this felid in the far south of Patagonia.Fil: Gomez Fernandez, Maria Jimena.     Dissecting the microglial response in transgenic models of amyloidogenesis and tauopathy

    Amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptide deposits and hyperphosphorylated tau protein (phospho-tau) accumulate in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains. These abnormal protein aggregates leads to glial activation, synaptic dysfunction, neuronal loss and cognitive decline. While microglial response has mostly been analyzed in relation to Abeta accumulation, little is still known about inflammatory processes associated with tau pathology. Microglial reactivity and defective glial responses have been involved in these proteinopathies. Our aim is to clarify the effects of Abeta and tau separately, in order to improve the comprehension of their differential contribution to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. We compared the progression of these processes in an amyloidogenic AD model (APPSL/PS1M146L) and two different models of tauopathy (ThyTau22 and hP301S) from 2 to 18 months of age. Accumulation of aggregated proteins was assessed using specific anti- Abeta and phospho-tau antibodies. Inflammatory response was studied using a battery of microglial markers (Iba1, CD45, CD68, Trem2 and Gal-3). In the hippocampus of these models, Tau and Abeta pathologies initiated as early as 2 months of age and increased progressively with aging. Neuritic plaques induced a strong microglial activation associated to plaques in APP/PS1 mice. Interestingly, inflammatory markers and microglial reactivity were barely increased in the hippocampus of ThyTau mice in contrast to not only APP/PS1, but also to P301S mice, which displayed a prominent microglial response. Deciphering the specific effects of Abeta, tau and their different toxic species, would indeed enable the development of novel therapeutic strategies and drugs targeting neuroinflammatory pathways related to these proteinopathies.Universidad de Málaga.     Subclinical Atherosclerosis Burden by 3D Ultrasound in Mid-Life: The PESA Study

    BACKGROUND: Detection of subclinical atherosclerosis improves risk prediction beyond cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and risk scores, but quantification of plaque burden may improve it further. Novel 3-dimensional vascular ultrasound (3DVUS) provides accurate volumetric quantification of plaque burden. OBJECTIVES: The authors evaluated associations between 3DVUS-based plaque burden and CVRFs and explored potential added value over simple plaque detection. METHODS: The authors included 3,860 (92.2%) PESA (Progression of Early Subclinical Atherosclerosis) study participants (age 45.8 ± 4.3 years; 63% men). Bilateral carotid and femoral territories were explored by 3DVUS to determine the number of plaques and territories affected, and to quantify global plaque burden defined as the sum of all plaque volumes. Linear regression and proportional odds models were used to evaluate associations of plaque burden with CVRFs and estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk. RESULTS: Plaque burden was higher in men (63.4 mm3 [interquartile range (IQR): 23.8 to 144.8 mm3] vs. 25.7 mm3 [IQR: 11.5 to 61.6 mm3] in women; p < 0.001), in the femoral territory (64 mm3 [IQR: 27.6 to 140.5 mm3] vs. 23.1 mm3 [IQR: 9.9 to 48.7 mm3] in the carotid territory; p < 0.001), and with increasing age (p < 0.001). Age, sex, smoking, and dyslipidemia were more strongly associated with femoral than with carotid disease burden, whereas hypertension and diabetes showed no territorial differences. Plaque burden was directly associated with estimated cardiovascular risk independently of the number of plaques or territories affected (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: 3DVUS quantifies higher plaque burden in men, in the femoral territory, and with increasing age during midlife. Plaque burden correlates strongly with CVRFs, especially at the femoral level, and reflects estimated cardiovascular risk more closely than plaque detection alone.     Reliability and reproductibility of skin temperature of overweight subjects by an infrared thermograpy software designed for human beings

    The technical improvement and new applications of Infrared Thermography (IRT) with healthy subjects should be accompanied by results about the reproducibility of IRT measurements in different popula-tion groups. In addition, there is a remarkable necessity of a larger supply on software to analyze IRT images of human beings. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: firstly, to investigate the reproducibility of skin temperature (Tsk) on overweight and obese subjects using IRT in different Regions of Interest (ROI), moments and side-to-side differences (?T); and secondly, to check the reliability of a new software called Termotracker®, specialized on the analysis of IRT images of human beings. Methods: 22 overweight and obese males (11) and females (11) (age: 41,51±7,76 years; height: 1,65±0,09 m; weight: 82,41±11,81 Kg; BMI: 30,17±2,58 kg/m²) were assessed in two consecutive thermograms (5 seconds in-between) by the same observer, using an infrared camera (FLIR T335, Sweden) to get 4 IRT images from the whole body. 11 ROI were selected using Termotracker® to analyze its reproducibility and reliability through Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Coefficient of Variation (CV) values. Results: The reproducibility of the side-to-side differences (?T) between two consecutive thermograms was very high in all ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,989), and excellent between two computers (Mean ICC = 0,998). The re-liability of the software was very high in all the ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,999). Intraexaminer reliability analysing the same subjects in two consecutive thermograms was also very high (Mean ICC = 0,997). CV values of the different ROIs were around 2%. Conclusions: Skin temperature on overweight subjects had an excellent reproducibility for consecutive ther-mograms. The reproducibility of thermal asymmetries (?T) was also good but it had the influence of several factors that should be further investigated. Termotracker® reached excellent reliability results and it is a relia-ble and objective software to analyse IRT images of humans beings

    Unraveling Fano noise and partial charge collection effect in X-ray spectra below 1 keV

    Fano noise, readout noise, and the partial charge collection (PCC) effect collectively contribute to the degradation of energy spectra in Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) measurements, especially at low energies. In this work, the X-ray produced by the fluorescence of fluorine (677 eV) and aluminum (1486 eV) were recorded using a Skipper-CCD, which enabled the reading noise to be reduced to 0.2 e-. Based on an analytical description of photopeak shapes resulting from the convolution of the PCC effect and Fano noise, we achieved a precise characterization of the energy spectra. This description enabled us to disentangle and quantify the contributions from both Fano noise and the PCC effect. As a result, we determined the Fano factor and the electron-hole pair creation energy. Additionally, we estimated the PCC-region of the sensor and, for the first time, experimentally observed the expected skewness of photopeaks at low energies.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    FPGA Implementation for Real-Time Background Subtraction Based on Horprasert Model

    Background subtraction is considered the first processing stage in video surveillance systems, and consists of determining objects in movement in a scene captured by a static camera. It is an intensive task with a high computational cost. This work proposes an embedded novel architecture on FPGA which is able to extract the background on resource-limited environments and offers low degradation (produced because of the hardware-friendly model modification). In addition, the original model is extended in order to detect shadows and improve the quality of the segmentation of the moving objects. We have analyzed the resource consumption and performance in Spartan3 Xilinx FPGAs and compared to others works available on the literature, showing that the current architecture is a good trade-off in terms of accuracy, performance and resources utilization. With less than a 65% of the resources utilization of a XC3SD3400 Spartan-3A low-cost family FPGA, the system achieves a frequency of 66.5 MHz reaching 32.8 fps with resolution 1,024 × 1,024 pixels, and an estimated power consumption of 5.76 W

    Magnetoencephalogram background activity analysis in Alzheimer's disease patients using auto mutual information

    The goal of this study was to analyze the magnetoencephalogram (MEG) background activity in patients,with Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the auto mutual information (AMI). Applied to time series, AMI provides a measure of future points predictability from past points. Five minutes of recording were acquired with a 148-channel wholehead magnetometer (AIIAGNES 2500 NVH, 413 Neuroimaging) in 12 patients with probable AD and 12 elderly control subjects. Artifact-free epochs of 20 seconds (3392 points, sample frequency of 169.6 Hz) were selected for our study. Our results showed that the absolute values of the averaged decline rate of AIM were lower in AD patients than in control subjects for all channels. In addition, there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.01, Student's t-test) in most channels. These preliminary results suggest that neuronal dysfunction in AD is associated with differences in the dynamical processes underlying the MEG recording
