    Plausibility of a Neural Network Classifier-Based Neuroprosthesis for Depression Detection via Laughter Records

    The present work explores the diagnostic performance for depression of neural network classifiers analyzing the sound structures of laughter as registered from clinical patients and healthy controls. The main methodological novelty of this work is that simple sound variables of laughter are used as inputs, instead of electrophysiological signals or local field potentials (LFPs) or spoken language utterances, which are the usual protocols up-to-date. In the present study, involving 934 laughs from 30 patients and 20 controls, four different neural networks models were tested for sensitivity analysis, and were additionally trained for depression detection. Some elementary sound variables were extracted from the records: timing, fundamental frequency mean, first three formants, average power, and the Shannon-Wiener entropy. In the results obtained, two of the neural networks show a diagnostic discrimination capability of 93.02 and 91.15% respectively, while the third and fourth ones have an 87.96 and 82.40% percentage of success. Remarkably, entropy turns out to be a fundamental variable to distinguish between patients and controls, and this is a significant factor which becomes essential to understand the deep neurocognitive relationships between laughter and depression. In biomedical terms, our neural network classifier-based neuroprosthesis opens up the possibility of applying the same methodology to other mental-health and neuropsychiatric pathologies. Indeed, exploring the application of laughter in the early detection and prognosis of Alzheimer and Parkinson would represent an enticing possibility, both from the biomedical and the computational points of view

    The sociotype questionnaire: assessing the social burden of skin diseases

    Skin diseases can cause a significant psychosocial burden. A number of studies have considered issues such as a lower quality of life, increased anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and other psychological disorders. However, adequate means for evaluating social interaction difficulties, diminished social networks, and the impoverished conversational exchanges that affect the wellbeing and mental health of the individual, have not been sufficiently developed. This study is based on the sociotype approach that has recently been proposed as a new theoretical construct implemented in the form of a questionnaire; it examines the social bonding structures and relational factors associated with dermatological conditions..

    Diseño y Evaluación de un Proceso de Formación en Habilidades Comunicativas para la Docencia

    Este trabajo presenta los resultados de un proceso de investigación-acción centrado en el análisis y evaluación del diseño y los resultados de aprendizaje de la asignatura “Habilidades comunicativas para profesores”, que se imparte en el Máster en Profesorado de ESO, Bachillerato, FP y Enseñanzas de Idiomas, Artísticas y Deportivas en la Universidad de Zaragoza. La asignatura pretende capacitar a los futuros profesores para identificar, observar críticamente y poner en práctica habilidades de comunicación oral relacionadas con las principales formas discursivas de la actividad docente (expositivas, argumentativas y dialógicas), partiendo del presupuesto inicial de que determinadas estrategias comunicativas contribuyen a facilitar los aprendizajes. La fundamentación teórica adopta el paradigma de educación como una situación de comunicación entre profesor y alumnos. A partir de ello, se hace especial hincapié en el dominio de los diversos géneros discursivos docentes y las estrategias retóricas a través de diversas prácticas, algunas en el contexto real de los centros de Secundaria. Los resultados de aprendizaje y el grado de satisfacción de los estudiantes han sido objeto de evaluación mediante instrumentos cuantitativos y cualitativos. En conjunto, los resultados permiten afirmar que esta asignatura resulta altamente eficaz y relevante para la formación del profesorado de Secundaria. This paper presents the results of a process of action research focused on analysing and evaluating both the curriculum and the results of "Communicattvle Skills for Future Teachers", an optional course offered within the Teacher''s Training Master of the University of Zaragoza. One of the aims of this course is to train the future teachers in older to identify, recognize and critically valorise oral skills and genres that are used in classrooms in Middle Education. Therefore at the end of the course it is expected for the Students to be able to master the principal genres for teaching (exposition, argumentation, dialogue), inso-far as these communicative strategies can increase the quality of teaching. The theoretical framework of this work is based upon the idea that learning is essentially a communicate situation where teachers and students are involved. So the training is basically focused on mastering oral skills and rhetorical strategies through practical activities, some of them made in real Middle Education classrooms. Considering all that, through different tools, we evaluated the learning results and the satisfaction degree of the students. And, in brief, the results allow us to conclude that this course is highly useful for the training of future teachers

    Treatment with the senolytics dasatinib/quercetin reduces SARS-CoV-2-related mortality in mice

    The enormous societal impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly harsh for some social groups, such as the elderly. Recently, it has been suggested that senescent cells could play a central role in pathogenesis by exacerbating the pro-inflammatory immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, the selective clearance of senescent cells by senolytic drugs may be useful as a therapy to ameliorate the symptoms of COVID-19 in some cases. Using the established COVID-19 murine model K18-hACE2, we demonstrated that a combination of the senolytics dasatinib and quercetin (D/Q) significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2-related mortality, delayed its onset, and reduced the number of other clinical symptoms. The increase in senescent markers that we detected in the lungs in response to SARS-CoV-2 may be related to the post-COVID-19 sequelae described to date. These results place senescent cells as central targets for the treatment of COVID-19, and make D/Q a new and promising therapeutic too

Since the amount of experimental data on which the models are parameterized is often limited, these models exhibit large uncertainty in both parameters and predictions. Statistical methods can be used to select experiments that will reduce such uncertainty in an optimal manner. However, existing methods for optimal experiment design (OED) rely on assumptions that are inappropriate when data are scarce considering model complexity

    Petrophysical characterization of non-magnetic granites; density and magnetic susceptibility relationships

    In this work we establish reliable correlations between density and magnetic susceptibility in three paramagnetic granites from the Pyrenees. In total, 128 sites (310 density measurements and >2600 susceptibility ones) were studied in the Mont Louis-Andorra, Maladeta and Marimanha granitic plutons covering the main range of variability of magnetic susceptibility. Regressions were calculated for every granitic body and an integrated linear function was obtained for the entire dataset: ρ (kg/m3) = 2566 (kg/m3) + 0.541κ (10−6 S.I.) (R:0.97). This relationship is only valid in the paramagnetic domain, where iron is mostly fractioned in iron-bearing phyllosilicates and the occurrence of magnetite is negligible (or at least its contribution to the bulk susceptibility). This relationship, likely different in other bodies, allows for transforming magnetic susceptibility data into density data, helping to constrain gravity modelling when density data from rock samples are scarce. Given the large amount of AMS studies worldwide, together with the quickness and cost-effectiveness of susceptibility measurements with portable devices, this methodology allows for densifying and homogenizing the petrophysical data when modelling granite rock volumes based on both magnetic and gravimetric signals.This work was financed by the projects GeoPiri3D (CGL2017-84901-C2-2-P), UKRIA4D (PID2019-104693GB-I00/CTA) and IMAGYN (PID2020-114273GB-C22) from the Spanish Ministry of Science (funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and “ERDF A way of making Europe”).     Biology of moderately halophilic aerobic bacteria

    The moderately halophilic heterotrophic aerobic bacteria form a diverse group of microorganisms. The property of halophilism is widespread within the bacterial domain. Bacterial halophiles are abundant in environments such as salt lakes, saline soils, and salted food products. Most species keep their intracellular ionic concentrations at low levels while synthesizing or accumulating organic solutes to provide osmotic equilibrium of the cytoplasm with the surrounding medium. Complex mechanisms of adjustment of the intracellular environments and the properties of the cytoplasmic membrane enable rapid adaptation to changes in the salt concentration of the environment. Approaches to the study of genetic processes have recently been developed for several moderate halophiles, opening the way toward an understanding of haloadaptation at the molecular level. The new information obtained is also expected to contribute to the development of novel biotechnological uses for these organisms
