    The Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate

    Get PDF
We study the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field theory as applied to a two-dimensional finite trapped Bose gas at low temperatures and find that, in the Hartree-Fock approximation, the system can be described either with or without the presence of a condensate; this is true in the thermodynamic limit as well. Of the two solutions, the one that includes a condensate has a lower free energy at all temperatures. However, the Hartree-Fock scheme neglects the presence of phonons within the system, and when we allow for the possibility of phonons we are unable to find condensed solutions; the uncondensed solutions, on the other hand, are valid also in the latter, more general scheme. Our results confirm that low-energy phonons destabilize the two-dimensional condensate.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX 4. To appear in J. Low Temp. Phys. In this work, we review and extend some well known results for the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet pp-Laplace operator to a more general class of monotone quasilinear elliptic operators. As an application we obtain some homogenization results for nonlinear eigenvalues.Comment: 23 pages, Rev. UMA, to appea

Universal decoherence induced by an environmental quantum phase transition

    Get PDF
Decoherence induced by coupling a system with an environment may display universal features. Here we demostrate that when the coupling to the system drives a quantum phase transition in the environment, the temporal decay of quantum coherences in the system is Gaussian with a width independent of the system-environment coupling strength. The existence of this effect opens the way for a new type of quantum simulation algorithm, where a single qubit is used to detect a quantum phase transition. We discuss possible implementations of such algorithm and we relate our results to available data on universal decoherence in NMR echo experiments

MEDEA: A DSGE Model for the Spanish Economy

    Get PDF
In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to a new macroeconometric model of the Spanish economy named MEDEA (Modelo de Equilibrio Dinámico de la Economía EspañolA). MEDEA is a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model that aims to describe the main features of the Spanish economy for policy analysis, counterfactual exercises, and forecasting. MEDEA is built in the tradition of New Keynesian models with real and nominal rigidities, but it also incorporates aspects such as a small open economy framework, an outside monetary authority such as the ECB, and population growth, factors that are important in accounting for aggregate fluctuations in Spain. The model is estimated with Bayesian techniques and data from the last two decades. Beyond describing the properties of the model, we perform different exercises to illustrate the potential of MEDEA, including historical decompositions, long-run and short-run simulations, and counterfactual experiments.DSGE Models, Likelihood Estimation, Bayesian Methods

Fiscal volatility shocks and economic activity

The authors study the effects of changes in uncertainty about future fiscal policy on aggregate economic activity. Fiscal deficits and public debt have risen sharply in the wake of the financial crisis. While these developments make fiscal consolidation inevitable, there is considerable uncertainty about the policy mix and timing of such budgetary adjustment. To evaluate the consequences of this increased uncertainty, the authors first estimate tax and spending processes for the U.S. that allow for time-varying volatility. They then feed these processes into an otherwise standard New Keynesian business cycle model calibrated to the U.S. economy. The authors find that fiscal volatility shocks have an adverse effect on economic activity that is comparable to the effects of a 25-basis-point innovation in the federal funds rate.Monetary policy ; Fiscal policy ; Uncertainty

Ever since the stove was invented in the 19th century by James Sharp in England, there has always been a need to provide a continuous supply of fuel to keep it in use. Families in the best of scenarios can procure 02 gas cylinders, to guarantee the uninterrupted operation of their kitchen service; however, in most cases, families only have the option that it is finished and must be replaced, subject to the availability of time and stock of the distributor. On the other hand, it is known that gas balloons represent a danger, due to the possible leaks that usually occur due to carelessness or poor maintenance installations, which can represent deaths from suffocation, poisoning from inhaling monoxide carbon, fires and explosions. Given the aforementioned problem, uninterrupted supply and danger of gas leaks, a solution has been conceptualized. The proposed device comprises sensors that are attached to the kitchen regulator, providing the level of the gas balloon and possible leaks, this information travels to the microcontroller for data processing and then it will be sent to servers in the cloud, this in order to be able to generate trend lines over time that allow predicting user consumption. The topics used to develop the project were: •Project Management taking into account restrictions in scope, time and budget. • Information Management in order to design and manage the database. •Systems Analysis and Design in order to get detailed conceptualization of the solution. •Development and deployment of systems in order to understand the different modules should be develop and how to deploy them. •Secure computing in order to develop security techniques and communication protocols. As a result of the tests, the proposed hardware and software were validated as well as opportunities were also evidenced due to the diversity of sensors and applications

Civil aspects of the judicial sale of real unmovable property in Italy and Spain

The PhD thesis seeks the study of the civil aspects of the judicial sale from a comparative point of view between Italy and Spain. It is a subject which hasn't been deeply analyzed by the recent Italian and Spanish doctrine, and which is characterized by a considerable technical complexity due to its interdisciplinary nature (mainly, procedural and civil). It is also a current issue in this period of economic crisis in which foreclosure processes are a day by day reality of our Courts. The fact of being an institution framed in the foreclosure process outlines its procedural nature, but that cannot hide the fact of producing important civil effects of great importance which are precisely the aim of the PhD thesis
