Discrete Dynamical Systems: A Brief Survey
Dynamical system is a mathematical formalization for any fixed rule that is described in time dependent fashion. The time can be measured by either of the number systems - integers, real numbers, complex numbers. A discrete dynamical system is a dynamical system whose state evolves over a state space in discrete time steps according to a fixed rule. This brief survey paper is concerned with the part of the work done by José Sousa Ramos [2] and some of his research students. We present the general theory of discrete dynamical systems and present results from applications to geometry, graph theory and synchronization

Enterprise information portals: potential for evaluating research for knowledge management and human capital assets using social network analysis
Paper presented at the ECKM 2010 – 11th European Conference on Knowledge Management, 2-3 September, 2010, Famalicão, Portugal. URL: http://www.academic-conferences.org/eckm/eckm2010/eckm10-home.htmEnterprise Information Portals (EIP) are being increasingly referred in the literature as one
interesting technological solution to support organizations in their knowledge management initiatives.
This paper seeks to explore the hidden potential of enterprise information portals to support
knowledge management initiatives through the usage of social network analysis on research results
and co-authorship/co-work relationships that may suggest ways to more effectively utilize knowledge
capital and other organizational resources. For that purpose in this paper we will present field research
results on evaluating knowledge management and human capital assets based on EIP data
repositories using social network analysis. This evaluation will be made through the use of social
network analysis techniques applied to authorship data from papers published in international journals
with refereeing covering the last twenty years of research activities from a Portuguese leading
research institution in the field of telecommunications - Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT)
Marketing accountability and marketing automation: evidence from Portugal
Purpose: The present study seeks to outline the role of marketing automation (MA) in measuring the return on marketing activities and the challenges associated with reaching accountability in marketing. Design/methodology/approach: To investigate the objective of the study, the authors adopted a qualitative approach, conducting an exploratory study among ten key informants located in Portugal. Findings: Based on the results of the qualitative analysis, a conceptual framework is proposed, which includes both strategic- and operational-level factors with the goal of creating a value-based agenda. In this agenda, executives such as the Chief Marketing Officer emerge as value creators, fostering business scalability, and further arguments are provided to justify budget allocation to MA activities. Originality/value: Through careful research of the elements that characterize the phenomenon under study, the present paper ultimately contributes to a better understanding of MA and accountability within the current business paradigm
Abstract: Building a new perspective to the rural northeastern semiarid should be supported by approaches with a multidisciplinary focus, that has the context as a reference and promotes rupture with the conventional pattern of agricultural modernization. This study aimed to demonstrate methodological contributions of approach in rural areas, with the aim of constructing elements of resistance to the traditional model through social mediation for the redesign of agroecosystems. The methodology was guided by the theoretical approach of the Oriented Perspective by Actors. The research was conducted in the community Sítio Areias, Sobral, CE, where was conducted the redesign of one agroecosystem. Using the methodology enabled the interface between knowledges, with the emergence of new practices, with family farmers exerting their agency conditions on the use of new domains for the novelty production relative the construction of sustainable agriculture in semiarid. These social innovations may constitute basic elements for a new process of sustainable rural development and solidarity, with new forms of innovation in rural areas
Review of a disruptive vision of future power grids: a new path based on hybrid AC/DC grids and solid-state transformers
Power grids are evolving with the aim to guarantee sustainability and higher levels of power quality for universal access to electricity. More specifically, over the last two decades, power grids have been targeted for significant changes, including migration from centralized to decentralized paradigms as a corollary of intensive integration of novel electrical technologies and the availability of derived equipment. This paper addresses a review of a disruptive vision of future power grids, mainly focusing on the use of hybrid AC/DC grids and solid-state transformers technologies. Regarding hybrid AC/DC grids in particular, they are analyzed in detail in the context of unipolar and bipolar DC grids (i.e., two-wire or three-wire DC grids), as well as the different structures concerning coupled and decoupled AC configurations with low-frequency or high-frequency isolation. The contextualization of the possible configurations of solid-state transformers and the different configurations of hybrid transformers (in the perspective of offering benefits for increasing power quality in terms of currents or voltages) is also analyzed within the perspective of the smart transformers. Additionally, the paper also presents unified multi-port systems used to interface various technologies with hybrid AC/DC grids, which are also foreseen to play an important role in future power grids (e.g., the unified interface of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems), including an analysis concerning unified multi-port systems for AC or DC grids. Throughout the paper, these topics are presented and discussed in the context of future power grids. An exhaustive description of these technologies is made, covering the most relevant and recent structures and features that can be developed, as well as the challenges for the future power grids. Several scenarios are presented, encompassing the mentioned technologies, and unveiling a progressive evolution that culminates in the cooperative scope of such technologies for a disruptive vision of future power grids. This work has been supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within

Observation of an orbital interaction-induced Feshbach resonance in 173-Yb
We report on the experimental observation of a novel inter-orbital Feshbach
resonance in ultracold 173-Yb atoms, which opens the possibility of tuning the
interactions between the 1S0 and 3P0 metastable state, both possessing
vanishing total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at
experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for
all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via
inter-orbital cross-thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice
using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
