Metabolic Dysfunction in Obstrutive Sleep Apnea: is there a Role for the Liver?

The link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and metabolic disorders is unquestio-nable. Despite different mechanisms have been proposed to explain this relationship, namely the sympathetic nervous system overactivation, alterations in adipokine levels, oxidative stress in white adipose tissue, none is consensual and do not completely clarify this relationship. The liver is a major organ in the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis and whose dysfunction is involved in several diseases, including metabolic diseases. Hence, we hypothesize that liver dysfunction is key in the development of metabolic dysfunction commonly associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Moreover, we aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms of this association within the liver. Male Wistar Rats were divided into two groups: a control and an obese group fed with 60% lipid-enriched diet (HF diet) for 12 weeks. Half of the animals from each group were sub-mitted to a severe chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) paradigm (40s, 5%O2/80s air, 8h/day), that mimics OSA, in the last 14 days. Liver samples were then collected and used for the eval-uation of different parameters: lipid deposition, insulin signalling, glucose homeostasis, hy-poxia, oxidative stress, antioxidant defenses, mitochondrial biogenesis and inflammation, using western blot, histological and fluorescent immunohistochemistry, HPLC and enzymatic assays. Both CIH and HF diet led to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance, effects not aggra-vated in animals submitted to HF plus CIH. CIH aggravates hepatic lipid deposition in obese animals. Hypoxia-inducible factors levels were altered by these stimuli. CIH decreased the oxi-dative phosphorylation complexes in both groups and the levels of superoxide dismutase 1. HF diet reduced mitochondrial density and hepatic antioxidant capacity. CIH and HF diet pro-duced alterations in cysteine-related thiols and pro-inflammatory markers. The results obtained suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, leading to inflammation, may be significant factors contributing to the development of dysmetabolism associated with OSA.A relação entre a apneia obstrutiva do sono (SAOS) e as doenças metabólicas é inequí-voca. Foram propostos diferentes mecanismos para explicar esta relação, nomeadamente so-breativação do sistema nervoso simpático, alterações nos níveis de adipocitocinas ou stress oxidativo no tecido adiposo, contudo nenhum é consensual ou esclarece completamente esta relação. O fígado é crucial na manutenção da homeostase metabólica e cuja disfunção está associada às doenças metabólicas. Assim, pressupomos que a disfunção hepática é fundamen-tal no desenvolvimento do dismetabolismo associado à SAOS, tendo também como objetivo explorar os mecanismos subjacentes a esta associação. Foram usados dois grupos de ratos divididos em grupo controlo e grupo submetido a uma dieta rica em lípidos (HF, 60% lípidos) durante 12 semanas. Metade dos animais de cada grupo foram submetidos a um paradigma de hipóxia crónica intermitente severo (HCI) (40s, 5%O2/80s ar, 8h/dia), que mimetiza a SAOS, nos últimos 14 dias. Foram recolhidas amostras de fígado para avaliação de diferentes parâmetros: esteatose hepática, sinalização da insulina, homeostase de glucose, hipóxia, stress oxidativo, defesas antioxidantes, biogénese mitocon-drial e inflamação, através de western blot, imunohistoquímica histológica e fluorescente, HPLC e ensaios enzimáticos. A HCI e a dieta HF provocaram insulino-resistência e intolerância à glucose, efeitos não agravados no modelo hipercalórica. A HCI agravou a esteatose hepática observada em animais obesos. Os níveis de fatores induzíveis por hipóxia foram alterados por estes estímulos. A HCI diminuiu os níveis dos complexos de fosforilação oxidativa e de superóxido dismutase 1 nos dois grupos. A dieta HF reduziu a densidade mitocondrial e a capacidade antioxidante hepá-tica. Ambos os estímulos produziram alterações nos níveis de tióis e aumentaram os níveis de marcadores pró-inflamatórios. Estes resultados sugerem que a disfunção mitocondrial e o stress oxidativo, que aumen-tam a inflamação, podem ser fatores significativos que contribuem para o desenvolvimento do dismetabolismo associado à SAOS

Livros raros em bibliotecas digitais: preservação e acesso

O trabalho analisa o uso das bibliotecas digitais na preservação de livros raros e em seu acesso a esses livros, caracterizando a noção de livro raro na Biblioteconomia ao mesmo tempo em que diferencia as noções de biblioteca eletrônica, virtual, digital e o processo de automação de bibliotecas. A partir destas distinções e da relação entre as práticas de conservação e restauro aplicadas aos livros raros e a preservação de documentos digitais, investiga as possibilidades de preservação e acesso propiciadas pelas bibliotecas digitais aos livros raros, tendo o levantamento e revisão bibliográficos como métodos adotados para a pesquisa

Assessing knowledge: psychometric properties of the BAMS semantic memory battery

Background: Semantic memory is a cultural influenced cognitive domain that is responsible for our knowledge about words and the world. Semantic Memory Battery (BAMS) is a new battery that evaluate semantic memory based on a compendium of tasks, including verbal fluency, naming, conceptualization, categorization, general questions, and word definitions, and was designed to consider cultural aspects. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the BAMS psychometrics structure comprising classical and modern analysis, and also evaluate a clinical subdivision of the battery. Methods: 114 Brazilian cognitively healthy older adults BAMS performance provided data for psychometric analysis using validity tests, item response theory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis for goodness-of-fit measures. Results: BAMS results revealed good validity and good-fit measures in each subtest, total score (X2 = 20.684, p = 0.110) and a hierarchical structure with clinical subdivision of the battery (X2 = 20.089, p = 0.093). Discussion: BAMS is a new compendium of tasks that evaluate distinct aspects of semantic memory and can clinically consider the impact of executive function. This battery evaluates verbal fluency, naming, conceptualization, categorization, general knowledge and word definitions. The BAMS has clinical importance once semantic memory is mostly influenced by culture and language, and there is an absence of broadly semantic memory tests in our scenario, especially with older adults that can have a pathological aging condition that affects primarily or secondarily this domain

The interactions between the construction and the interpretation of statistical graphs in modelling projects with the use of Information and Communication Technologies

Este artigo apresenta um recorte de uma tese de doutorado que analisa a leitura, construção e interpretação de gráficos estatísticos em projetos de modelagem com uso das tecnologias de informação e comunicação. Mais especificamente, analisamos as interações entre construção e interpretação de gráficos estatísticos. A pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, ocorreu em um colégio de ensino médio e profissional da Bahia e se justifica pelas lacunas de pesquisas sobre gráficos estatísticos. Os dados foram coletados através de observações, documentos e entrevistas dos grupos de alunos dos cursos técnicos de Agroindústria e Enfermagem. A análise de dados aponta que alguns gráficos precisaram ser reconstruídos devido à interpretação inicial realizada, em que foram identificados equívocos e/ou dificuldades. Isso gerou um processo que denominamos de interação entre construção e interpretação de gráficos. Portanto, identificamos que foram compostos coletivos de humanos, oralidade, escrita e informática que produziram conhecimentos matemáticos, tecnológicos e reflexivos coletivos ou coflexivos.This article presents a part of a thesis that analyzes the reading, construction and interpretation of statistical graphs in modelling projects with the use of information and communication technologies. Being more specific, we analyzed the interactions between the construction and the interpretation of statistical graphs. The research, which is of the qualitative nature, occurred in a high school that has professional courses, located in Bahia and it is justified by the shortcomings pointed out by the demands of researches about statistical graphs. The data were collected through observations, documents and interviews with groups of students of technical courses in Agroindustry and Nursing. The analyze of the data shows, that in the interaction between the construction and the interpretation of statistical graphs, some graphs needed to be reconstructed due to the graph constructed previously, where misunderstandings and/or difficulties were identified in its interpretation. This generated a process which we call interaction between construction and interpretation of graphs. Refletindo sobre a interpretação de gráficos estatísticos em projetos de modelagem matemática com uso das tecnologias digitais: a presença de conhecimentos etnomatemáticos

Esta comunicação científica tem por objetivo apresentar um recorte de um estudo, realizado pelo primeiro autor sob orientação do segundo autor, em que se investigou a leitura, construção e interpretação de gráficos estatísticos em projetos de modelagem matemática com uso das Tecnologias Digitais (TD). No presente texto, o objetivo é investigar a presença dos conhecimentos etnomatemáticos no processo de interpretação de gráficos estatísticos em projetos de modelagem matemática com uso das TD. A literatura pontua que há poucos trabalhos que envolvem a temática de construção e interpretação de gráficos estatísticos e lacunas presentes na literatura apontam a necessidade de mais estudos. A pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, foi desenvolvida num colégio público de ensino médio técnico no interior da Bahia, Brasil, com alunos dos cursos de Agroindústria. Além dos conhecimentos matemáticos e socioculturais (experiências pessoais, expressões afetivas e referências contextuais), os dados apontam a presença de conhecimentos etnomatemáticos no processo de interpretação dos gráficos estatísticos, que se constituem em conhecimentos produzidos e resignificados para permitir a sobrevivência, equidade e transcendência das pessoas.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Inclusive university education viewed by the non disabled students

In this paper we present a study that tried to understand how university students without disability evaluate the impact of disability on academic life. This study is part of a major research project: Integration processes and academic success of university students with disability, which is supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation. The purpose was to understand what they thought would have to change in their life in order to continue to study, if they had a disability. In order to see if there were differences between types of disabilities we distinguished three of them: physical, visual and hearing. 160 university students of different knowledge domains answered to a Perception of Disability Impact on Academic Life Questionnaire. We found that students with an affiliation to human and social sciences show more positive perception of the impact of disability on the academic involvement. In the same way, this positive perception is manifested by students who have a colleague with disability in their classes.
