Complex critical exponents for percolation transitions in Josephson-junction arrays, antiferromagnets, and interacting bosons
We show that the critical behavior of quantum systems undergoing a
percolation transition is dramatically affected by their topological Berry
phase . For irrational , we demonstrate that the low-energy
excitations of diluted Josephson-junctions arrays, quantum antiferromagnets,
and interacting bosons are spinless fermions with fractal spectrum. As a
result, critical properties not captured by the usual Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson
description of phase transitions emerge, such as complex critical exponents,
log-periodic oscillations and dynamically broken scale-invariance.Comment: revised version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in fully allogeneic bone marrow chimera in mice
AKR mice were protected from lethal irradiation and established as long-lived chimeras by transplanting allogeneic C57BL/6 (B6) bone marrow that had been treated in vitro with anti-Thy-1 antiserum without complement. In these chimeras, which were designated [B6 {arrow} AKR], virtually all the thymus and spleen cells were shown to be derived from the B6 donor; several immune functions studied in these chimeras were as follows: (a) The chimeric mice were tolerant of histocompatibility antigens of both donor and recipient strain and nearly fully reactive to antigens of third party, as revealed by Simonsen's splenomegaly assay. The tolerance of these chimeras could not be attributed to suppressor cells but was compatible with clonal depletion. (b) Proliferative responses to concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin, and lipopolysaccharide as well as natural killer and antibody-dependent cell- mediated cytotoxicity activity of the chimeric mice was normal. (c) Plaque- forming cell (PFC) assays of antibody responses to sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) showed gross deficiency in the primary response of the [B6 {arrow} AKR] and [AKR {arrow} B6] chimeras. By contrast, [B6-H-2(k)(E(k)) {arrow} AKR] H-2-compatible chimeras and [AKR {arrow} AKR] syngeneic marrow transplanted mice had normal primary PFC responses. PFC responses after secondary stimulation with SRBC, however, revealed vigorous direct plaque formation and substantial but somewhat smaller indirect plaque formation in the [B6 {arrow} AKR] chimeras. This observation favors operationally the concept of adaptive differentiation proposed by Katz et al. (44). (d) Analysis of ability of the chimeras to develop and express delayed-type hypersensitivity responses to contact sensitizer (2,4-dinitro-l-fluorobenzene [DNFB]) showed no apparent immunodeficiency of either chimeras to this form of immunization. Development of immunologic tolerance to DNFB, however, was grossly deficient in [B6 {arrow} AKR] chimeras but normal in [AKR {arrow} AKR], [B6 {arrow} B6], and [E(k) {arrow} AKR] chimeras. These findings indicate that full chimeras across major histocompatibility complex have considerable immunologic vigor even though primary immune responses that require histocompatibility between interacting cell types are initially defective

Optical and Near Infrared Study of the Cepheus E outflow, a very low excitation object
We present images and spectra of the Cepheus E (Cep E) region at both optical
and infrared wavelengths. Only the brightest region of the southern lobe of the
Cep E outflow reveals optical emission, suggesting that the extinction close to
the outflow source plays an important r\^ole in the observed difference between
the optical and IR morphologies. Cep E is a unique object since it provides a
link between the spectroscopic properties of the optical Herbig-Haro (HH)

Costs Associated with Malaria in Pregnancy in the Brazilian Amazon, a Low Endemic Area Where Plasmodium vivax Predominates.
BACKGROUND: Information on costs associated with malaria in pregnancy (MiP) in low transmission areas where Plasmodium vivax predominates is so far missing. This study estimates health system and patient costs of MiP in the Brazilian Amazon. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Between January 2011 and March 2012 patient costs for the treatment of MiP were collected through an exit survey at a tertiary referral hospital and at a primary health care centre in the Manaus metropolitan area, Amazonas state. Pregnant and post-partum women diagnosed with malaria were interviewed after an outpatient consultation or at discharge after admission. Seventy-three interviews were included in the analysis. Ninety-six percent of episodes were due to P. vivax and 4% to Plasmodium falciparum. In 2010, the total median costs from the patient perspective were estimated at US 216.29 for an outpatient consultation and an admission, respectively. When multiple P. vivax infections during the same pregnancy were considered, patient costs increased up to US 103.51 for a P. vivax malaria episode and US 118.51 and US 17,038.50, of which 92.4% (US$ 15,741.14) due to P. vivax infection. CONCLUSION: Despite being an area of low risk malaria transmission, MiP is responsible for a significant economic burden in Manaus. Especially when multiple infections are considered, costs associated with P. vivax are higher than costs associated with P. falciparum. The information generated may help health policy decisions for the current control and future elimination of malaria in the area
Multicolour Optical Imaging of IR-Warm Seyfert Galaxies. V. Morphologies and Interactions. Challenging the Orientation Model
This paper is the last in a series, investigating the optical properties of a
sample of mid-IR Warm Seyfert galaxies and of a control sample of mid-IR cold
galaxies. In the present paper we parametrize the morphologies and interaction
properties of the host galaxies and combine these with the major conclusions in
our previous papers. Our results confirm that nuclear activity is linked to
galactic interactions. We suggest an alternative view for the simple
orientation-obscuration model postulated for Seyfert types 1 and 2, that takes
into account the time evolution of their environmental and morphological
properties. Within this view, an evolutionary link between starburst-dominated
and AGN-dominated IR emission is also suggested, to account for the

The Frequency of Active and Quiescent Galaxies with Companions: Implications for the Feeding of the Nucleus
We analyze the idea that nuclear activity, either AGN or star formation, can
be triggered by interactions, studying the percentage of active, HII and
quiescent galaxies with companions. Our sample was selected from the Palomar
survey, and avoids selection biases faced by previous studies. The comparison
between the local galaxy density distributions showed that in most cases there
is no statistically significant difference among galaxies of different activity
types. The comparison of the percentage of galaxies with nearby companions
showed that there is a higher percentage of LINERs, transition, and absorption
line galaxies with companions than Seyferts and HII galaxies. However, we find
that when we consider only galaxies of similar morphological types (ellipticals
or spirals), there is no difference in the percentage of galaxies with
companions among different activity types, indicating that the former result
was due to the morphology-density effect. Also, only small differences are
found when we consider galaxies with similar Halpha luminosities. The
comparison between HII galaxies of different Halpha luminosities shows that
there is a significantly higher percentage of galaxies with companions among
the higher luminosity HII galaxies, indicating that interactions increase the
amount of circumnuclear star formation, in agreement with previous results. The
fact that we find that galaxies of different activity types have the same
percentage of companions, suggests that interactions between galaxies is not a
necessary condition to trigger the nuclear activity in AGNs. We compare our
