    Experimental analysis of R-134a flow condensation in a smooth tube

    Paper presented at the 9th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Malta, 16-18 July, 2012.Condensation processes inside tubes are widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration industry, since they promote an improvement of the heat transfer, reducing the equipment size. The distribution of the liquid and vapour phases inside the tubes is crucial in the heat transfer process. Several studies have been carried out for flow regime maps and flow regime prediction techniques, in order to predict which flow pattern is expected according to parameters such as the geometry of the tubes, the flow rate and refrigerant properties. In this work, an experimental research was conducted to obtain different condensation flow patterns inside an 8 mm inner diameter smooth copper tube. Experiments were carried out for mass fluxes of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 kg/m2s, a saturation temperature of 40 ºC and varying the vapour quality from 0.20 to 0.80 at 0.15 intervals. Experimental photographs and videos are presented, discussed and compared against the results provided by some flow pattern maps and prediction techniques found in the literature.dc201

    K1,3-covering red and blue points in the plane

    We say that a finite set of red and blue points in the plane in general position can be K1, 3-covered if the set can be partitioned into subsets of size 4, with 3 points of one color and 1 point of the other color, in such a way that, if at each subset the fourth point is connected by straight-line segments to the same-colored points, then the resulting set of all segments has no crossings. We consider the following problem: Given a set R of r red points and a set B of b blue points in the plane in general position, how many points of R ¿ B can be K1, 3-covered? and we prove the following results: (1) If r = 3g + h and b = 3h + g, for some non-negative integers g and h, then there are point sets R ¿ B, like {1, 3}-equitable sets (i.e., r = 3b or b = 3r) and linearly separable sets, that can be K1, 3-covered. (2) If r = 3g + h, b = 3h + g and the points in R ¿ B are in convex position, then at least r + b - 4 points can be K1, 3-covered, and this bound is tight. (3) There are arbitrarily large point sets R ¿ B in general position, with r = b + 1, such that at most r + b - 5 points can be K1, 3-covered. (4) If b = r = 3b, then at least 9 8 (r + b- 8) points of R ¿ B can be K1, 3-covered. For r > 3b, there are too many red points and at least r - 3b of them will remain uncovered in any K1, 3-covering.     Experimental determination of the boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-134a and R-417a on a smooth copper tube

They consist of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, with the fluid to cool flowing inside the tube bundle and a refrigerant that evaporates over those tubes. Pool boiling on the external surface of the tubes is a very complex process and, therefore, an experimental analysis is required in order to determine the boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs). Copper and copper alloys tubes are commonly employed in such heat exchangers, due to their high thermal conductivity and low cost when compared to other materials. On the other hand, refrigeration and air conditioning sectors are undergoing significant changes caused mainly by the necessity of replacing existing refrigerants with more environmentally-friendly ones. This paper reports the work carried out to determine pool boiling HTCs of two HFCs refrigerants, R-134a and R-417A blend on a smooth copper tube with and outer diameter of 18.87 mm, at two saturation temperatures of 10 ºC and 7 ºC. This work has been done experimentally by means of a test rig specifically designed and prepared for the study of these processes. The experimental setup and data acquisition are described, the experimental procedure is explained, the data reduction methodology is detailed and the results are presented and discussed.dc201

    Simulation and experimental validation of a helical coil used as condenser in a heat pump for domestic water heating in a tank

The purpose of this work was to simulate the behavior of a helical coil used as condenser in a heat pump for domestic hot water heating in a tank. The simulation was carried out by developing a mathematical model. The mathematical model was implemented in a computer program. The program results were validated against the experimental results obtained by using an experimental set-up. In the paper the mathematical model is detailed, the experimental setup and the experimental procedure are described and the results are presented and discussed.dc201

    A bilateral whitish lesion on the mucosa of the cheek

    An 8-year-old girl with no medical history presented with a bilateral whitish lesion on the mucosa of the cheek, evident since early childhood. There was no relevant family history, and her parents had not presented similar lesions. They reported a progressive growth of the lesion in the last months, for which she had been evaluated by maxillofacial surgery, the lesion being oriented as a frictional keratosis. However, the use of occlusal splint was not associated with any improvement. She was otherwise asymptomatic. Physical examination revealed a bilateral, whitish, well-demarcated cheek mucosal plaque, which partially coincided with the dental occlusion line. The lesion did not detach with scratching (Figure 1). No other alterations were observed in the oral cavity or in the systematic physical examination

    Sex-related differences of fatty acid-binding protein 4 and leptin levels in atrial fibrillation

    Aims: Adiposity plays a key role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Our aim was to study the sex differences in adipokines levels according to AF burden. Methods and results: Two independent cohorts of patients were studied: (i) consecutive patients with AF undergoing catheter ablation (n = 217) and (ii) a control group (n = 105). (i) Adipokines, oxidative stress, indirect autonomic markers, and leucocytes mRNA levels were analysed; (ii) correlation between biomarkers was explored with heatmaps and Kendall correlation coefficients; and (iii) logistic regression and random forest model were used to determine predictors of AF recurrence after ablation. Our results showed that: (i) fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) and leptin levels were higher in women than in men in both cohorts (P < 0.01). In women, FABP4 levels were higher on AF cohort (20 ± 14 control, 29 ± 18 paroxysmal AF and 31 ± 17 ng/mL persistent AF; P < 0.01). In men, leptin levels were lower on AF cohort (22 ± 15 control, 13 ± 16 paroxysmal AF and 13 ± 11 ng/mL persistent AF; P < 0.01). (ii) In female with paroxysmal AF, there was a lower acetylcholinesterase and higher carbonic anhydrase levels with respect to men (P < 0.05). (iii) Adipokines have an important role on discriminate AF recurrence after ablation. In persistent AF, FABP4 was the best predictor of recurrence after ablation (1.067, 95% confidence interval 1-1.14; P = 0.046). Conclusion: The major finding of the present study is the sex-based differences of FABP4 and leptin levels according to AF burden.     The neural substrate and functional integration of uncertainty in decision making: an information theory approach

    Decision making can be regarded as the outcome of cognitive processes leading to the selection of a course of action among several alternatives. Borrowing a central measurement from information theory, Shannon entropy, we quantified the uncertainties produced by decisions of participants within an economic decision task under different configurations of reward probability and time. These descriptors were used to obtain blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal correlates of uncertainty and two clusters codifying the Shannon entropy of task configurations were identified: a large cluster including parts of the right middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and left and right pre-supplementary motor areas (pre-SMA) and a small cluster at the left anterior thalamus. Subsequent functional connectivity analyses using the psycho-physiological interactions model identified areas involved in the functional integration of uncertainty. Results indicate that clusters mostly located at frontal and temporal cortices experienced an increased connectivity with the right MCC and left and right pre-SMA as the uncertainty was higher. Furthermore, pre-SMA was also functionally connected to a rich set of areas, most of them associative areas located at occipital and parietal lobes.     Retrospective cohort study: Risk of gastrointestinal cancer in a symptomatic cohort after a complete colonoscopy: Role of faecal immunochemical test

    BACKGROUND: Faecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been recommended to assess symptomatic patients for colorectal cancer (CRC) detection. Nevertheless, some conditions could theoretically favour blood originating in proximal areas of the gastrointestinal tract passing through the colon unmetabolized. A positive FIT result could be related to other gastrointestinal cancers (GIC). AIM: To assess the risk of GIC detection and related death in FIT-positive symptomatic patients (threshold 10 µg Hb/g faeces) without CRC. METHODS: Post hoc cohort analysis performed within two prospective diagnostic test studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of different FIT analytical systems for CRC and significant colonic lesion detection. Ambulatory patients with gastrointestinal symptoms referred consecutively for colonoscopy from primary and secondary healthcare, underwent a quantitative FIT before undergoing a complete colonoscopy. Patients without CRC were divided into two groups (positive and negative FIT) using the threshold of 10 µg Hb/g of faeces and data from follow-up were retrieved from electronic medical records of the public hospitals involved in the research. We determined the cumulative risk of GIC, CRC and upper GIC. Hazard rate (HR) was calculated adjusted by age, sex and presence of significant colonic lesion. RESULTS: We included 2709 patients without CRC and a complete baseline colonoscopy, 730 (26.9%) with FIT = 10 µgr Hb/gr. During a mean time of 45.5 ± 20.0 mo, a GIC was detected in 57 (2.1%) patients: An upper GIC in 35 (1.3%) and a CRC in 14 (0.5%). Thirty-six patients (1.3%) died due to GIC: 22 (0.8%) due to an upper GIC and 9 (0.3%) due to CRC. FIT-positive subjects showed a higher CRC risk (HR 3.8, 95%CI: 1.2-11.9) with no differences in GIC (HR 1.5, 95%CI: 0.8-2.7) or upper GIC risk (HR 1.0, 95%CI: 0.5-2.2). Patients with a positive FIT had only an increased risk of CRC-related death (HR 10.8, 95%CI: 2.1-57.1) and GIC-related death (HR 2.2, 95%CI: 1.1-4.3), with no differences in upper GIC-related death (HR 1.4, 95%CI: 0.6-3.3). An upper GIC was detected in 22 (0.8%) patients during the first year. Two variables were independently associated: anaemia (OR 5.6, 95%CI: 2.2-13.9) and age = 70 years (OR 2.7, 95%CI: 1.1-7.0). CONCLUSION: Symptomatic patients without CRC have a moderate risk increase in upper GIC, regardless of the FIT result. Patients with a positive FIT have an increased risk of post-colonoscopy CRC

    Consensus-based technical recommendations for clinical translation of renal ASL MRI

    Objectives: To develop technical recommendations for the acquisition, processing and analysis of renal ASL data in the human kidney at 1.5T and 3T field strengths that can promote standardization of renal perfusion measurements and facilitate the comparability of results across scanners and in multi-center clinical studies.Methods: An international panel of 23 renal ASL experts followed a modified Delphi process, including on-line surveys and two in-person meetings, to formulate a series of consensus statements regarding patient preparation, hardware, acquisition protocol, analysis steps and data reporting.Results: Fifty-nine statements achieved consensus, while agreement could not be reached on two statements related to patient preparation. As a default protocol, the panel recommends pseudo-continuous (PCASL) or flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) labeling with a single-slice spin-echo EPI readout with background suppression, and a simple but robust quantification model.Discussion: This approach is considered robust and reproducible and can provide renal perfusion images of adequate quality and SNR for most applications. If extended kidney coverage is desirable, a 2D multislice readout is recommended. These recommendations are based on current available evidence and expert opinion. Nonetheless they are expected to be updated as more data becomes available, since the renal ASL literature is rapidly expanding
