Enabling Fast and Energy-Efficient FM-index Exact Matching using Processing-Near-Memory
Memory bandwidth and latency constitutes a major performance bottleneck for many data-intensive applications. While high-locality access patterns take advantage of the deep cache hierarchies available in modern processors, unpredictable low-locality patterns cause a significant part of the execution time to be wasted waiting for data. An example of those memory bound applications is the exact matching algorithm based on FM-index, used in some well-known sequence alignment applications. Processing-Near-Memory (PNM) has been proposed as a strategy to overcome the memory wall problem, by placing computation close to data, speeding up memory bound workloads by reducing data movements.
This paper presents a performance and energy evaluation of two classes of processor architectures when executing the FM-index exact matching algorithm, as a reference algorithm for exact sequence alignment. One architecture class is processor-centric, based on complex cores and DDR3/4 SDRAM memory technology. The other architecture class is memory-centric, based on simple cores and ultra high-bandwidth Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) 3D-stacked memory technology. The results show that the PNM solution improves performance between 1.26Ă— and 3.7Ă— and the energy consumption per operation is reduced between 21Ă— and 40Ă—.
In addition, a synthetic benchmark RANDOM was developed that mimics the memory access pattern of the FM-index exact matching algorithm, but with a user configurable operational intensity. This benchmark allows us to extend the evaluation to the class of algorithms with similar memory behaviour but running over a range of operational intensity values.TIN2016-80920-R, PID2019-105396RB-I00, UMA18-FEDERJA-19

Affective pictures and the Open Library of Affective Foods (OLAF): tools to investigate emotions toward food in adults
Recently, several sets of standardized food pictures have been created, supplying both food images and their subjective evaluations. However, to date only the OLAF (Open Library of Affective Foods), a set of food images and ratings we developed in adolescents, has the specific purpose of studying emotions toward food. Moreover, some researchers have argued that food evaluations are not valid across individuals and groups, unless feelings toward food cues are compared with feelings toward intense experiences unrelated to food, that serve as benchmarks. Therefore the OLAF presented here, comprising a set of original food images and a group of standardized highly emotional pictures, is intended to provide valid between-group judgments in adults. Emotional images (erotica, mutilations, and neutrals from the International Affective Picture System/IAPS) additionally ensure that the affective ratings are consistent with emotion research. The OLAF depicts high-calorie sweet and savory foods and low-calorie fruits and vegetables, portraying foods within natural scenes matching the IAPS features. An adult sample evaluated both food and affective pictures in terms of pleasure, arousal, dominance, and food craving, following standardized affective rating procedures. The affective ratings for the emotional pictures corroborated previous findings, thus confirming the reliability of evaluations for the food images. Among the OLAF images, high-calorie sweet and savory foods elicited the greatest pleasure, although they elicited, as expected, less arousal than erotica. The observed patterns were consistent with research on emotions and confirmed the reliability of OLAF evaluations. The OLAF and affective pictures constitute a sound methodology to investigate emotions toward food within a wider motivational framework. The OLAF is freely accessible at digibug.ugr.es
Chirped-pulse phase-sensitive reflectometry
X ReuniĂłn Española de OptoelectrĂłnica (OPTOEL17), 12/07/2017-14/07/2017, Santiago de Compostela, España.In this work, a new distributed fiber sensor named chirped-pulse phase-sensitive OTDR is presented. It is based on a phase-sensitive OTDR using direct detection and linearly chirped pulses. The new sensor allows the dynamic and quantitative measurement of temperature/strain changes, with mK/nĂĄ resolution. The technique does not require a frequency sweep or coherent detection. It is presented the fundamentals of the sensor and measurements of temperature, vibrations and music.European CommissionMinisterio de EconomĂa y CompetitividadComunidad de Madri
Beneficial effects of the phytocannabinoid Δ9-THCV in L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease
The antioxidant and CB2 receptor agonist properties of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabivarin (Δ9-THCV) afforded neuroprotection in experimental Parkinson's disease (PD), whereas its CB1 receptor antagonist profile at doses lower than 5 mg/kg caused anti-hypokinetic effects. In the present study, we investigated the anti-dyskinetic potential of Δ9-THCV (administered i.p. at 2 mg/kg for two weeks), which had not been investigated before. This objective was investigated after inducing dyskinesia by repeated administration of L-DOPA (i.p. at 10 mg/kg) in a genetic model of dopaminergic deficiency, Pitx3ak mutant mice, which serves as a useful model for testing anti-dyskinetic agents. The daily treatment of these mice with L-DOPA for two weeks progressively increased the time spent in abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) and elevated their horizontal and vertical activities (as measured in a computer-aided actimeter), signs that reflected the dyskinetic state of these mice. Interestingly, when combined with L-DOPA from the first injection, Δ9-THCV delayed the appearance of all these signs and decreased their intensity, with a reduction in the levels of FosB protein and the histone pAcH3 (measured by immunohistochemistry), which had previously been found to be elevated in the basal ganglia in L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. In addition to the anti-dyskinetic effects of Δ9-THCV when administered at the onset of L-DOPA treatment, Δ9-THCV was also effective in attenuating the intensity of dyskinesia when administered for three consecutive days once these signs were already present (two weeks after the onset of L-DOPA treatment). In summary, our data support the anti-dyskinetic potential of Δ9-THCV, both to delay the occurrence and to attenuate the magnitude of dyskinetic signs. Although further studies are clearly required to determine the clinical significance of these data in humans, the results nevertheless situate Δ9-THCV in a promising position for developing a cannabinoid-based therapy for patients with PD.Fil: Espadas, Isabel.
