Bayesian joint spatio-temporal analysis of multiple diseases

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal model for the joint analysis of multiple diseases which includes specific and shared spatial and temporal effects. Dependence on shared terms is controlled by disease-specific weights so that their posterior distribution can be used to identify diseases with similar spatial and temporal patterns. The model proposed here has been used to study three different causes of death (oral cavity, esophagus and stomach cancer) in Spain at the province level. Shared and specific spatial and temporal effects have been estimated and mapped in order to study similarities and differences among these causes. Furthermore, estimates using Markov chain Monte Carlo and the integrated nested Laplace approximation are compared.Peer Reviewe

FGF2, but not EGF, Induces multiciliated ependymal cells to dedifferentiate and adopt radial glial features in vitro

Multiciliated ependymal cells form an epithelium lining most of the ventricular cavities of vertebrates brain. Although considered postmitotic and completely differentiated, ependymal cells maintain some phenotypic characteristics of neural stem cells. Thereby, under specific conditions they behave as neural stem cells, developing radial glia characteristics, and undergoing asymmetric division. Our group is searching for factors that promote dedifferentiation of ependymal cells in vitro. We developed a simple method to obtain pure cultures of non-adherent multiciliated ependymal cells from adult rats. These cultures were used to investigate the effect of FGF2 on the differentiation state and the aggregation of ependymal cells. Thus, FGF2 treated ependymal cells lose cilia and hence mobility, and after 7 days they aggregate to form irregular spheres (diameter ≥ 20-30 μm). Such changes were not observed when EFG was used instead of FGF2. To assess the specificity of FGF2 action on cell aggregation, the FGF receptor inhibitor PD166866 and an anti-FGF2 neutralizing antibody were used. In both conditions the aggregative effect of FGF2 was abolished. No cell proliferation was observed during sphere formation, at least in such experimental conditions. Spheres were analyzed by immunocytochemistry using radial glia markers. They were positive for GFAP, vimentin, BLBP and GLAST. These data suggest that FGF2 promotes the identity loss in multiciliated ependymal cells in vitro, which are transformed into cells with radial glia features. This research was intended to investigate (test) the knowledge of the students of master degree in Elementary Education from the Faculty of Teacher Training Lugo about their knowledge on first aid and C.P.R, before and after receiving a theoretical day training practice of three hours in three different ways (First(1)-exhibition-demonstration, Second(2)- solving a practical situation of the problem in small groups and third(3)- solving a practical situation of the problem with a large group). The sample (N = 23) consisted of 9 men (39.1%) and 14 women (60.9%) studying the degree of P.E. To find out the previous knowledge about the topic and at the end of the training session we created a test that was giving to them previous the training First test(FT) and after training day Second test(ST) to see the progress of the students after the training , a questionnaire with 25 items Ad Hoc was given. The descriptive results of the FC revealed a lack of knowledge of future teachers in the P.E topic of first aid. These procedures have been identified to make an improvement of the new teachers with appropriated training sessions. In data obtained from the ST, we reach on average more than a 90% of correct answers proving the efficacy of the methodology and duration of training given in short period of time. The retention of knowledge about this topic was shown as a limitation of the study and will be evaluated later on. In conclusion, the importance of the knowledge on the topic first aid and C.P.R in future teachers of P.E is proved after doing the test and is proposed as part of the topics to be teach on the degree

Traditionally the legislator of the Corporate Tax has come regulating a tax benefit to bring on corporate reinvestment, being that, also traditionally, has been a constant focus of conflict specify the required requirements, especially when it comes to terrains of real estate companies, where the barrier between the accounting concepts of stocks and immobilized is very diffuse. Hence in this paper we have dealt with to study in detail such requirements in the light of scientific and jurisprudential doctrines susceptible to bring to collation.
