    Derivation of a multilayer approach to model suspended sediment transport: application to hyperpycnal and hypopycnal plumes

    We propose a multi-layer approach to simulate hyperpycnal and hypopycnal plumes in flows with free surface. The model allows to compute the vertical profile of the horizontal and the vertical components of the velocity of the fluid flow. The model can describe as well the vertical profile of the sediment concentration and the velocity components of each one of the sediment species that form the turbidity current. To do so, it takes into account the settling velocity of the particles and their interaction with the fluid. This allows to better describe the phenomena than a single layer approach. It is in better agreement with the physics of the problem and gives promising results. The numerical simulation is carried out by rewriting the multi-layer approach in a compact formulation, which corresponds to a system with non-conservative products, and using path-conservative numerical scheme. Numerical results are presented in order to show the potential of the model

    Modelo fenomenológico para la predicción del aceite extraído de Moringa oleífera utilizando un equipo de laboratorio Soxhlet

    Moringa oleifera is an oilseed crop with poten­tial for biodiesel production. The second step in this process is the extraction of oil. Extraction in hot water, with a Soxhlet apparatus and the ultrasound technique are the most commonly used methods. The aim of the present work was to obtain a phenomenological model for the Moringa oleifera oil extraction process using Soxhlet. Effective diffusivity for Moringa oil through the kernels is obtained, using the kinetics of the extraction process (experimentally determined) and the Fick’s diffusion second law for non-steady state. The value of 0.685·10-12 m2/s fully matched reports on effective diffusion coefficient for other solids. It was also verified from the statistical analysis and a linear fit for experimental data that the model can be used to describe the oil extraction process of Moringa oleifera in the Soxhlet extractor, responding to the diffusive phenomenon (process controlled by internal resistance).Moringa oleífera es un cultivo oleaginoso con potencial para producir biodiesel. La segunda etapa del proceso es la extracción de aceite. Los métodos más utilizados son la extracción en agua caliente, con Soxhlet y la técnica de ultrasonidos. El objetivo del trabajo fue obtener un modelo fenomenológico para el proceso de extracción de aceite de Moringa oleífera en Soxhlet. Utilizando la cinética del proceso extractivo (determinada experimentalmente) y la segunda ley de difusión de Fick en estado no estacionario, se obtuvo la difusividad efectiva del aceite de Moringa a través de los cotiledones. El valor de 0.685·10-12 m2/s, se corresponde con reportes del coeficiente de difusión efectiva para otros sólidos. Se verificó a partir del análisis estadístico y ajuste lineal de los datos experimentales, que el modelo describe el proceso de extracción de aceite de Moringa oleífera en Soxhlet, respondiendo al fenómeno difusivo (proceso controlado por la resistencia interna)

    Observation of strong wavelength-shifting in the argon-tetrafluoromethane system

    We report the scintillation spectra of Ar-CF4_4 mixtures in the range 210-800~nm, obtained under X-ray irradiation for various pressures (1-5~bar) and concentrations (0-100%). Special care was taken to eliminate effects related to space charge and recombination, so that results can be extrapolated following conventional wisdom to those expected for minimum ionizing particles under the typical electric fields employed in gaseous instrumentation. Our study sheds light into the microscopic pathways leading to scintillation in this family of mixtures.Comment: Updated to match current journal submissio

    Density and reproductive characteristics of female brown bears in the Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain

    Here we present annual nearest-neighbour distances (as a proxy of density) between females with cubs-of-the-year (hereafter FCOY) and reproductive characteristics of brown bears Ursus arctos in the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain), from 1989 to 2017. FCOY nearest-neighbour distances and reproduction parameters of 19 focal females followed over several consecutive years (from 2004 to 2017) were obtained from bears inhabiting the western sector of the Cantabrian Mountains, where most of the bear population resides. In contrast, general reproductive characteristics were studied in the whole Cantabrian Mountains (western and eastern sectors together) on a sample of 362 litter sizes and 695 cubs. Mean nearest-neighbour distance between FCOY was 2559 ± 1222 m (range = 1305–4757 m). Mean litter size was significantly larger in the west (1.8 ± 0.2 cubs) than in the east (1.3 ± 0.6 cubs). Mean litter size for the whole of the Cantabrian Mountains was 1.6 ± 0.3 cubs. Litter sizes of one, two and three cubs represented 33.4, 56.1 and 10.5% of observed family groups, respectively. Interannual variations in litter size were not significant for both the western and the eastern areas. Mean cub mortality was 0.2 ± 0.5 cubs and did not vary among years. Cub mortality per litter size was 3.9% for one cub, 69.2% for two cubs and 26.9% for three cubs. Mean reproductive rate of the 19 focal females was 1.5 ± 0.6 cubs (n = 58 litters). Litter size of focal FCOY did not differ from the litter size obtained from systematic observations in the whole Cantabrian Mountains. During this period, cub mortality occurred in 24.1% of the 58 litters. Females usually bred every second year (average litter interval = 2.2 years).     It is shown that the radial part of the Hydrogen Hamiltonian factorizes as the product of two not mutually adjoint first order differential operators plus a complex constant epsilon. The 1-susy approach is used to construct non-hermitian Hamiltonians with hydrogen spectra. Other non-hermitian Hamiltonians are shown to admit an extra `complex energy' at epsilon.     SDSS IV MaNGA: Dependence of Global and Spatially Resolved SFR-M ∗ Relations on Galaxy Properties

    Indexación: Scopus.The galaxy integrated Hα star formation rate-stellar mass relation, or SFR(global)-M ∗(global) relation, is crucial for understanding star formation history and evolution of galaxies. However, many studies have dealt with SFR using unresolved measurements, which makes it difficult to separate out the contamination from other ionizing sources, such as active galactic nuclei and evolved stars. Using the integral field spectroscopic observations from SDSS-IV MaNGA, we spatially disentangle the contribution from different Hα powering sources for ∼1000 galaxies. We find that, when including regions dominated by all ionizing sources in galaxies, the spatially resolved relation between Hα surface density (ΣHα(all)) and stellar mass surface density (Σ∗(all)) progressively turns over at the high Σ∗(all) end for increasing M ∗(global) and/or bulge dominance (bulge-to-total light ratio, B/T). This in turn leads to the flattening of the integrated Hα(global)-M ∗(global) relation in the literature. By contrast, there is no noticeable flattening in both integrated Hα(H ii)-M ∗(H ii) and spatially resolved ΣHα(H ii)-Σ∗(H ii) relations when only regions where star formation dominates the ionization are considered. In other words, the flattening can be attributed to the increasing regions powered by non-star-formation sources, which generally have lower ionizing ability than star formation. An analysis of the fractional contribution of non-star-formation sources to total Hα luminosity of a galaxy suggests a decreasing role of star formation as an ionizing source toward high-mass, high-B/T galaxies and bulge regions. This result indicates that the appearance of the galaxy integrated SFR-M ∗ relation critically depends on their global properties (M ∗(global) and B/T) and relative abundances of various ionizing sources within the galaxies.http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/aaa9bc/met

    Seroprevalencia y factores de riesgo del virus de parainfluenza 3 (VPI-3) en bovinos de Colombia

    Bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (IPV-3) is considered one of the most important pathogens associated with bovine respiratory diseases. It is considered as a part of the bovine respiratory complex, since it is a multifactorial disease associated with the manifestation of different etiological agents that cause pneumonia or upper respiratory tract infections in all cattle ages. It is widely distributed worldwide and is characterized by causing symptoms such as severe bronchopneumonia, cough, anorexia, pyrexia, nasal and eye secretions, dyspnea and sometimes diarrhea. The objective was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of parainfluenzavirus (IPV-3) in cattle from the Oicatá (Boyacá, Colombia). Blood samples were collected from 360 bovine females, which were processed in the Veterinary Parasitology Laboratory of the Colombia University through the implementation of the ELISA Primacheck (Agrolabo, Spain). The seroprevalence of IPV-3 in the municipality of Oicatá was 31%, however, no statistical association was found with the breed and age of the individuals evaluated. The seroprevalence of the disease is high in this municipality, which directly affects the productivity and profitability of productions, for this reason it is necessary to implement control and prevention plans for this pathology.El virus de la parainfluenza bovina tipo 3 (VPI-3) es considerado como uno de los patógenos más importantes asociados con las enfermedades respiratorias bovinas. Está calificado como parte del complejo respiratorio bovino, porque es una enfermedad multifactorial asociada a la manifestación de diferentes agentes etiológicos que causan neumonía o infección de las vías respiratorias superiores, en todas las edades del ganado. Está ampliamente distribuido a nivel mundial y se caracteriza por causar síntomas como bronconeumonía grave, tos, anorexia, pirexia, secreciones nasales y oculares, disnea y -a veces- diarrea. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la seroprevalencia y los factores de riesgo del virus de parainfluenza en bovinos del municipio de Oicatá (Boyacá, Colombia). Se recolectaron 360 muestras de sangre de hembras bovinas, las cuales se procesaron mediante la implementación del kit comercial ELISA PrimacheckVPI-3®, Agrolabo (España). La seroprevalencia de VPI-3 fue del 31%, sin embargo no se encontró asociación estadística con la raza y edad de los individuos evaluados. La seroprevalencia de la enfermedad es elevada en Oicatá, afectando directamente a la productividad y rentabilidad de la producción animal, razón por la cual se hace necesaria la implementación de planes de control y prevención de dicha patología
