The objective of this study is to compare the constructive thinking, a measure of emotional intelligence, between a clinical sample of adult patients diagnosed with dual diagnosis and a non-clinical sample. Method: By means of a comparative design of investigation, a not clinical sample of 835 subjects was compared with a sample of 180 subjects diagnosed of dual diagnosis: 78 with clinical disorders or of the Axix I and 102 with disorders of the personality or of the Axis II, according to DSM-TR-IV. Results: The results indicate a constructive thinking greater than in the non-clinical sample, as well as a destructive thinking higher in the sample with dual diagnosis. There were no differences between clinical disorders and personality. Conclusions: The clinic sample presents a destructive pattern of coping or no adaptative compared with non-clinical population, which in the case of patients with personality disorders is increased by illusions and superstitions and esoteric thoughts that contribute to their coping deficit

The floating system is a successful strategy for producing baby leaf vegetables. Moreover, compost from agricultural and agri-food industry wastes is an alternative to peat that can be used as a component of growing media in this cultivation system. In this study, we experimented with three composts containing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), leek (Allium porrum L.), grape (Vitis vinifera L.), and/or olive (Olea europaea L.) mill cake residues, which were used as the main component (75/25 volume/volume) of three growing media (GM1, GM2 and GM3) to evaluate their e_ect on the growth and quality of red baby leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). We used a commercial peat substrate as a control treatment (100% volume) and in mixtures (25% volume) with the composts. The plants were cultivated over two growing cycles, in spring and summer, and harvested twice in each cycle when the plants had four to five leaves. We found that the percentage of seed germination was significantly higher in plants grown in peat than in those grown in compost growing media. The yield was a_ected by the growing media in the summer cycle, and we obtained the highest value with GM1. Furthermore, the second cut was more productive than the first one for all the growing media in both cycles. The lettuce quality was also a_ected by the growing media. In general, the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in the leaves was higher in plants grown in the compost growing media, particularly in the second cut, but the nitrate content in the leaves was greater in some of the compost treatments compared with the peat treatment. In addition, an in vitro suppressive activity study demonstrated that the interaction between di_erent fungi and bacteria observed through metagenomics analysis could contribute to the e_ectiveness of the compost in controlling Pythium irregulare. The use of compost as a component of the growing media in the production of baby leaf vegetables in a floating system does not only favor the crop yield and producto quality, but also shows suppressive e_ects against P. irregulare. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness: Reference project: AGL2017-84085-C3-1-R, AGL2017-84085-C3-2-R, AGL2017-84085-C3-3-R

Anthocyanins and tannins in four grape varieties (<em>Vitis vinifera</em> L.). Evolution of their content and extractability

    No full text
Aims: The knowledge of parameters as the quantity of anthocyanins and tannins present during grape maturation, their evolution during the ripening period and extractability data could improve the management of red wine fermentation and help predict the color of wines. Methods and results: Grapes from Vitis vinifera var. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Monastrell were harvested in 2002, 2003 and 2004 from a commercial vineyards and their physicochemical characteristics together with the anthocyanin and tannin evolution during ripening were followed. The results showed that differences were found in the evolution of these compounds due to variety and year. Conclusions: Some of the studied parameters seemed to be clearly related to variety (berry weight and extractability index) and others seemed to be clearly affected by soil and edaphoclimatic conditions. The high extractability index in Monastrell reflects the difficulty involved in extracting their anthocyanins. The short maturation period observed for Merlot grapes and the high seed tannin index could lead to excessively astringent wines. Significance and impact of the study: This study demonstrate that the ripening period of some varieties (Merlot) in very warm conditions is too short, promoting the rapid accumulation of sugar in the pulp and an incomplete seed maturation that may lead to excessively astringent wines. Other varieties, e.g. Monastrell, show longer maturation period that usually permits pulp and seed maturity to be reached at the moment of harvest. The extractability index seems to be closely related to the grape variety and this is also an important fact to take into account when planning a vinification process

The Latin documentation preserved in the Iberian Peninsula appears to reflect a profound break between the seventh century, characterised by the prevalence of law, a continuation of Antiquity, and the entirely mediaeval tenth century, ruled by custom. While the Visigothic age bequeathed numerous legal statutes, the Christian kingdoms of the north were long bereft of any legislation, be it secular or ecclesiastic. Nonetheless, historians are at risk of misinterpreting what is undeniably a distortion—all the more tempting in light of the break that took place in 711—and accepting the vision of an ancient world governed by positive law in opposition to a mediaeval world alien to the rule of law. This dossier returns to sources of widely-varying natures, approaching the law as a living, manifold entity, aever at the heart of society’s vital interests

Switching TNF antagonists in patients with chronic arthritis: An observational study of 488 patients over a four-year period

    No full text
The objective of this work is to analyze the survival of infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab in patients who have switched among tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists for the treatment of chronic arthritis. BIOBADASER is a national registry of patients with different forms of chronic arthritis who are treated with biologics. Using this registry, we have analyzed patient switching of TNF antagonists. The cumulative discontinuation rate was calculated using the actuarial method. The log-rank test was used to compare survival curves, and Cox regression models were used to assess independent factors associated with discontinuing medication. Between February 2000 and September 2004, 4,706 patients were registered in BIOBADASER, of whom 68% had rheumatoid arthritis, 11% ankylosing spondylitis, 10% psoriatic arthritis, and 11% other forms of chronic arthritis. One- and two-year drug survival rates of the TNF antagonist were 0.83 and 0.75, respectively. There were 488 patients treated with more than one TNF antagonist. In this situation, survival of the second TNF antagonist decreased to 0.68 and 0.60 at 1 and 2 years, respectively. Survival was better in patients replacing the first TNF antagonist because of adverse events (hazard ratio (HR) for discontinuation 0.55 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.34-0.84)), and worse in patients older than 60 years (HR 1.10 (95% CI 0.97-2.49)) or who were treated with infliximab (HR 3.22 (95% CI 2.13-4.87)). In summary, in patients who require continuous therapy and have failed to respond to a TNF antagonist, replacement with a different TNF antagonist may be of use under certain situations. This issue will deserve continuous reassessment with the arrival of new medications. © 2006 Gomez-Reino and Loreto Carmona; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
