Multiple Paleozoic magmatic-orogenic events in the Central Extremadura batholith (Iberian Variscan belt, Spain)
Background The Central Extremadura batholith located in the southeast part of the Central Iberian Zone (e.g. Iberian
Autochthonous domain of the Iberian Variscan belt) was originally thought to have been generated entirely during Carboniferous
igneous activity. However, some recent geochronological work has shown the existence of Ordovician plutonic rocks.
Purpose The aim of this study is to re-examine the age of granitic rocks in the Central Extremadura batholith and complement
this information with new field and geochemical data. This data set is used: to constrain the relative timing of plutons
emplacement, as well as deformation and metamorphism preserved in the host rocks; to track deep crustal rocks and granitic
magma sources; and to discuss prevailing tectonic evolutionary models for the Paleozoic evolution of the Iberian Variscan
belt.
Methods We use geochemical and SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology data of three granitic plutons (Ruanes, Plasenzuela
and Albalá) from the Central Extremadura batholith to track magmatic sources and provide a better understanding of temporal
and spatial relationships between deformation and magmatism in the Iberian Variscan belt.
Results Ruanes tonalite dated at 464 ± 2 Ma is peraluminous, magnesian and calc-alkaline, as typical of a magmatic arc
setting. We report, for the first time, the occurrence of a Middle Ordovician intrusion spatially and temporally related to host
deformed rocks of the Central Iberian Zone (e.g. the Iberian Autochthonous domain), which reached high-grade metamorphic
conditions. Plasenzuela two-mica leucogranite is strongly peraluminous and of anatectic origin and includes a Neoproterozoic
and Ordovician population of inherited zircon grains. This granite possibly derived from the partial melting of a crustal
source composed of Neoproterozoic metapelites and metagreywackes (Schist-Greywacke Complex) and/or Lower Ordovician
gneisses (Ollo de Sapo Formation), both including greywackes of volcano-sedimentary origin and peraluminous composition.
The crystallization age of 330 ± 7 Ma obtained for the syn-kinematic Plasenzuela two-mica leucogranite constrains the
functioning of D2 dextral strike-slip shear zones within the Iberian Autochthonous domain. The age of 309 ± 2 Ma obtained
for the Albalá cordierite-bearing monzogranite matches the age interval of the calc-alkaline magmatic suite post-dating the
main Variscan D1–D3 structures in the Iberian Autochthonous domain.
Conclusion The new data presented in this study make it possible to recognize multiple Paleozoic magmatic-orogenic events
(e.g. Caledonian, Variscan and Cimmerian) in the Central Extremadura batholith. During the Ordovician, the emplacement
of intermediate magmas at shallow depths gave rise to extensive metamorphism due to heat transfer to the host rocks. The
onset of this Ordovician plutonic–metamorphic complex in the Iberian Autochthonous domain is contemporaneous with
the development of an active continental margin probably related to the subduction of the Iapetus–Tornquist Ocean (i.e.
the Caledonian orogeny). During the Lower Carboniferous, these D2 strike-slip domains acted as lateral margins of largescale
gravitational collapses associated with the SE-direct transport of low-angle extensional shear zones (i.e. the Variscan
cycle). The emplacement of Upper Carboniferous arc type granitic rocks is interpreted in the context of the amalgamation
of Pangaea and the spatial proximity of Iberia relative to the Eurasian active margin in the course of Paleotethys subduction
(i.e. the Cimmerian orogeny)

Microscopic theory for quantum mirages in quantum corrals
Scanning tunneling microscopy permits to image the Kondo resonance of a
single magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic surface. When the magnetic impurity
is placed at the focus of an elliptical quantum corral, a Kondo resonance has
been recently observed both on top of the impurity and on top of the focus
where no magnetic impurity is present. This projection of the Kondo resonance
to a remote point on the surface is referred to as quantum mirage. We present a
quantum mechanical theory for the quantum mirage inside an ideal quantum corral
and predict that the mirage will occur in corrals with shapes other than
elliptical
The G_2 sphere over a 4-manifold
We present a construction of a canonical G_2 structure on the unit sphere
tangent bundle S_M of any given orientable Riemannian 4-manifold M. Such
structure is never geometric or 1-flat, but seems full of other possibilities.
We start by the study of the most basic properties of our construction. The
structure is co-calibrated if, and only if, M is an Einstein manifold. The
fibres are always associative. In fact, the associated 3-form results from a
linear combination of three other volume 3-forms, one of which is the volume of
the fibres. We also give new examples of co-calibrated structures on well known
spaces. We hope this contributes both to the knowledge of special geometries
and to the study of 4-manifolds.Comment: 13 page
Magnetotelluric Imaging of the Lithosphere Across the Variscan Orogen (Iberian Autochthonous Domain, NW Iberia)
A new magnetotelluric (MT) survey comprising 17 MT soundings throughout a 30 km long
N30°W transect in the Iberian autochthons domain of NW Iberia (Central Iberian Zone) is presented. The
2-D inversion model shows the resistivity structure of the continental crust up to 10 km depth, heretofore
unavailable for this region of the Variscan Orogen. The MT model reveals a wavy structure separating a
conductive upper layer underlain by a resistive layer, thus picturing the two main tectonic blocks of a
large-scale D2 extensional shear zone (i.e., Pinhel shear zone). The upper layer represents a lower grade
metamorphic domain that includes graphite-rich rocks. The lower layer consists of high-grade metamorphic
rocks that experienced partial melting and are associated with granites (more resistive) emplaced during
crustal thinning. The wavy structure is the result of superimposed crustal shortening responsible for the
development of large-scale D3 folds (e.g., Marofa synform), later deflected and refolded by a D4 strike-slip
shear zone (i.e., Juzbado-Penalva do Castelo shear zone). The later contribution to the final structure of the
crust is marked by the intrusion of postkinematic granitic rocks and the propagation of steeply dipping brittle
fault zones. Our study demonstrates that MT imaging is a powerful tool to understand complex crustal
structures of ancient orogens in order to design future prospecting surveys for mineral deposits of
economic interest
Paraganglioma of Prostatic Origin
Introduction Paragangliomas are usually benign tumors arising from chromaffin cells located outside the adrenal gland. Prostatic paraganglioma is an unusual entity in adult patients, with only 10 cases reported in the medical literature. Case Report A 34-year-old male with a history of chronic prostatitis consulted for perineal pain. On digital rectal examination the prostate was enlarged and firm, without nodules. The PSA level was 0.8 ng/mL and the catecholamines in the urine were elevated. On ultrasound a retrovesical 9 cm mass of undetermined origin measuring was present. A PET-CT scan showed a pelvic lesion measuring 9 cm with moderate increase in glucidic metabolism localized in the area of the prostate. A biopsy of the prostate revealed a neuroendocrine tumor, possibly a prostatic paraganglioma. A body scintigraphy with MIBG I-123 ruled out the presence of metastases or multifocal tumor. A radical prostatectomy with excision of the pelvic mass was performed under adrenergic blockade. One year after surgery the patient is asymptomatic and disease free. Discussion/Conclusions Prostatic paraganglioma is a rare, usually benign tumor, which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of prostate tumors in young males. Its diagnosis is based on the determination of catecholamine in blood and 24-hour urine and in imaging studies principally scintigraphy with MIBG I-123. Diagnostic confirmation is by histopathological study. The treatment consists of radical resection under adrenergic blockade and volume expansion. Given the limited number of cases reported, it is difficult to establish prognostic factors. Malignancy is defined by clinical criteria, and requires life long follow-up

water stress indicators was studied. For this, the characteristics of different plant-based water stress
indicators (stem water potential, sap flow and trunk diameter fluctuations), their sensibility and limitations
for water stress diagnosis purposes was discussed. The ways in which data can be interpreted, and
protocols for irrigation scheduling was also described
Extensions of the matrix Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy from generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction
The matrix version of the -KdV hierarchy has been recently
treated as the reduced system arising in a Drinfeld-Sokolov type Hamiltonian
symmetry reduction applied to a Poisson submanifold in the dual of the Lie
algebra . Here a
series of extensions of this matrix Gelfand-Dickey system is derived by means
of a generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction defined for the Lie algebra
using the natural
embedding for any positive integer. The
hierarchies obtained admit a description in terms of a matrix
pseudo-differential operator comprising an -KdV type positive part and a
non-trivial negative part. This system has been investigated previously in the
case as a constrained KP system. In this paper the previous results are
considerably extended and a systematic study is presented on the basis of the
Drinfeld-Sokolov approach that has the advantage that it leads to local Poisson
brackets and makes clear the conformal (-algebra) structures related to
the KdV type hierarchies. Discrete reductions and modified versions of the
extended -KdV hierarchies are also discussed.Comment: 60 pages, plain TE
