    Are generalist batterers different from generally extra-family violent men? A study among imprisoned male violent offenders

    Research on male batterers has found that in some cases of severe intimate partner violence (IPV) against women, male aggressors were also generally violent beyond the family realm. These findings have been used by researchers to illustrate the common etiology of both general and IPV. Using data from imprisoned male violent offenders, we analyzed the individual, family, and community characteristics of two groups of violent offenders: generalist batterers (GB) and generally extra-family violent men (GEVM). GB offenders had a judicial sentence on IPV-related offenses (gender violence according to the Spanish legislation), while GEVM offenders did not have any IPV-related judicial sentence. The sample includes 153 imprisoned male violent offenders of the Penitentiary Center of Villabona (Asturias, Spain). Sociodemographic measures, and criminal and justice official records of participants are available. Two groups of participants (GB and GEVM) distinction was done based on official records. Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVA) was carried out to study differences between each group of participants in self-reported measures of personal, family, and community context variables. MANCOVA showed no statistical differences among the individual, family, and community characteristics of these two groups, giving empirical support to the theoretical view that general violence and IPV might share a common etiology. These results are discussed in light of the debate about the potentially common etiology of these two types of violence

    Self-avoiding walks and connective constants in small-world networks

    Long-distance characteristics of small-world networks have been studied by means of self-avoiding walks (SAW's). We consider networks generated by rewiring links in one- and two-dimensional regular lattices. The number of SAW's unu_n was obtained from numerical simulations as a function of the number of steps nn on the considered networks. The so-called connective constant, μ=limnun/un1\mu = \lim_{n \to \infty} u_n/u_{n-1}, which characterizes the long-distance behavior of the walks, increases continuously with disorder strength (or rewiring probability, pp). For small pp, one has a linear relation μ=μ0+ap\mu = \mu_0 + a p, μ0\mu_0 and aa being constants dependent on the underlying lattice. Close to p=1p = 1 one finds the behavior expected for random graphs. An analytical approach is given to account for the results derived from numerical simulations. Both methods yield results agreeing with each other for small pp, and differ for pp close to 1, because of the different connectivity distributions resulting in both cases.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Insights on the health benefits of the bioactive compounds of coffee silverskin extract

    The bioaccessibility of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and caffeine in coffee silverskin extracts (CSE) and the contribution of these substances to the prophylactic effect of CSE on the pathogenesis of diabetes have not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the bioaccessibility, bioavailability and bioactivity of CGA and caffeine alone and in CSE in the pancreas of rats treated with streptozotocin-nicotinamide (type 2 diabetes model). Metabolism of CGA and caffeine started in the gastrointestinal tract due to changes of pH taking place during digestion. Their metabolites protected pancreatic cells against the risk of diabetes. This is the first in vivo study to demonstrate a specific chemo-protective effect of CSE in pancreatic tissue, and this effect may be associated with its antioxidant capacity. Daily administration of CSE, CGA or caffeine 35 d previous to the induction of diabetes significantly reduced (p < 0.05) pancreatic oxidative stress and protein damage.This work was supported by grants from SUSCOFFEE (AGL2014-57239-R) and SAMID (RD12/0026).     Reliability of the resonance frequency analysis values in new prototype transepithelial abutments: A prospective clinical study

    Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) requires abutment disconnection to monitor implant stability. To overcome this limitation, an experimental transepithelial abutment was designed to allow a SmartPeg to be screwed onto it, in order to determine the prototype abutments repeatability and reproducibility using Osstell ISQ and to assess whether implant length and diameter have an influence on the reliability of these measurements. RFA was conducted with a SmartPeg screwed directly into the implant and onto experimental abutments of different heights of 2, 3.5 and 5 mm. A total of 32 patients (116 implants) were tested. RFA measurements were taken twice for each group from mesial, distal, buccal and palatal/lingual surfaces. Mean values and SD were calculated and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) (p < 0.05, IC 95%). The implant stability quotient (ISQ) mean values were 72.581 measured directly to implant and 72.899 (2 mm), 72.391 (3.5 mm) and 71.458 (5 mm) measured from the prototypes. ICC between measurements made directly to implant and through 2-, 3.5-and 5-mm abutments were 0.908, 0.919 and 0.939, respectively. RFA values registered through the experimental transepithelial abutments achieved a high reliability. Neither the implant length nor the diameter had any influence on the measurements’ reliability
