This Master's Thesis, of a theoretical-practical nature, aims to develop an analysis of the narrative strategies of contemporary comics, focusing on the study of story containers as an avant-garde phenomenon. It has been studied, based on the work of different artists, how these graphic innovations can condition the structure of the narrative and the traditional reading vector. Through this analysis, it has been studied how different authors have used resources such as path-drawing and multilinear narration to solve the difficulties that arise with story containers. The results obtained during the first part of the work have allowed the elaboration of our own story container. We have made a life-size drawing of the beheaded Marie Antoinette, using her dress and the blood on her neck as a container to draw the development of the French Revolution. To finish, we have made a small instruction manual with the necessary indications for reading the drawing and additional information about the Revolution

The purpose of this paper is to study the dynamic characteristics of a double curvature arch dam (La Tajera arch dam) for a Finite Element Model Updating. To achieve it, high sensitivity accelerometers synchronized wirelessly have been used. The system modal dampings, natural frequencies mode shapes are identified using output only identification techniques under environmental loads (wind, vehicles). Firstly, a finite element model of the dam-reservoir-foundation system was created. Once the dynamic properties of the structure were numerically obtained, a testing plan was then carried out identifying the most significant test points. After the measurements were carried out, an Operational Modal Analysis was performed to obtain experimentally the structure dynamic properties: natural frequencies, modal dampings and mode shapes. experimentally and to assess its reach. Then, the finite element model updating of the initial model was carried out to match the recorded dynamic behavior. The updated model may be used within a structural health monitoring and damage detection system or, as it is proposed on this thesis, for the analysis of the seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation coupled system

Fusion Plasma simulation in the Interactive Grid

    Get PDF
Within the framework of the int.eu.grid project, IVISDEP, which stands for Interactive Visualizer of an Integrator of Stochastic Differential Equations for Plasmas, has been successfully ported and executed. It is an example of integration of many of the innovative features that this grid infrastructure offers. The application itself simulates and visualizes the evolution of the plasma inside a stellarator fusion device. The followed approach implies the simulation of a great number of trajectories of particles, whose positions are calculated among a large number of nodes in the Grid. The graphical interface allows the user to see and modify the physical and computational parameters of the simulation interactively, making this application a valuable tool for researchers in plasma physics

For a long time, Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) were not considered a component in the etiology of dementia. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders introduced substance-induced neurocognitive disorders, incorporating this notion to clinical practice. However, detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative processes in SUD patients remain a major clinical challenge, especially when early diagnosis is required. In the present study, we aimed to investigate new potential biomarkers of neurodegeneration that could predict cognitive impairment in SUD patients: the circulating concentrations of Neurofilament Light chain protein (NfL) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Sixty SUD patients were compared with twenty-seven dementia patients and forty healthy controls. SUD patients were recruited and assessed using the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental (PRISM) and a battery of neuropsychological tests, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test for evaluation of cognitive impairment. When compared to healthy control subjects, SUD patients showed increases in plasma NfL concentrations and NfL/BDNF ratio, as well as reduced plasma BDNF levels. These changes were remarkable in SUD patients with moderate–severe cognitive impairment, being comparable to those observed in dementia patients. NfL concentrations correlated with executive function and memory cognition in SUD patients. The parameters “age”, “NfL/BDNF ratio”, “first time alcohol use”, “age of onset of alcohol use disorder”, and “length of alcohol use disorder diagnosis” were able to stratify our SUD sample into patients with cognitive impairment from those without cognitive dysfunction with great specificity and sensibility. In conclusion, we propose the combined use of NfL and BDNF (NfL/BDNF ratio) to monitor substance-induced neurocognitive disorder.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII], Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and European Regional Development Funds-European Union (ERDF-EU] grants “Proyectos de Investigación en Salud” PI19/01577, PI19/00886, PI20/01399 and PI22/00427; Grants Programa RICORS RIAPAD (Red de Investigación en Atención Primaria en Adicciones), Programa RETICS Red de Trastornos Adictivos, (RD16/0017/000); Ministerio de Sanidad, Delegación de Gobierno para el Plan Nacional sobre Drogas (PND 2022I020, PND2020/048, PND 2019/040]; Consejería de Salud y Familia, Junta de Andalucía (Neuro-RECA, RIC-0111-2019]. Cardiovascular disease risk assessment on the basis of the main ocular hemodynamic variables

    Get PDF
Introduction and objectives: To examine the association of ocular hemodynamic variables with cardiovascular disease and to assess the risk of suffering it based on the degree of affectation of these variables. Methods: This is a case-control study, comprised of 23 cardiovascular disease cases and 39 controls. Ocular hemodynamic variables were obtained for both groups by color doppler ultrasound. Statistics: Student t-test for the comparison of means and odds ratio for risk assessment. Results: Cardiovascular disease was statistically significantly associated with the ophthalmic artery resistance index (p=0.01). In this way, subjects over 55 years old with ophthalmic artery resistance index values equal or higher than 0.8, present 4.08 times increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease than subjects with values minor that 0.8 with a 95% confidence interval (1.35-12.30). Conclusions: Our study suggests that ophthalmic artery resistance index determination is a non-invasive procedure, safe and reproducible for evaluating cardiovascular disease risk

Structural and Dynamical Patterns on Online Social Networks: the Spanish May 15th Movement as a case study

The number of people using online social networks in their everyday life is continuously growing at a pace never saw before. This new kind of communication has an enormous impact on opinions, cultural trends, information spreading and even in the commercial success of new products. More importantly, social online networks have revealed as a fundamental organizing mechanism in recent country-wide social movements. In this paper, we provide a quantitative analysis of the structural and dynamical patterns emerging from the activity of an online social network around the ongoing May 15th (15M) movement in Spain. Our network is made up by users that exchanged tweets in a time period of one month, which includes the birth and stabilization of the 15M movement. We characterize in depth the growth of such dynamical network and find that it is scale-free with communities at the mesoscale. We also find that its dynamics exhibits typical features of critical systems such as robustness and power-law distributions for several quantities. Remarkably, we report that the patterns characterizing the spreading dynamics are asymmetric, giving rise to a clear distinction between information sources and sinks. Our study represent a first step towards the use of data from online social media to comprehend modern societal dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
