    Sparse Voltage Measurement-Based Fault Location Using Intelligent Electronic Devices

    This paper proposes a fault-section location method based on sparse measurements, aimed at asymmetrical faults. A virtual current vector is defined to indicate the faulted section, which is sufficiently sparse except that the fault position corresponding entries are nonzero. To simplify the algorithm, the virtual vector is fixed by amplitudes of voltages and impedances and the feasibility is demonstrated. The Bayesian Compressive Sensing theory is introduced to reduce the number of required intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). In addition, the minimal number of IEDs and their allocation are discussed. The performance of the proposed method is validated in a 69-bus, 12.66 kV distribution system with six distributed generations (DGs) in response to various fault scenarios. The simulation results show that the method is robust for single-phase, double-phase, and double-phase to ground faults with high resistance under noisy condition. Furthermore, the method is applicable for networks with inverter interfaced DGs

    Transient high-frequency impedance comparison-based protection for flexible DC distribution systems

    Flexible direct current (DC) distribution systems have emerged as the development trend for future distribution grids. However, these systems are vulnerable to DC faults, rapid fault identification and faulted line selection method are required to enhance the security of the entire system. A novel transient high frequency impedance comparison based DC protection for flexible DC distribution systems is proposed in this paper. The control independent high frequency impedance model of power converter is also investigated. Based on this model, the proposed method identified the faulted lines by comparing high frequency impedance measurement differences. For DC bus with multiple branches, this technique minimizes the threshold calculation job, which is usually difficult to process for the transient value based protections. Strict synchronization of data is also not required for this method. The simulation model of four-terminal flexible DC distribution networks is built in PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the effectiveness of the proposed protection model. Simulation results prove that the protection is robust to fault transition resistances and the measurement noise

    The complexity of the eukaryotic protein synthesis machinery is partly driven by extensive and diverse modifications to associated proteins and RNAs. These modifications can have important roles in regulating translation factor activity and ribosome biogenesis and function. Further investigation of ‘translational modifications’ is warranted considering the growing evidence implicating protein synthesis as a critical point of gene expression control that is commonly deregulated in disease. New evidence suggests that translation is a major new target for oxidative modifications, specifically hydroxylations and demethylations, which generally are catalyzed by a family of emerging oxygenase enzymes that act at the interface of nutrient availability and metabolism. This review summarizes what is currently known about the role or these enzymes in targeting rRNA synthesis, protein translation and associated cellular processes

    How does state marijuana policy affect US youth? Medical marijuana laws, marijuana use and perceived harmfulness: 1991–2014

    AimsTo test, among US students: (1) whether perceived harmfulness of marijuana has changed over time, (2) whether perceived harmfulness of marijuana changed post‐passage of state medical marijuana laws (MML) compared with pre‐passage; and (3) whether perceived harmfulness of marijuana statistically mediates and/or modifies the relation between MML and marijuana use as a function of grade level.DesignCross‐sectional nationally representative surveys of US students, conducted annually, 1991–2014, in the Monitoring the Future study.SettingSurveys conducted in schools in all coterminous states; 21 states passed MML between 1996 and 2014.ParticipantsThe sample included 1 134 734 adolescents in 8th, 10th and 12th grades.MeasurementsState passage of MML; perceived harmfulness of marijuana use (perceiving great or moderate risk to health from smoking marijuana occasionally versus slight or no risk); and marijuana use (prior 30 days). Data were analyzed using time‐varying multi‐level regression modeling.FindingsThe perceived harmfulness of marijuana has decreased significantly since 1991 (from an estimated 84.0% in 1991 to 53.8% in 2014, P < 0.01) and, across time, perceived harmfulness was lower in states that passed MML [odds ratio (OR) = 0.86, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.75–0.97]. In states with MML, perceived harmfulness of marijuana increased among 8th graders after MML passage (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.08–1.36), while marijuana use decreased (OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.72–0.92). Results were null for other grades, and for all grades combined. Increases in perceived harmfulness among 8th graders after MML passage was associated with ~33% of the decrease in use. When adolescents were stratified by perceived harmfulness, use in 8th graders decreased to a greater extent among those who perceived marijuana as harmful.ConclusionsWhile perceived harmfulness of marijuana use appears to be decreasing nationally among adolescents in the United States, the passage of medical marijuana laws (MML) is associated with increases in perceived harmfulness among young adolescents and marijuana use has decreased among those who perceive marijuana to be harmful after passage of MML.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134418/1/add13523_am.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134418/2/add13523.pd

    Prevalence of marijuana use does not differentially increase among youth after states pass medical marijuana laws: Commentary on Stolzenberg et al. (2015) and reanalysis of US National Survey on Drug Use in Households data 2002–2011

    There is considerable interest in the effects of medical marijuana laws (MML) on marijuana use in the USA, particularly among youth. The article by Stolzenberg et al. (2015) “The effect of medical cannabis laws on juvenile cannabis use” concludes that “implementation of medical cannabis laws increase juvenile cannabis use”. This result is opposite to the findings of other studies that analysed the same US National Survey on Drug Use in Households data as well as opposite to studies analysing other national data which show no increase or even a decrease in youth marijuana use after the passage of MML. We provide a replication of the Stolzenberg et al. results and demonstrate how the comparison they are making is actually driven by differences between states with and without MML rather than being driven by pre and post-MML changes within states. We show that Stolzenberg et al. do not properly control for the fact that states that pass MML during 2002–2011 tend to already have higher past-month marijuana use before passing the MML in the first place. We further show that when within-state changes are properly considered and pre-MML prevalence is properly controlled, there is no evidence of a differential increase in past-month marijuana use in youth that can be attributed to state MML

    We discuss theoretically the geometric and electronic structure properties of the thiazolidinedione derivative A and its hydrogen-bonded complex in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution in the S0 and S1 states. To gain insight into the photoinduced coupled excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) associated with intermolecular hydrogen bonding, the potential energy profiles are provided along the Osingle bondH bond and the twisted angle. It is predicted that TICT in S1 can facilitate ESPT initiated by intermolecular hydrogen-bond strengthening in the S1 state. The coupling of ESPT and TICT is energetically preferable

    Five Cases Report of Solid Tumor Synchronously with Hematologic Malignancy

    The reported incidence of synchronous multiple primary cancer (SMPC) is rare, and it is even less common to observe synchronous solid tumor with a hematological malignancy. We report five cases of solid tumor presented synchronously with hematological malignancy, all observed within a 2 year period at the oncology department of a university hospital in Shanghai, China. These individual cases included lung adenocarcinoma with chronic myelogenous leukemia, colon cancer with solitary plasmocytoma, gastric adenocarcinoma with diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, lung adenocarcinoma with multiple myeloma, and colon cancer with diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is challenging to therapeutically control the biological behavior of concurrent multiple primary tumors, and there is no standard treatment for such rare conditions.
