Development of Simulators for Electrochemical Responses: Experimental and Pedagogical Applications
The work carried out in this CRADA addressed the development of computational algorithms to simulate the response for commonly used electrochemical techniques. The goal was the incorporation of these algorithms into DigiSimR, a generalized simulator for cyclic voltammetry (CV). CV, a ubiquitously applied electroanalytical technique used by nonelectrochemists as well as electrochemists, is sometimes referred to as "electrochemical spectroscopy". The latest version, DigiSimR 2.1, is now being sold by the industrial partner, Bioanalytical Systems, Inc. The response of the electrochemical community to this latest program (as well as its predecessors, DigiSimR 2.0 and the DOS version; versions 2.0 and 2.1 are for Windows), has been uniformly positive and numerous publications are now appearing which feature its application
BRS Cainguá, a blackberry fresh-market cultivar.
Uma das razões para a baixa demanda de amoras do mercado no Brasil é o sabor ácido da fruta fresca. Os frutos da cultivar BRS Cainguá, recém-lançada, têm um sabor melhor e uma forma muito atraente
'BRS Mandinho': the first platycarpa peach cultivar released in Brazil.

Sleep hygiene impacts on episodic memories in young and older adults during quarantine by Covid-19: preliminary results
Sleep benefits off-line memory consolidation. Due to quarantine by Covid-19, sleep routines and sleep quality were affected. Preliminary results from our Lab showed that episodic memory formation is impaired by emotional variables, such as anxiety and depression. We hypothesize that sleep hygiene during quarantine positively impacts memory processes and emotional variables. To test this, we perform a 21-day study. Young and older participants were trained on the episodic memory task (video of neutral content). On day 7 they were tested and half of them began a sleep hygiene program. On day 14, participants were trained in a new episodic task and were tested on day 21. We found that young and older adults that received the sleep hygiene treatment had a positive impact on memory performance. Furthermore, older adults had better performance in memory recognition than young adults independently of the hygiene treatment. Moreover, older adults that received the sleep hygiene treatment showed a positive correlation between the total amount of sleep hygiene activities and the amount of correct recognition as well as a negative correlation with false recognition. We did not found a significant effect on emotional variables. These results demonstrate that sleep hygiene can be an effective tool for young and older adults to improve memory, however one-week treatment is not enough to induce emotional improvements.Fil: Tassone, Leonela Magali. Planktonic foraminifera, sea surface temperatures, and mechanisms of oceanic change in the Peru and south equatorial currents, 0–150 ka BP
Planktonic foraminiferal faunas of the southeast Pacific indicate that sea surface temperatures (SST) have
varied by as much as 8–10°C in the Peru Current, and by ~5–7°C along the equator, over the past 150,000 years.
Changes in SST at times such as the Last Glacial Maximum reflect incursion of high-latitude species Globorotalia
inflata and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma into the eastern boundary current and as far north as the equator. A
simple heat budget model of the equatorial Pacific shows that observed changes in Peru Current advection can
account for about half of the total variability in equatorial SSTs. The remaining changes in equatorial SST, which
are likely related to local changes in upwelling or pycnocline depth, precede changes in polar climates as recorded
by δ¹⁸O. This partitioning of processes in eastern equatorial Pacific SST reveals that net ice-age cooling here
reflects first a rapid response of equatorial upwelling to insolation, followed by a later response to changes in the
eastern boundary current associated with high-latitude climate (which closely resembles variations in atmospheric
CO₂ as recorded in the Vostok ice core). Although precise mechanisms responsible for the equatorial upwelling
component of climate change remain uncertain, one likely candidate that may operate independently of the ice
sheets is insolation-driven changes in El Nin˜o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) frequency. Early responses of
equatorial SST detected both here and elsewhere highlight the sensitivity of tropical systems to small changes in
seasonal insolation. The scale of tropical changes we have observed are substantially greater than model
predictions, suggesting a need for further quantitative assessment of processes associated with long-term climate
change. Keywords: paleoceanography, eastern boundary current, sea surface temperature, Pacific Ocean, foraminiferaKeywords: paleoceanography, eastern boundary current, sea surface temperature, Pacific Ocean, foraminifer
Instability and `Sausage-String' Appearance in Blood Vessels during High Blood Pressure
A new Rayleigh-type instability is proposed to explain the `sausage-string'
pattern of alternating constrictions and dilatations formed in blood vessels
under influence of a vasoconstricting agent. Our theory involves the nonlinear
elasticity characteristics of the vessel wall, and provides predictions for the
conditions under which the cylindrical form of a blood vessel becomes unstable.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures submitted to Physical Review Letter
The influence of poly (2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) on the electrochemical and photochemical properties of a highly luminescent ruthenium complex
Immobilisation of a luminescent material on an electrode surface is well known to substantially modulate its photophysical and electrochemical properties. Here a positively charged ruthenium metal complex ([Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)) is immobilised on all electrode surface by ion paring with a sulfonated conducting polymer poly(2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid), (PMAS). Significantly, our study reveals that the electron transport between the ruthenium metal centres can be greatly enhanced due to the interaction with the conducting polymer when both are surface confined. Charge transfer diffusion rates in the present system are an order of magnitude faster than those found where the metal centre is immobilised within a non-conducting polymeric matrix. Electron transport appears to be mediated through the PMAS conjugated structure, contrasting with the electron hopping process typically observed in non-conducting metallopolymers. This increased regeneration rate causes the ruthenium-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) efficiency to be increased. The impact of these observations on the ECL detection of low concentrations of disease biomarkers is discussed. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd
The Moss Macromitrium Richardii (Orthotrichaceae) with Sporophyte and Calyptra Enclosed in Hymenaea Resin from the Dominican Republic
Abstract Dominican amber is an important source for Early Miocene bryophytes. We report the moss Macromitrium richardii Schwägr., an extant representative of the Orthotrichaceae, from the Dominican amber collection of the American Museum of Natural History. This species is currently a widespread Neotropical epiphyte. The specimen includes several gametophytes and sporophytes, and represents the first fossil record of Orthotrichaceae. Alongside the Macromitrium shoots we observed several fragments of the liverworts Cheilolejeunea antiqua and Frullania sp. The unusual thermal behavior of the resin sample initially led to doubts about the Miocene age of the specimen, but chemical analyses of the Hymenaea resin provides evidence that the specimen represents a highly oxidized sample of Miocene Dominican amber rather than an artificially thermally-treated subfossil resin (copal). Our inclusion demonstrates the exceptional preservation potential of tree resin, but our observations also suggest that provenance (including any possibility that a modern resin has been thermally treated to make it appear older) should be scrutinized when single pieces with atypical thermal behavior and exceptionally well-preserved extant morphotypes come to light
