Spin-dependent charge recombination along para-phenylene molecular wires
We have used an efficient new quantum mechanical method for radical pair
recombination reactions to study the spin-dependent charge recombination along
PTZ--Ph--PDI molecular wires. By comparing our
results to the experimental data of E. Weiss {\em et al.} [J. Am. Chem. Soc.
{\bf 126}, 5577 (2004)], we are able to extract the spin-dependent (singlet and
triplet) charge recombination rate constants for wires with . These
spin-dependent rate constants have not been extracted previously from the
experimental data because they require fitting its magnetic field-dependence to
the results of quantum spin dynamics simulations. We find that the triplet
recombination rate constant decreases exponentially with the length of the
wire, consistent with the superexchange mechanism of charge recombination.
However, the singlet recombination rate constant is nearly independent of the
length of the wire, suggesting that the singlet pathway is dominated by an
incoherent hopping mechanism. A simple qualitative explanation for the
different behaviours of the two spin-selective charge recombination pathways is
provided in terms of Marcus theory. We also find evidence for a magnetic
field-independent background contribution to the triplet yield of the charge
recombination reaction, and suggest several possible explanations for it. Since
none of these explanations is especially compelling given the available
experimental evidence, and since the result appears to apply more generally to
other molecular wires, we hope that this aspect of our study will stimulate
further experimental work.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

Polarization Diffusion from Spacetime Uncertainty
A model of Lorentz invariant random fluctuations in photon polarization is
presented. The effects are frequency dependent and affect the polarization of
photons as they propagate through space. We test for this effect by confronting
the model with the latest measurements of polarization of Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) photons.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Fluorescent visualization of a spreading surfactant
The spreading of surfactants on thin films is an industrially and medically
important phenomenon, but the dynamics are highly nonlinear and visualization
of the surfactant dynamics has been a long-standing experimental challenge. We
perform the first quantitative, spatiotemporally-resolved measurements of the
spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin fluid layer. During the
spreading process, we directly observe both the radial height profile of the
spreading droplet and the spatial distribution of the fluorescently-tagged
surfactant. We find that the leading edge of spreading circular layer of
surfactant forms a Marangoni ridge in the underlying fluid, with a trough
trailing the ridge as expected. However, several novel features are observed
using the fluorescence technique, including a peak in the surfactant
concentration which trails the leading edge, and a flat, monolayer-scale
spreading film which differs from concentration profiles predicted by current
models. Both the Marangoni ridge and surfactant leading edge can be described
to spread as . We find spreading exponents, and for the ridge peak and
surfactant leading edge, respectively, which are in good agreement with
theoretical predictions of . In addition, we observe that the
surfactant leading edge initially leads the peak of the Marangoni ridge, with
the peak later catching up to the leading edge
Integrating TV/digital data spectrograph system
A 25-mm vidicon camera was previously modified to allow operation in an integration mode for low-light-level astronomical work. The camera was then mated to a low-dispersion spectrograph for obtaining spectral information in the 400 to 750 nm range. A high speed digital video image system was utilized to digitize the analog video signal, place the information directly into computer-type memory, and record data on digital magnetic tape for permanent storage and subsequent analysis
Kabbage: A Fresh Approach to Understanding Fundamental Auditing Concepts and the Effects of Disruptive Technology
Disruptive technology, new business ventures, and increased availability of data are quickly changing traditional financial reporting and assurance processes. As a result, prospective auditors not only need to understand fundamental auditing concepts, but also need to anticipate the influence that disruptive technology will have on the profession. The following case study provides a lens through which prospective auditors can view the coming changes to the profession by asking them to consider how the online lending company, Kabbage, is currently disrupting the lending industry for non-traditional and small businesses. Students contemplate several fundamental auditing concepts such as audit evidence, financial statement assertions, and analytical procedures while also acquiring insight into the effects that new and disruptive technology will have on the profession. The intention is to encourage students to embrace coming changes and become lifetime learners

Modulation of hexokinase association with mitochondria analyzed with quantitative three-dimensional confocal microscopy
Hexokinase isozyme I is proposed to be associated with mitochondria in vivo. Moreover, it has been suggested that this association is modulated in coordination with changes in cell metabolic state. To test these hypotheses, we analyzed the subcellular distribution of hexokinase relative to mitochondria in paraformaldehyde-fixed astrocytes using immunocytochemistry and quantitative three-dimensional confocal microscopy. Analysis of the extent of colocalization between hexokinase and mitochondria revealed that approximately 70% of cellular hexokinase is associated with mitochondria under basal metabolic conditions. In contrast to the immunocytochemical studies, between 15 to 40% of cellular hexokinase was found to be associated with mitochondria after fractionation of astrocyte cultures depending on the exact fractionation conditions. The discrepancy between fractionation studies and those based on imaging of distributions in fixed cells indicates the usefulness of using techniques that can evaluate the distributions of cytosolic enzymes in cells whose subcellular ultrastructure is not severely disrupted. To determine if hexokinase distribution is modulated in concert with changes in cell metabolism, the localization of hexokinase with mitochondria was evaluated after inhibition of glucose metabolism with 2-deoxyglucose. After incubation with 2-deoxyglucose there was an approximate 35% decrease in the amount of hexokinase associated with mitochondria. These findings support the hypothesis that hexokinase is bound to mitochondria in rat brain astrocytes in vivo, and that this association is sensitive to cell metabolic state
