Robust nanopatterning by laser-induced dewetting of metal nanofilms
We have observed nanopattern formation with robust and controllable spatial
ordering by laser-induced dewetting in nanoscopic metal films. Pattern
evolution in Co film of thickness 1\leq h\leq8 nm on SiO_{2} was achieved under
multiple pulse irradiation using a 9 ns pulse laser. Dewetting leads to the
formation of cellular patterns which evolve into polygons that eventually break
up into nanoparticles with monomodal size distribution and short range ordering
in nearest-neighbour spacing R. Spatial ordering was attributed to a
hydrodynamic thin film instability and resulted in a predictable variation of R
and particle diameter D with h. The length scales R and D were found to be
independent of the laser energy. These results suggest that spatially ordered
metal nanoparticles can be robustly assembled by laser-induced dewetting
Thickness-dependent spontaneous dewetting morphology of ultrathin Ag films
We show here that the morphological pathway of spontaneous dewetting of
ultrathin Ag films on SiO2 under nanosecond laser melting is found to be film
thickness dependent. For films with thickness h between 2 <= h <= 9.5 nm, the
morphology during the intermediate stages of dewetting consisted of
bicontinuous structures. For films 11.5 <= h <= 20 nm, the intermediate stages
consisted of regularly-sized holes. Measurement of the characteristic length
scales for different stages of dewetting as a function of film thickness showed
a systematic increase, which is consistent with the spinodal dewetting
instability over the entire thickness range investigated. This change in
morphology with thickness is consistent with observations made previously for
polymer films [A. Sharma et al, Phys. Rev. Lett., v81, pp3463 (1998); R.
Seemann et al, J. Phys. Cond. Matt., v13, pp4925, (2001)]. Based on the
behavior of free energy curvature that incorporates intermolecular forces, we
have estimated the morphological transition thickness for the intermolecular
forces for Ag on SiO2 . The theory predictions agree well with observations for
Ag. These results show that it is possible to form a variety of complex Ag
nanomorphologies in a consistent manner, which could be useful in optical
applications of Ag surfaces, such as in surface enhanced Raman sensing.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Investigation of pulsed laser induced dewetting in nanoscopic metal films
Hydrodynamic pattern formation (PF) and dewetting resulting from pulsed laser
induced melting of nanoscopic metal films have been used to create spatially
ordered metal nanoparticle arrays with monomodal size distribution on
SiO_{\text{2}}/Si substrates. PF was investigated for film thickness h\leq7 nm
< laser absorption depth \sim11 nm and different sets of laser parameters,
including energy density E and the irradiation time, as measured by the number
of pulses n. PF was only observed to occur for E\geq E_{m}, where E_{m} denotes
the h-dependent threshold energy required to melt the film. Even at such small
length scales, theoretical predictions for E_{m} obtained from a
continuum-level lumped parameter heat transfer model for the film temperature,
coupled with the 1-D transient heat equation for the substrate phase, were
consistent with experimental observations provided that the thickness
dependence of the reflectivity of the metal-substrate bilayer was incorporated
into the analysis. The spacing between the nanoparticles and the particle
diameter were found to increase as h^{2} and h^{5/3} respectively, which is
consistent with the predictions of the thin film hydrodynamic (TFH) dewetting
theory. These results suggest that fast thermal processing can lead to novel
pattern formation, including quenching of a wide range of length scales and

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids preserve retinal function in type 2 diabetic mice
Objective: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is associated with hyperglycemia-driven microvascular pathology and neuronal compromise in the retina. However, DR is also linked to dyslipidemia. As omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are protective in proliferative retinopathy, we investigated the capacity of ω-3PUFAs to preserve retinal function in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Design: Male leptin-receptor-deficient (db/db) mice were maintained for 22 weeks (4 weeks–26 weeks of life) on calorically and compositionally matched diets, except for 2% enrichment in either ω-3 or ω-6PUFAs. Visual function was assessed at 9, 14 and 26 weeks by electroretinography. Retinal capillary and neuronal integrity, as well as glucose challenge responses, were assessed on each diet. Results: The ω-3PUFA diet significantly preserved retinal function in the mouse model of T2DM to levels similar to those observed in nondiabetic control mice on normal chow. Conversely, retinal function gradually deteriorated in db/db mice on a ω-6PUFA-rich diet. There was also an enhanced ability of ω-3PUFA-fed mice to respond to glucose challenge. The protection of visual function appeared to be independent of cytoprotective or anti-inflammatory effects of ω-3PUFAs. Conclusion: This study identifies beneficial effects of dietary ω-3PUFAs on visual function in T2DM. The data are consistent with dyslipidemia negatively impacting retinal function. As ω-3PUFA lipid dietary interventions are readily available, safe and inexpensive, increasing ω-3PUFA intake in diabetic patients may slow the progression of vision loss in T2DM
Making the cut: The production of 'self-harm' in post-1945 Anglo-Saxon psychiatry.
'Deliberate self-harm', 'self-mutilation' and 'self-injury' are just some of the terms used to describe one of the most prominent issues in British mental health policy in recent years. This article demonstrates that contemporary literature on 'self-harm' produces this phenomenon (to varying extents) around two key characteristics. First, this behaviour is predominantly performed by those identified as female. Second, this behaviour primarily involves cutting the skin. These constitutive characteristics are traced back to a corpus of literature produced in the 1960s and 1970s in North American psychiatric inpatient institutions; analysis shows how pre-1960 works were substantially different. Finally, these gendered and behavioural assertions are shown to be the result of historically specific processes of exclusion and emphasis
Non-suicidal self-injury (Nssi) in adolescent inpatients: assessing personality features and attitude toward death
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common concern among hospitalized adolescents, and can have significant implications for short and long-term prognosis. Little research has been devoted on how personality features in severely ill adolescents interact with NSSI and "attitude toward life and death" as a dimension of suicidality. Developing more specific assessment methodologies for adolescents who engage in self-harm without suicidal intent is relevant given the recent proposal of a non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) disorder and may be useful in predicting risk in psychiatrically impaired subjects.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Consecutively hospitalized adolescents in a psychiatric unit (N = 52; 71% females; age 12-19 years), reporting at least one recent episode of self-harm according to the <it>Deliberate Self-harm Inventory</it>, were administered the <it>Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Mental Disorders and Personality Disorders (SCID I and II)</it>, the <it>Children's Depression Inventory </it>and the <it>Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency Scale (MAST)</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean age onset of NSSI in the sample was 12.3 years. All patients showed "repetitive" NSSI (high frequency of self-harm), covering different modalities. Results revealed that 63.5% of adolescents met criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and that the rest of the sample also met criteria for personality disorders with dysregulated traits. History of suicide attempts was present in 46.1% of cases. Elevated depressive traits were found in 53.8%. Results show a statistically significant negative correlation between the score on the "Attraction to Life" subscale of the MAST and the <it>frequency </it>and <it>diversification </it>of self-harming behaviors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Most adolescent inpatients with NSSI met criteria for emotionally dysregulated personality disorders, and showed a reduced "attraction to life" disposition and significant depressive symptoms. This peculiar psychopathological configuration must be addressed in the treatment of adolescent inpatients engaging in NSSI and taken into account for the prevention of suicidal behavior in self-injuring adolescents who do not exhibit an explicit intent to die.</p
Self-harming behaviors in prison: a comparison of suicidal processes, self-injurious behaviors, and mixed events
Self-harming behaviors occurring in prison disproportionately consume resources and cause considerable disruption. To date, theoretical paradigms have explained self-injurious behaviors and suicidal processes either via a continuum or dichotomy of self-harm. This current study examines all documented acts of self-harm (n=1,158) occurring in South Carolina's 28 prisons over a 50 month period. We test and find support for a tripartite schema of self-harm; differentiated with regard to suicidal processes, self-injurious behaviors, and a 'mixed group' of self-harming behaviors. These groups of behaviors were distinct with regard to situational variables (i.e. body part targeted, injury severity) as well as institutional responses (i.e., medical treatment needed, employment of suicide protocols). Findings indicate that self-injurious behaviors are likely to result in physical injury and/or hospitalizations
