Implementation of XpertMalTyph: An Expert System for Medical Diagnosis of the Complications of Malaria and Typhoid

    Get PDF
The dearth of medical experts in the developing world has subjected a large percentage of its populace to preventable ailments and deaths. Also, because of the predominant rural communities, the few medical experts that are available always opt for practice in the few urban cities. This consequently puts the rural communities at a disadvantage with respect to access to quality health care services. In this work, we designed and implemented XpertMalTyph; a novel medical diagnostic expert system for the various kinds of malaria and typhoid complications. A medical diagnostic expert system uses computer(s) to simulate medical doctor skills in diagnosis of ailments and prescription of treatments, hence can be used to provide the same service in the absence of the experts. XpertMalTyph is based on JESS (Java Expert System Shell) programming because of its robust inference engine and rules for implementing expert system

PQ TREES, CONSECUTIVE ONES PROBLEM AND APPLICATIONS

    Get PDF
A PQ tree is an advanced tree–based data structure, which represents a family of permutations on a set of elements. In this research article, we considered the significance of PQ trees and the Consecutive ones Problem to Computer Science and bioinformatics and their various applications. We also went further to demonstrate the operations of the characteristics of the Consecutive ones property by simulation, using high level programming languages. Attempt was also made at developing a PQ tree–Consecutive Ones analyzer, which could be instrumental not only as an educative tool to inquisitive students, but also serve as an important tool in developing clustering software in the field of bioinformatics and other application domains, with respect to solving real life problems

National Hospital Management Portal (NHMP): a framework for e-health implementation

    Get PDF
Health information represents the main basis for health decisionmaking process and there have been some efforts to increase access to health information in developing countries. However, most of these efforts are based on the internet which has minimal penetration especially in the rural and sub-urban part of developing countries. In this work, a platform for medical record acquisition via the ubiquitous 2.5G/3G wireless communications technologies is presented. The National Hospital Management Portal (NHMP)platform has a central database at each specific country’s national hospita

Design of a Web-base Paper submission and reviewing system (PSRS)

Conference planning, organ1zat1on and administration are very tedious tasks in most cases the conference pm~ramme comm1ttee has to convene several rneetmgs where submitted papers (via ema1ls in most cases) are downloaded. discussed and accepted or rejected for presentation at the conference Thats paper ~;resents the design of a web-based conference paper management system which factl1tates easy and efficient review of technical submiss1ons to conferences. Our proposed system stores authors' Information. abstracts. papers and reviewers comments. The process of assignment of papers to reviewers is done using a set of objective parameters to determine the most swtabie reviewers for each micle. The system a;w collates camera ready accepted papers to generate conference proceeding for the conference This work will reduce the amount of paperwork and the need for severa1 meet1ngs by the programme committee thus making conference organization a pleasure Also the effectiveness of · conference organization and management will be substantially improve

Online Recharge Card Loading: A Test Case for M-banking Implementation

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to move mobile service from information-based to transaction-hasetl This procedure solves a number of problems associated with cell plume recharge such as: network failure, recharge card fraud, and elimination of foreign exchange cost. The system involves toll-free calls to an online hank. The bank checks the status of the account and sends notification to the mobile telecom operator who immediately credits the callers account and notification sent to both the user and the bank for account reconciliation with outright elimination of the Secret PIN card(Locally produced or imported). This system requires 110 special account but the usual current or savings account in any bank mul works on the platform of the existing telephone/Mobile banking technology. This gives more ease and convenience, reduced cost of calls tmd better management of the network as well as encouraging trusted banking culture

Development of a Mobile Airline Reservation System

    Get PDF
Current~v, many people and companies are embracing the mobile air line reservation system. Reservation systems had been implemented in many parts of the world for decades, initially from manual to computerized reservation system. Mobile, airline, bus ticketing and automated reservation systems are effectively increasing in the market. As a result of the fierce competition in the airline sector, organizations within this sector are in the process of developing systems that will improve their services to customers. Consequently, an automated seat reservation system has continued to be an open area of research. The objective of this paper is to develop a mobile airline seat reservation system that will assist the public in gaining an easier and faster way for seat reservation and providing them with more options to book a ticketfor traveling on real time. The system was developed using the Wireless Markup Language (WML) asfrontend, MySQL 4.0 database management system as back-end and PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) as the server-side scripting language. The developed system will assist the airline customers and operators in providing cost-effective system that will make possible bookings and seat reservation on real-time using a mobile phone, irrespective of location of a user

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Over the past few decades, major advances in the field of molecular biology, coupled with advances in genomic technologies, have led to an explosive growth in the biological data generated by the scientific community. The critical need to process and analyze such a deluge of data and turn it into useful knowledge has caused bioinformatics to gain prominence and importance. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area that applies techniques, methodologies, and tools in computer and information science to solve biological problems. In Nigeria, bioinformatics has recently played a vital role in the advancement of biological sciences. As a developing country, the importance of bioinformatics is rapidly gaining acceptance, and bioinformatics groups comprised of biologists, computer scientists, and computer engineers are being constituted at Nigerian universities and research institutes. In this article, we present an overview of bioinformatics education and research in Nigeria. We also discuss professional societies and academic and research institutions that play central roles in advancing the discipline in Nigeria. Finally, we propose strategies that can bolster bioinformatics education and support from policy makers in Nigeria, with potential positive implications for other developing countries. © 2014 Fatumo et al.SAF was supported by H3ABioNet NABDA Node, Abuja, Nigeria with NIH Common Fund Award/NHGRI Grant Number U41HG006941 and Genetic Epidemiology Group at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.Published versio

A Taxonomy of Causality-Based Biological Properties

    Get PDF
We formally characterize a set of causality-based properties of metabolic networks. This set of properties aims at making precise several notions on the production of metabolites, which are familiar in the biologists' terminology. From a theoretical point of view, biochemical reactions are abstractly represented as causal implications and the produced metabolites as causal consequences of the implication representing the corresponding reaction. The fact that a reactant is produced is represented by means of the chain of reactions that have made it exist. Such representation abstracts away from quantities, stoichiometric and thermodynamic parameters and constitutes the basis for the characterization of our properties. Moreover, we propose an effective method for verifying our properties based on an abstract model of system dynamics. This consists of a new abstract semantics for the system seen as a concurrent network and expressed using the Chemical Ground Form calculus. We illustrate an application of this framework to a portion of a real metabolic pathway
