    The Effect of Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy on Trichomonas Tenax and Entamoeba Gingivalis in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis.

    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Trichomonas tenax and Entamoeba gingivalis are commensal protozoa which inhabit the human oral cavity. These parasites are found in patients with poor oral hygiene and might be a reason for progressive periodontal diseases. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nonsurgical periodontal treatment on the frequency of these protozoa in saliva and plaque samples. MATERIALS AND METHOD In this clinical trial, samples of saliva and dental plaque were collected from 46 patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis before and after periodontal therapy. The samples were assessed for the frequency of parasites. RESULTS The frequency of Entamoeba gingivalis was reduced in saliva (p= 0.007) and plaque (p= 0.027) three weeks after the treatment. Likewise, the frequency of Trichomonas tenax reduced in saliva (p= 0.030); however, the decrease was not significant in plaque (p= 0.913). Trichomonas tenax frequency in dental plaque directly related to the severity of periodontitis (r= 0.565, p≤ 0.000). In contrast, the number of Entamoeba gingivalis in both saliva (r= -0.405, p≤ 0.005) and plaque (r= -0.304, p= 0.040) was inversely related with the severity of the periodontal disease. CONCLUSION Nonsurgical periodontal treatment could reduce the number of Trichomonas Tenax and Entamoeba gingivalis in the oral environment of patients with chronic periodontitis

    Altered Pattern of Naive and Memory B cells and B1 Cells in Patients with Chronic Granulomatous Disease

    Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder characterized by a greatly increased susceptibility to severe fungal and bacterial infections caused by defects in NADPH oxidase of phagocytic cells. We aimed to investigate immunophenotype alterations of naive and memory B cells and B1a cells in peripheral whole blood from Iranian patients with CGD. Flow cytometric analysis was performed on peripheral blood samples from 31 CGD patients and 23 healthy controls (HC) to study naive (IgD+/CD27-), memory (CD27+) B and B1a (CD5+) cells. Soluble CD27 (sCD27) and immunoglobulins were also measured by ELISA and the nephelometric method, respectively. We found significantly higher levels of naive B cells and B1a cells but lower levels of memory B cells in CGD patients compared to HC. There was no significant difference in soluble CD27 (sCD27) alteration between CGD patients and HC. Our findings suggested a role for NADPH oxidase in process of B cell differentiation and impairing conversion of naive B cells to memory B cells and altered B1a cells in CGD patients. Increased susceptibility of CGD patients to opportunistic infections and autoimmune disorders could be partly explained by the altered phenotype of B lymphocytes in these patients

    High expression of Talin-1 is associated with tumor progression and recurrence in melanoma skin cancer patients.

    BACKGROUND: Talin-1 as a component of multi-protein adhesion complexes plays a role in tumor formation and migration in various malignancies. This study investigated Talin-1 in protein levels as a potential prognosis biomarker in skin tumors. METHODS: Talin-1 was evaluated in 106 skin cancer (33 melanomas and 73 non-melanomas skin cancer (NMSC)) and 11 normal skin formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples using immunohistochemical technique on tissue microarrays (TMAs). The association between the expression of Talin-1 and clinicopathological parameters, as well as survival outcomes, were assessed. RESULTS: Our findings from data minings through bioinformatics tools indicated dysregulation of Talin-1 in mRNA levels for skin cancer samples. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference in Talin-1 expression in terms of intensity of staining, percentage of positive tumor cells, and H-score in melanoma tissues compared to NMSC (P = 0.001, P \u3c 0.001, and P \u3c 0.001, respectively). Moreover, high cytoplasmic expression of Talin-1 was found to be associated with significantly advanced stages (P = 0.024), lymphovascular invasion (P = 0.023), and recurrence (P = 0.006) in melanoma cancer tissues. Our results on NMSC showed a statistically significant association between high intensity of staining and the poor differentiation (P = 0.044). No significant associations were observed between Talin-1 expression levels and survival outcomes of melanoma and NMSC patients. CONCLUSION: Our observations showed that higher expression of Talin1 in protein level may be significantly associated with more aggressive tumor behavior and advanced disease in patients with skin cancer. However, further studies are required to find the mechanism of action of Talin-1 in skin cancers

    The Association Between Higher Expression of Talin-1 and the Reduced Survival Rate in Ovarian Serous Carcinoma Patients

    Background & Objective: Talin-1 is a constituent of the multiprotein adhesion complexes that play main role in the formation of tumors and migration in different types of malignancies. The present study aimed to assess expression and prognostic significance of the talin-1 protein in ovarian serous carcinoma (OSC) patients. Methods: The expression of talin-1 in mRNA and its protein levels were investigated for ovarian cancer (OC) by using bioinformatics tools, including Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis 2 (GEPIA2), Gene Expression Database of Normal and Tumor Tissue 2 (GENT2), and The University of ALabama at Birmingham CANcer data analysis Portal (UALCAN) databases. Thereafter, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was used to study the expression patterns of the talin-1 protein using 46 paraffin-embedded OSC tissue specimens, 25 benign tumors, and 20 normal tissues, which were assembled in tissue microarrays (TMAs). We also assessed the potential association between the expression of the talin-1 protein, various clinicopathological parameters, and survival outcomes. Results: Our IHC examination for talin-1 was significantly overexpressed in OSC tissues compared to benign tumors and normal tissues. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis has also indicated statistically significant differences in terms of diseasespecific survival (DSS) and progression-free survival (PFS) between the patients with high and low expression levels of talin-1, respectively. Conclusion: The talin-1 protein was overexpressed in OSC tissues, and a high expression level of talin-1 was found to be significantly associated with tumor aggressiveness and poorer DSS or PFS. Therefore, talin-1 may serve as a molecular marker of cancer progression and a novel prognostic biomarker in these patients

    Modulators of choice overload in Google search engine

    Nowadays, analyzing user behavior on search engines is highly regarded. Lots of options in retrieved results in the search engines, makes users to choose. Once the selection is extremely complex, people will think the simplest decision rule, they decided that not to decide and select. Psychologists know this situation the consequence of "choice overload". Bons (2008) believes that choice overload is the ability of process the information by the people to select. In simpler terms, dealing with a lot of information, lead to the negative results. This study has been done with the goal to identify modulators of Google search engine. The present study is a survey and an applied research. Using stratified random non-relativistic sampling, 72 MS and PhD students of faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and Engineering of Ferdowsi University were selected as a sample. The tools used for collecting data were standard questionnaire (maximizing scale by Schwartz et al 2002) and HCI browser. The results showed that regardless of the personality types (maximizer and satisfier) and only by regarding of the type of search, you cannot say a definitive statement about choice overload theory. Considering two variables of personality and search type, a significant difference between satisfaction of two types personality from the number of retrieved results were observed.This means that maximizers are, in both special and general search, more satisfied from small results than large results (choice overload). But satisfiers, in special search, the number of retrieved results had no effect on the satisfaction of them (the non-occurrence of choice overload). Also in satisfiers, in general search results, there was a significant difference between satisfaction from the small and large retrieved results. However, according to their personality and serendipity theory, with increasing the retrieved results, not only choice overload did not occur, but satisfaction of them was more. Hence we can the importance of two factors: the type of search and personality as modulators of choice overload. In general both personality types were satisfied with the speed of retrieve of results in Google search engine

    FNA Diagnostic Value in Patients with Neck Masses in Two Teaching Hospitals in Iran

    The FNA (fine needle aspiration) procedure is simple, inexpensive, available and a safe method for the diagnosis of a neck mass. FNA has numerous advantages over open surgical biopsies as an initial diagnostic tool; therefore we decided to compare the accuracy of this method with open biopsy. This Retrospective as well as Descriptive study comparing preoperative FNA results with existing data in the Pathology Department in Bu-Ali and Amir Alam Hospitals. Our study included 100 patients with neck masses of which 22 were thyroid masses, 31 were salivary gland masses, and 47 were other masses. Age ranged from 3 years to 80 years with the mean age of 42.6 years. There were 59 men and 41 women. The Sensitivity was 72%, Specificity 87%, PPV 85%, NPV 75% and diagnostic Accuracy 79%. In this study we had also26% false negative and 15% false positive. FNA is a valuable diagnostic tool in the management of neck masses; also it has been used for staging and planning of treatment for the wide and metastatic malignancy. This technique reduces the need for more invasive and costly procedures. According to the high sensitivity and high accuracy in this study, FNA can be used as the first step of diagnoses test in neck masses
