The Effect of Competitive Rivalry on Internal Communication in Private Healthcare Organizations: Evidence from Istanbul, Turkey

    Get PDF
Both competitive rivalry and internal communication play a crucial role for a business to position itself in a favourable manner in order to succeed particularly in a hostile environment. While numerous studies present the importance of competitive rivalry and of communication, even internal communication separately, little is known about the specific linkage of how competitive rivalry affects communication in the literature. Within the framework of internal communication, this study focuses on the notion that competitive rivalry is related to the path and style of communication as well as to the usage of internal communication tools but not to quality of communication. Thus, our research presents the linkage and the interaction between competitive rivalry and internal communication, of which the results indicate that, overall, competitive rivalry has a significant direct positive influence on internal communication dimensions in terms of path, style and quality of communication, as well as usage of communication tools in healthcare organizations

CONSTRUCTIVISM AND ITS REFLECTIONS TO TEACHING APPLICATIONS

An effective teaching process makes it necessary primarily to know the quality of learning and how learning occurs. Learning theories explain in which conditions learning occurs. Also, learning theories set principles for how to realize teaching applications. Recently, constructivism which is accepted as a new learning theory effects learning applications deeply. In constructivism, which wants individuals do not take knowledge passively from the environment but taking responsibility in learning process and being active, learning theories are used such as cooperative learning, problem based learning and project based learning. In this study, firstly perspectives of learning theories from behaviorism to constructivism to learning and teaching are emphasized, then similarities and difference teaching applications which are reflections of constructivism to teaching applications, such as cooperative learning, problem based learning and project based learning are explained by asserting these features of these learning approach.Constructivism, problem based learning, project based learning, cooperative learning.

Endocervical polyps in high risk human papillomavirus infections

Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) positive patients with and without endocervical polyps is compared with respect to HPV genotypes and presence of pre-invasive diseases. To our knowledge, this is the first and largest report in the literature examining the endocervical polyps in HPV positive cases. Material and methods: Clinicopathological data for the first one million screening patients (n = 1 060 992) from around the entire country during 2015 and 2016 were targeted for this research. Colposcopy, colposcopic surgical diagnostic procedures and final pathology results of 3499 patients with high-risk (HR) HPV-positive were obtained from reference colposcopy centers. Patients with endocervical polyps (n = 243 [6.9 %]) were accepted as experimental arm while patients without any endocervical polyp (n = 3256 [93.1%]) were regarded as the control group. Age, HPV genotype, Pap smear abnormality, and final pathological results were compared between two groups using Student’s t-test and cross-tabulation chi-square test. Results: The incidence of endocervical polyp was found to be 6.9 % in HR HPV-positive women. The most common HPV genotypes observed in both groups were HPV 16 or 18. Abnormal cytology reports (≥ ASC-US) were not significantly different between both groups. However, with respect to final pathological diagnosis, patients with endocervical polyp had significantly lower numbers of pre-invasive diseases (31.3% vs 44.2%; p < 0.10). Conclusions: Endocervical polyps may be more common in patients with HR HPV infections. HPV 18 is observed significantly more, in the HR HPV positive endocervical polyp group. Patients with endocervical polyps do not have increased risk for preinvasive cervical diseases

Linking strategic and market orientations to organizational performance: the role of innovation in private healthcare organizations

    No full text
Scholars have been extensively researching the link between strategic and market orientations and organizational performance and the link between innovativeness and organizational performance in various different settings. Given the centrality of those orientations and of innovativeness to the organizational performance in both manufacturing and service industries, scholars do not focus on the missing link of innovativeness among the relationship of those orientations with the performance, particularly in a service industry. Thus, this study aspiresto be the bridge among those variables in a highly competitive environment in developing country of whose results indicate that innovativeness is largely dependent on market orientation and seems to be playing a mediator role to drive organizational performance in private healthcare organizations. However, it does not support the link between strategic orientation and innovativeness as well as organizational performance. Thus, strategic orientation seems not to be a descriptive variable for and have interaction with organizational performance as well as innovativeness although they are highly correlated to each other

Warfarin-induced bilateral renal hematoma causing acute renal failure

Acute renal failure due to bilateral hematoma is a rare complication of anticoagulant warfarin therapy. A 43-year-old man presented with complaints of hematuria and abdominal pain. He had been receiving warfarin for six years, after placement of an aortic valve prosthesis. One week prior to admission, he sustained a urinary tract infection which was treated with third-generation cephalosporin and indomethacin. His serum creatinine level was 1.8 mg/dl with an INR of 15. Three days later, he developed anuria and was treated with hemodialysis. Renal ultrasonography disclosed moderate bilateral hydronephrosis. Computed tomography without contrast enhancement showed bilateral extensive hyperdense thickening of the renal and ureteral walls and high-attenuation areas. Conservative treatment was preferred and diuresis resumed spontaneously, lumbar pain disappeared, and serum creatinine level returned to normal. One month later, renal computed tomography was found normal

Chronic inflammation occurs systematically in the central nervous system during ageing, it has been shown that neuroinflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative disorders. Aspirin, a nonselective COX inhibitor, as well as ascorbic acid, has been purported to protect cerebral tissue. We investigated the effects of subchronic aspirin and ascorbic acid usage on spatial learning, oxidative stress and expressions of NR2A, NR2B, nAChR alpha 7, alpha 4 and beta 2. Forty male rats (16-18 months) were divided into 4 groups, namely, control, aspirin-treated, ascorbic acid-treated, aspirin + ascorbic acid-treated groups. Following 10-weeks administration period, rats were trained and tested in the Morris water maze. 8-Hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine and malondialdehyde were evaluated by ELISA and HPLC, respectively. Receptor expressions were assessed by western blotting of hippocampi. Spatial learning performance improved partially in the aspirin group, but significant improvement was seen in the aspirin + ascorbic acid group (p < 0.05). While 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine and malondialdehyde levels were significantly decreased, NR2B and nAChRa7 expressions were significantly increased in the aspirin + ascorbic acid group as compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Subchronic treatment with aspirin + ascorbic acid in aged rats was shown to enhance cognitive performance and increase the expressions of several receptors related to learning and memory process.
