GRO J1744-28, search for the counterpart: infrared photometry and spectroscopy
Using VLT/ISAAC, we detected 2 candidate counterparts to the bursting pulsar
GRO J1744-28, one bright and one faint, within the X-ray error circles of
XMM-Newton and Chandra. In determining the spectral types of the counterparts
we applied 3 different extinction corrections; one for an all-sky value, one
for a Galactic Bulge value and one for a local value. We find the local value,
with an extinction law of alpha = 3.23 +- 0.01 is the only correction that
results in colours and magnitudes for both bright and faint counterparts
consistent with a small range of spectral types, and for the bright
counterpart, consistent with the spectroscopic identification. Photometry of
the faint candidate indicates it is a K7/M0 V star at a distance of 3.75 +- 1
kpc. This star would require a very low inclination angle (i < 9deg) to satisfy
the mass function constraints; however it cannot be excluded as the counterpart
without follow-up spectroscopy to detect emission signatures of accretion.
Photometry and spectroscopy of the bright candidate indicate it is most likely
a G/K III star. The spectrum does not show Br-gamma emission, a known indicator
of accretion. The bright star's magnitudes are in agreement with the
constraints placed on a probable counterpart by the calculations of Rappaport &
Joss (1997) for an evolved star that has had its envelope stripped. The mass
function indicates the counterpart should have M < 0.3 Msol for an inclination
of i >= 15deg; a stripped giant, or a main sequence M3+ V star are consistent
with this mass-function constraint. In both cases mass-transfer, if present,
will be by wind-accretion as the counterpart will not fill its Roche lobe given
the observed orbital period. The derived magnetic field of 2.4 x 10^{11} G will
inhibit accretion by the propeller effect, hence its quiescent state.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 table, MNRAS accepted Changes to the content

Computer program for calculating full potential transonic, quasi-three-dimensional flow through a rotating turbomachinery blade row
A fast, reliable computer code is described for calculating the flow field about a cascade of arbitrary two dimensional airfoils. The method approximates the three dimensional flow in a turbomachinery blade row by correcting for stream tube convergence and radius change in the throughflow direction. A fully conservative solution of the full potential equation is combined with the finite volume technique on a body-fitted periodic mesh, with an artificial density imposed in the transonic region to insure stability and the capture of shock waves. The instructions required to set up and use the code are included. The name of the code is QSONIC. A numerical example is also given to illustrate the output of the program
Surgery groups of the fundamental groups of hyperplane arrangement complements
Using a recent result of Bartels and Lueck (arXiv:0901.0442) we deduce that
the Farrell-Jones Fibered Isomorphism conjecture in L-theory is true for any
group which contains a finite index strongly poly-free normal subgroup, in
particular, for the Artin full braid groups. As a consequence we explicitly
compute the surgery groups of the Artin pure braid groups. This is obtained as
a corollary to a computation of the surgery groups of a more general class of
groups, namely for the fundamental group of the complement of any fiber-type
hyperplane arrangement in the complex n-space.Comment: 11 pages, AMSLATEX file, revised following referee's comments and

Brady et al.'s (2005) service evaluation models: A replication and extension in China
The research described in this study replicates and extends the Brady et al., [Brady, M. K., Knight, G. A., Cronin Jr. J. Toma, G., Hult, M. and Keillor, B. D. (2005), emoving the Contextual Lens: A Multinational, Mult-setting Comparison of Service Evaluation Models, Journal of Retailing, 81(3), pp. 215-230] study suggestion that future research in service evaluations should focus on emerging service economies such as China. The intent of the research was to examine the suitability of the models suggested by Brady and colleagues in the Chinese market. The replication somewhat successfully duplicated their finding as to the superiority of the comprehensive service evaluation model. Additionally, we also sought to examine as to whether the service evaluation model is gender invariant. Our findings indicate that there are significant differences between gender. These findings are discussed relative to the limitations associated with the study
Hydrodynamic Spinodal Decomposition: Growth Kinetics and Scaling Functions
We examine the effects of hydrodynamics on the late stage kinetics in
spinodal decomposition. From computer simulations of a lattice Boltzmann scheme
we observe, for critical quenches, that single phase domains grow
asymptotically like , with in two dimensions
and in three dimensions, both in excellent agreement with
theoretical predictions.Comment: 12 pages, latex, Physical Review B Rapid Communication (in press
Data compression for the Cassini radio and plasma wave instrument
The Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science experiment will employ data compression to make effective use of the available data telemetry bandwidth. Some compression will be achieved by use of a lossless data compression chip and some by software in a dedicated 80C85 processor. A description of the instrument and data compression system are included in this report. Also, the selection of data compression systems and acceptability of data degradation is addressed
Distributive Justice and the Crime Drop
Data were extracted from a total of almost 600000 respondents from all sweeps of the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) 1982-2012 to determine whether victimisation was more or less concentrated across households during the crime drop. The most victimised household decile experienced the greatest absolute decline in victimisation but still accounted for over 70% of all victimisations suffered. Methodological issues underlying the patterns observed are discussed. The characteristics associated with highly victimised household are consistent across survey sweeps. Cross-national and crime type extension of work of the kind undertaken is advocated as both intrinsically important and likely to clarify the dynamics of the crime drop
Improved computer programs for calculating potential flow in propulsion system inlets
Computer programs to calculate the incompressible potential flow corrected for compressibility in axisymmetric inlets at arbitrary operating conditions are presented. Included are a statement of the problem to be solved, a description of each of the programs and sufficient documentation, including a test case, to enable a user to run the programs
Superconducting Magnetization above the Irreversibility Line in Tl2Ba2CuO6
Piezolever torque magnetometry has been used to measure the magnetization of
superconducting Tl2Ba2CuO6. Three crystals with different levels of oxygen
overdoping were investigated in magnetic fields up to 10 Tesla. In all cases,
the magnetization above the irreversibility line was found to depart from the
behaviour M ~ ln(Hc2/H) of a simple London-like vortex liquid. In particular,
for a strongly overdoped (Tc = 15K) crystal, the remnant superconducting order
above the irreversibility line is characterized by a linear diamagnetic
response (M ~ H) that persists well above Tc and also up to the highest field
employed.Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages, 7 encapsulated PostScript figures, submitted to
