    Modelling Contracts and Workflows for Verification and Enactment

    The work presented in this thesis concerns some aspects related to the Modelling of Contracts and Workflows for Verification and Enactment. We have sought to gain some insight into the nature of contracts and workflows. in order that we may model them. primarily, for the purposes of verifying certain properties and for enacting them. Workflows help coordinate the enactment of business processes. A notable aspect of workflow technologies is the lack of formal semantics for workflow models. In this thesis, we consider the characterisation of workflow using a number of formal tools, viz. Milner's CCS, Cleaveland et ai's Prioritised CCS (which we abbreviate to PCCS) and the Situation Calculus (thanks mainly to Reiter), which is based on First-Order Logic. Using these, we provide formalisations of production workflows, which are somewhat rigid, inflexible structures, akin to production lines. We do so, in order that we may fiJo: their operational meaning for the purposes of verification and enactment. We define the Liesbet meta-model for production workflow to provide a reference ontology for the task of formalisation. We have also implemented a framework for the verification and enactment of Liesbet workflow models. Regarding verification, we are particularly interested in the key property of soundness, which is concerned with an absence of locking and redundant tasks in a workflow model. Our framework is capable of verifying this property of workflow models, as well as arbitrary temporally-extended constraints', which are constraints whose satisfaction is determined over successive states of enactment of a model. We also consider the definition of more flexible workflows, including collaborative workflows, using an approach that we have conceived called Institutional Workflow Modelling (IWM). The essence of IWM lies (in part) in the identification that the structure of a workflow model necessarily entails the existence of counts as relations. These relations prescribe how the occurrence of certain actions, in the context of a particular workflow model. count as the occurrence of other actions. We have also been interested in the modelling of contracts; and have found IWM to be useful as a foundational basis for contract modelling. ????????? Another fu.ndamental aspect of our IWM-based approach is a correspondence, which we have identified, between counts as relations and methods in Hierarchical Task Network (HTN)-based planning. Thus, we are able to advocate the use of an HTN-based planning framework for the verification of flexible workflows and contracts. We have implemented such a framework, whose planner is called Theodore. We define a sjmilar notion of soundness for flexible workflows and contracts, which the Theodore-based framework is able to verify, along with arbitrary temporallyextended constraints.Imperial Users onl

    The Magellanic system X-ray sources

    Using archival X-ray data from the second XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue, we present comparative analysis of the overall population of X-ray sources in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We see a difference between the characteristics of the brighter sources in the two populations in the X-ray band. Utilising flux measurements in different energy bands we are able to sort the X-ray sources based on similarities to other previously identified and classified objects. In this manner we are able to identify the probable nature of some of the unknown objects, identifying a number of possible X-ray binaries and Super Soft Sources.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     GRO J1744-28, search for the counterpart: infrared photometry and spectroscopy

    Using VLT/ISAAC, we detected 2 candidate counterparts to the bursting pulsar GRO J1744-28, one bright and one faint, within the X-ray error circles of XMM-Newton and Chandra. In determining the spectral types of the counterparts we applied 3 different extinction corrections; one for an all-sky value, one for a Galactic Bulge value and one for a local value. We find the local value, with an extinction law of alpha = 3.23 +- 0.01 is the only correction that results in colours and magnitudes for both bright and faint counterparts consistent with a small range of spectral types, and for the bright counterpart, consistent with the spectroscopic identification. Photometry of the faint candidate indicates it is a K7/M0 V star at a distance of 3.75 +- 1 kpc. This star would require a very low inclination angle (i < 9deg) to satisfy the mass function constraints; however it cannot be excluded as the counterpart without follow-up spectroscopy to detect emission signatures of accretion. Photometry and spectroscopy of the bright candidate indicate it is most likely a G/K III star. The spectrum does not show Br-gamma emission, a known indicator of accretion. The bright star's magnitudes are in agreement with the constraints placed on a probable counterpart by the calculations of Rappaport & Joss (1997) for an evolved star that has had its envelope stripped. The mass function indicates the counterpart should have M < 0.3 Msol for an inclination of i >= 15deg; a stripped giant, or a main sequence M3+ V star are consistent with this mass-function constraint. In both cases mass-transfer, if present, will be by wind-accretion as the counterpart will not fill its Roche lobe given the observed orbital period. The derived magnetic field of 2.4 x 10^{11} G will inhibit accretion by the propeller effect, hence its quiescent state.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 table, MNRAS accepted Changes to the content and an increased analysis of the Galactic centre extinctio

    Measuring social identity in interfunctional research in marketing

    Management of social identities is important for optimizing intergroup relations in organizations, and for overall organizational performance. Research on marketing’s intergroup relations employs different social identity constructs. This leaves managers and academics confused as to what impact different social identity constructs have on organizational outcomes. We therefore tested the impact of competing social identity constructs (i.e., functional identity [FI], organizational identity [OI]) on important outcomes. We find different combinations of social identity constructs result in different levels of relationship quality and departmental performance, and that FI and OI measures provide more useful information than the accepted relative functional identity or OI measures in isolation. Academic and practical implications are advanced

Firstly, items generated from qualitative interviews are discussed and the conceptual dimensions of the service leadership scale are formulated. Following this, results from the application of Anderson and Gerbing’s (1991) substantive validity test are examined and interpreted, giving indication of further scale development issues. Finally, conclusions and future research directions are presented

    What does "good" look like? A three-country examination of marketing practice

    Grounded in configuration theory, this study investigates the notion of co-alignment of business orientation, marketing assets and marketing capabilities, and their relationships to performance. Using these criteria, profiles of high performing businesses were derived and assessed against a three country sample of Brazil, China and the UK. Findings are consistent, statistically significant and invariant across the sample. They show that businesses with ideal profiles significantly outperform competitors in terms of market-based performance, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. Furthermore, profiles of top performing organizations are similar across countries with respect to their orientations, assets, and capabilities. Only customer-based assets, network capabilities, and customer and shareholder orientations were different. Implications and future research directions are subsequently addressed
