Detecting Gluino-Containing Hadrons
When SUSY breaking produces only dimension-2 operators, gluino and photino
masses are of order 1 GeV or less. The gluon-gluino bound state has mass
1.3-2.2 GeV and lifetime > 10^{-5} - 10^{-10} s. This range of mass and
lifetime is largely unconstrained because missing energy and beam dump
techniques are ineffective. With only small modifications, upcoming K^0 decay
experiments can study most of the interesting range. The lightest
gluino-containing baryon (uds-gluino) is long-lived or stable; experiments to
find it and the uud-gluino are also discussed.Comment: 13 pp, 1 figure (uuencoded). Descendant of hep-ph/9504295,

Mock Catalogs for UHECR Studies
We provide realistic mock-catalogs of cosmic rays above 40 EeV, for a pure
proton composition, assuming their sources are a random subset of ordinary
galaxies in a simulated, volume-limited survey, for various choices of source
density: 10^-3.5 Mpc^-3, 10^-4.0 Mpc^-3 and 10^-4.5 Mpc^-3. The spectrum at the
source is taken to be E^-2.3 and the effects of cosmological redshifting as
well as photo-pion and e^+ e^- energy losses are included.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Comment on the paper "Calorimetric Dark Matter Detection with Galactic Center Gas Clouds"
The paper "Calorimetric Dark Matter Detection with Galactic Center Gas
Clouds" (Bhoonah et al. 2018) aims to derive limits on dark matter interactions
by demanding that heat transfer due to DM interactions is less than that by
astrophysical cooling, using clouds in the hot, high-velocity nuclear outflow
wind of the Milky Way ( K, 330 km/s).
We argue that clouds in such an extreme environment cannot be assumed to be
stable over the long timescales associated with their radiative cooling rates.
Furthermore, Bhoonah et al. (2018) uses incorrect parameters for their clouds.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure. Version appearing in Phys. Rev. Let
Effective CP violation in the Standard Model
We study the strength of effective CP violation originating from the CKM
matrix in the effective action obtained by integrating out the fermions in the
Standard Model. Using results obtained by Salcedo for the effective action in a
general chiral gauge model, we find that there are no CKM CP-violating terms to
fourth order in a gauge-covariant derivative expansion that is non-perturbative
in the Higgs field. The details of the calculation suggest that, at zero
temperature, the strength of CP violation is approximately independent of the
overall scale of the Yukawa couplings. Thus, order of magnitude estimates based
on Jarlskog's invariant could be too small by a factor of about 10^{17}.Comment: 19 pages, no figure

Correlation between Compact Radio Quasars and Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays
Some proposals to account for the highest energy cosmic rays predict that
they should point to their sources. We study the five highest energy events
(E>10^20 eV) and find they are all aligned with compact, radio-loud quasars.
The probability that these alignments are coincidental is 0.005, given the
accuracy of the position measurements and the rarity of such sources. The
source quasars have redshifts between 0.3 and 2.2. If the correlation pointed
out here is confirmed by further data, the primary must be a new hadron or one
produced by a novel mechanism.Comment: 8 pages, 3 tables, revtex. with some versions of latex it's necessary

Hadron Helicity Violation in Exclusive Processes: Quantitative Calculations in Leading Order QCD
We study a new mechanism for hadronic helicity flip in high energy hard
exclusive reactions. The mechanism proceeds in the limit of perfect chiral
symmetry, namely without any need to flip a quark helicity. The fundamental
feature of the new mechanism is the breaking of rotational symmetry of the hard
collision by a scattering plane in processes involving independent quark
scattering. We show that in the impulse approximation there is no evidence for
of the helicity violating process as the energy or momentum transfer is
increased over the region 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. In the asymptotic region
Q^2> 1000 GeV^2, a saddle point approximation with doubly logarithmic accuracy
yields suppression by a fraction of power of Q^2. ``Chirally--odd" exclusive
wave functions which carry non--zero orbital angular momentum and yet are
leading order in the high energy limit, play an important role.Comment: uuencoded LaTeX file (21 pages) and PostScript figure
Damage identification in a concrete beam using curvature difference ratio
Previous studies utilising changes in mode shape or curvature to locate damage rely on the fact that the greatest change occurs around the defect. However, in concrete beams this fact is undermined due to the nature of the defect as distributed multi-site cracks. In addition, differences in mode shape and curvature as ways to locate the damage is unstable because of occurrence of modal nodes and inflection points. In this paper, one interesting solution to this problem is being tested by establishing a new non-dimensional expression designated the 'Curvature Difference Ratio (CDR)'. This parameter exploits the ratio of differences in curvature of a specific mode shape for a damaged stage and another reference stage. The expression CDR is reasonably used to locate the damage and estimate the dynamic bending stiffness in a successively loaded 6m concrete beam. Results obtained by the proposed technique are tested and validated with a case study results done by Ren and De Roeck [1] also by Maeck and De Roeck [2]. Another contribution of this work is that relating changes in vibration properties to the design bending moment at beam sections as defined in Eurocode 2 specifications [3]. Linking between a beam section condition and the change in vibration data will help to give a better comprehension on the beam condition than the applied load
