    On se propose ici de discuter de la place qu'a tenue l'histoire dans l'élaboration de la politique extérieure du pays en se référant principalement aux années d'après la deuxième guerre mondiale.L'auteur s'arrête d'abord aux "leçons" qui se dégagent de cette histoire, tant celles qui sont issues de la mémoire collective que celles qui résultent d'un événement particulier. Dans le premier groupe figurent l'importance de l'unité nationale, le besoin de faire contrepoids aux Etats-Unis et la conscience grandissante du rôle d'intermédiaire que le pays est appelé à jouer de par la place singulière qu'il a toujours occupée entre la Grande-Bretagne et les Etats-Unis. Au chapitre des événements, l'auteur s'attarde à la dépression des années trente, à l'échec de la Ligue des Nations, aux accords de Munich et aux relations quasi fraternelles que le Canada entretient avec son voisin du sud depuis le début du siècle.Au fil des ans et des événements, un certain style de diplomatie s'est façonné. Ce style, il est empirique et discret, axé sur l'immédiat, préoccupé du juste milieu et reconnu pour sa grande capacité d'adaptation. Maints exemples sont apportés à l'appui de l'une ou l'autre caractéristique et l'auteur conclut en souhaitant que les documents, en particulier ceux qui se rapportent aux affaires extérieures du pays, deviennent de plus en plus accessibles aux chercheurs.     Human interactions with tropical environments over the last 14,000 years at Iho Eleru, Nigeria

    The Ihò Eléérú (or Iho Eleru) rock shelter, located in Southwest Nigeria, is the only site from which Pleistocene-age hominin fossils have been recovered in western Africa. Excavations at Iho Eleru revealed regular human occupations ranging from the Later Stone Age (LSA) to the present day. Here, we present chronometric, archaeobotanical, and paleoenvironmental findings, which include the taxonomic, taphonomic, and isotopic analyses of what is the only Pleistocene faunal assemblage documented in western Africa. Our results indicate that the local landscape surrounding Iho Eleru, although situated within a regional open-canopy biome, was forested throughout the past human occupation of the site. At a regional scale, a shift from forest- to savanna-dominated ecotonal environment occurred during a mid-Holocene warm event 6,000 years ago, with a subsequent modern reforestation of the landscape. Locally, no environmental shift was observable, placing Iho Eleru in a persistent forested “island” during the period of occupation

    Reference Intervals for bone impact microindentation in healthy adults: a multi-centre international study

    Impact microindentation (IMI) is a novel technique for assessing bone material strength index (BMSi) in vivo, by measuring the depth of a micron-sized, spherical tip into cortical bone that is then indexed to the depth of the tip into a reference material. The aim of this study was to define the reference intervals for men and women by evaluating healthy adults from the United States of America, Europe and Australia. Participants included community-based volunteers and participants drawn from clinical and population-based studies. BMSi was measured on the tibial diaphysis using an OsteoProbe in 479 healthy adults (197 male and 282 female, ages 25 to 98 years) across seven research centres, between 2011 and 2018. Associations between BMSi, age, sex and areal bone mineral density (BMD) were examined following an a posteriori method. Unitless BMSi values ranged from 48 to 101. The mean (+/- standard deviation) BMSi for men was 84.4 +/- 6.9 and for women, 79.0 +/- 9.1. Healthy reference intervals for BMSi were identified as 71.0 to 97.9 for men and 59.8 to 95.2 for women. This study provides healthy reference data that can be used to calculate T- and Z-scores for BMSi and assist in determining the utility of BMSi in fracture prediction. These data will be useful for positioning individuals within the population and for identifying those with BMSi at the extremes of the population.Metabolic health: pathophysiological trajectories and therap

    The boomerang effect of radicalism in Discursive Psychology: A critical overview of the controversy with the Social Representations Theory.

    This article provides a critical overview of the controversy between the Radical approach to Discursive Psychology (RDP) and the Social Representations Theory (SRT) and aims: a)?to show what is potentially complementary and contradictory in Discursive Psychology (DP) and the Social Representations Theory, when and why they are incompatible, and whether and how it is possible and/or desirable to integrate these two approaches. b)?to describe how the radicalism of the socio-constructionist thesis upheld by Discourse Analysis can give rise to several hard-to-solve problems, which may then be translated into a boomerang effect. In the final section, it highlights interest in dialog and “cross-fertilization” between researchers inspired by the less radical approach to discursive psychology and those inspired by the Social Representations Theory, pointing out the effect of methodological implications that would ensue

    All-sky search for long-duration gravitational wave transients with initial LIGO

    We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational wave transients in two sets of data collected by the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors between November 5, 2005 and September 30, 2007, and July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010, with a total observational time of 283.0 days and 132.9 days, respectively. The search targets gravitational wave transients of duration 10-500 s in a frequency band of 40-1000 Hz, with minimal assumptions about the signal waveform, polarization, source direction, or time of occurrence. All candidate triggers were consistent with the expected background; as a result we set 90% confidence upper limits on the rate of long-duration gravitational wave transients for different types of gravitational wave signals. For signals from black hole accretion disk instabilities, we set upper limits on the source rate density between 3.4×10-5 and 9.4×10-4 Mpc-3 yr-1 at 90% confidence. These are the first results from an all-sky search for unmodeled long-duration transient gravitational waves. © 2016 American Physical Society
