    Interpretation of an index of phytoplankton population composition calculated from Remote Airborne Fluorsensor (RAF) data

    The calculation of indices of phytoplankton population composition from chlorophyll a fluorescence at 685 nm excited by narrow band light at 454 and 539 nm is discussed. The ratio of the fluorescence excited by light of these two wavelengths is a function of the distribution of the phytoplankton between two color groups, designated the golden-brown and the green. The golden-brown group consists of those species which have the highly photosynthetically active carotenoid-chlorophyll-a-protein complexes, i.e. members of the classes Bacillariophyceae, diatoms Dinophyceae, dinoflagellates, and some members of the class Prymnesiophyceae. The green color group consists those species of phytoplankton which apparently lack those complexes, i.e. members of the classes Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Prasinophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, Xanthophyceae, and a few members of the Prymnesiophyceae. A few species of phytoplankton appear to have intermediate characteristics, and would apparently belong to neither group. Most of these species are members of the class Cryptophyceae.     A semi-automated process for the production of custom-made shoes

    A more efficient, cost-effective and timely way of designing and manufacturing custom footware is needed. A potential solution to this problem lies in the use of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques in the production of custom shoes. A prototype computer-based system was developed, and the system is primarily a software entity which directs and controls a 3-D scanner, a lathe or milling machine, and a pattern-cutting machine to produce the shoe last and the components to be assembled into a shoe. The steps in this process are: (1) scan the surface of the foot to obtain a 3-D image; (2) thin the foot surface data and create a tiled wire model of the foot; (3) interactively modify the wire model of the foot to produce a model of the shoe last; (4) machine the last; (5) scan the surface of the last and verify that it correctly represents the last model; (6) design cutting patterns for shoe uppers; (7) cut uppers; (8) machine an inverse mold for the shoe innersole/sole combination; (9) mold the innersole/sole; and (10) assemble the shoe. For all its capabilities, this system still requires the direction and assistance of skilled operators, and shoemakers to assemble the shoes. Currently, the system is running on a SUN3/260 workstation with TAAC application accelerator. The software elements of the system are written in either Fortran or C and run under a UNIX operator system

    This article proposes that a better understanding of the identity of Scots criminal law can be developed through an analysis of the similarities between English and Scots law rather than by concentrating on the differences. It argues that historically there are striking similarities between the two laws which have been overlooked or ignoredfor various reasons. It goes on to argue that many ofthe current differences between the two laws can be explained in terms of contemporary academic and institutional conditions, and that these offer a betterfoundation on which to construct a principled theoretical understanding of Scots criminal law

    A real time spectrum to dose conversion system

    A system has been developed which permits the determination of dose in real time or near real time directly from the pulse-height output of a radiation spectrometer. The technique involves the use of the resolution matrix of a spectrometer, the radiation energy-to-dose conversion function, and the geometrical factors, although the order of matrix operations is reversed. The new technique yields a result which is mathematically identical to the standard method while requiring no matrix manipulations or resolution matrix storage in the remote computer. It utilizes only a single function for each type dose required and each geometric factor involved

    Keating and Snaith showed that the 2kth2k^{th} absolute moment of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix evaluated on the unit circle is given by a polynomial of degree k2k^2. In this article, uniform asymptotics for the coefficients of that polynomial are derived, and a maximal coefficient is located. Some of the asymptotics are given in explicit form.     The behaviour and adaptation of reintroduced chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) in the Republic of Congo

    Increasing and unsustainable demands on Africa's natural resources are having a profound effect on wild primate populations. Whilst wild populations are decreasing, numbers of orphaned primates, sanctuaries and attempts to reintroduce primates back to the natural environment, are increasing. Data were collected on the present status of African ape sanctuaries from questionnaires distributed to sanctuary managers. Across Africa there are 18 sanctuaries housing over 500 African great apes. Facilities and ideologies vary but the majority of sanctuaries profess a commitment to conservation through education, local capacity building, facilitating the enforcement of wildlife laws and other activities. From 1996 to 2001 the non-governmental organisation Habitat Ecologique et Liberte des Primates has released 37 wild-born chimpanzees(Pan troglodytes troglodytes) from an island sanctuary to mainland forest in the Conkouati-Douli National Park, Republic of Congo. Twenty-seven chimpanzees have been successfully reintroduced, three are known to have died and the status of seven remains unknown. This thesis investigated the behavioural adaptation of 15 of these released chimpanzees and reviews the reintroduction process employed. Analyses of post-release behavioural data revealed that activity budgets and diet were comparable to those of wild chimpanzees, and that seasonal variation influenced feeding behaviour and plant speciess election. The chimpanzees utilised both terrestrial and arboreal zones and all nested in trees. A number of recommendations are made for future reintroduction projects. These include selecting a release site that has no, or a low density of, wild conspecifics; developing a relationship of trust between chimpanzee and caretakers without excessive dependency; using the release site for pre-release training; use of radio telemetry; post-release support and monitoring. This study has revealed the many complex factors that are involved in the reintroduction process. Future attempts to reintroduce chimpanzees should be guided by the experiences and recommendations of the present study to maximise success

    Effects of systematic errors on the mixing ratios of trace gases obtained from occulation spectra

    The influence of systematic errors in the parameters of the models describing the geometry and the atmosphere on the profiles of trace gases retrieved from simulated solar occultation spectra, collected at satellite altitudes, is investigated. Because of smearing effects and other uncertainties, it may be preferable to calibrate the spectra internally by measuring absorption lines of an atmospheric gas such as CO2 whose vertical distribution is assumed rather than to relay on externally supplied information

    Using narrative fiction as a means of assessing and learning in a history of social welfare module

    This paper reports a pilot assessment project in which Sociology & Social Policy students were asked to write, as a group, a fictional narrative concerning one of a number of characters set within one of a choice of time periods. Students were able to decide on the character, setting and story from a range of lecturer-provided scenarios and time periods which reflected many of the key areas covered in lecture and seminar classes. The knowledge to be uncovered by the project brief aligned with the summative assignment for the module. Students were expected, in their narratives, to identify and make explicit reference to legislation, social policy information and sociological/anthropological concepts pertinent to the period and chosen character. They were also advised to draw upon reading of literature contemporary to the period and the characters chosen in a way that would inform their narratives and help them develop a credible plot and storyline. A 2-3,000 word fictional narrative was to be produced by each group covering the period in the character’s life denoted by their age and situation. The project was assessed in a formative way but did not attract marks towards the summative assignment for the module. However, all students taking this core module played an active part in the construction of the narratives and encouraged to consider aspects of meta-learning including how they can work with others and cooperate as a member of a team. Students who undertook this module gained a rich and deep understanding of social welfare, policy and sociological understandings of the human condition that could be transferred to other aspects of the students’ degree, despite some feeling aggrieved that the work attracted no marks. As a result of the pilot’s success, the project has been developed into the core mode of assessment for this module in the future. Advantages and disadvantages of the narrative assessment are reported, examples provided, and suggestions made for the future use of this mode of assessment

    Laboratory tank studies of a single species of phytoplankton using a remote sensing fluorosensor

    Phytoplankton were grown in the laboratory for the purpose of testing a remote fluorosensor. The fluorosensor uses a unique four-wavelength dye laser system to excite phytoplankton bearing chlorophyll and to measure the chlorophyll fluorescence generated by this excitation. Six different species were tested, one at a time, and each was grown two to four times. Fluorescence measured by the fluorosensor provides good quantitative measurement of chlorophyll concentrations for all species tested while the cultures were in log phase growth. Fluorescene cross section ratios obtained in the single species tank tests support the hypothesis that the shape of the fluorescence cross section curve remains constant with the species (differences in fluorescence cross section ratios are a basis for determining composition of phytoplankton according to color group when a multiwavelength source of excitation is used. Linear relationships exist between extracted chlorophyll concentration and fluorescence measured by the remote fluorosensor during the log phase growth of phytoplankton cultures tested
