Molybdenum Valence in Basaltic Silicate Melts

The moderately siderophile element molybdenum has been used as an indicator in planetary differentiation processes, and is particularly relevant to core formation [for example, 1-6]. However, models that apply experimental data to an equilibrium differentiation scenario infer the oxidation state of molybdenum from solubility data or from multivariable coefficients from metal-silicate partitioning data [1,3,7]. Partitioning behavior of molybdenum, a multivalent element with a transition near the J02 of interest for core formation (~IW-2) will be sensitive to changes in JO2 of the system and silicate melt structure. In a silicate melt, Mo can occur in either 4+ or 6+ valence state, and Mo6+ can be either octahedrally or tetrahedrally coordinated. Here we present first XANES measurements of Mo valence in basaltic run products at a range of P, T, and JO2 and further quantify the valence transition of Mo

Decentralized multi-agent patrolling strategies using global idleness estimation

International audienceThis paper presents preliminary results in the challenge of developing decentralised strategies approaching the performances of centralised ones. Indeed, the latter are better than the former due to centralisation of information. The approach studied here involves the estimation of node idlenesses derived from the paths of all agents, also known as real idlenesses, on the basis of those derived from the path of each agent considered alone, also known as individual idlenesses. This relation between real and individual idlenesses is learnt using traces of execution of a centralised strategy by optimising an error criterion. The strategy thereupon, uses online the learnt relation and is assessed according to certain evaluation criteria. The results indicate that such a relation between perceived and real idlenesses is not a function, leading to large values of the fitting criterion. Finally, the assessment of the strategy shows that performances are good in terms of mean interval but unsatisfactory in terms of quadratic mean interval

Penser la réforme pénitentiaire avec Michel Foucault: Apports et limites à une sociologie politique de la loi du 18 janvier 1994

National audienceIn the face of an over-hyped reform of the French prison system, Michel Foucault elaborated in Discipline and Punish a conception of the reform as a strategy to legitimize the penitentiary as such. To what extent is Foucault's view of the reform as a government tool heuristic in its perception of the 18 January 1994 law to reorganize prison management ? It would seem that although focusing on the institution of prisons as such enables Foucault to adopt a more critical view, it runs the risk of relegating professional struggles to a matter of secondary importance – and producing a disembodied sociology. So if we wish to study the 1994 reform, we need to give it back its historicity and, to that end, shift the sociological focus from the effects of the reform to the conditions that made it possible in the first place.À l'encontre d'une représentation trop événementielle de la réforme carcérale, Michel Foucault développa dans Surveiller et punir une conception de la réforme comme stratégie de légitimation de l'institution pénitentiaire.

Queer, Gender and Crime Fiction in French Studies: a Hazardous Scientific Endeavour

This article focuses on the multifaceted challenge faced by academics doing queer and gender studies of French crime fiction. It argues that the French literary arena still entertains a sharp divide between literature and commercialist mass fiction, which hinders the establishment of popular fiction studies. It further discusses the reasons for and the effect of queer theory’s late arrival to France, arguing that France’s strong republican ideal entails a fear of ghettoization that has undermined the development of gender and queer analysis, especially of literature. These phenomena, in combination with France’s centralized, traditionalist academic institutions and linguistic franco-centrism, contribute to the fact that there are no queer studies of French crime fiction to date. The article concludes by suggesting some possible approaches within the very diverse and elusive field of queer studies that would be suitable for crime fiction analysis and highlights the importance of paying attention to geographical and temporal contexts in such analyses

Bilateral Chylothorax Post Blunt Trauma: A Case Report

Introduction: Blunt trauma is a rare cause of chylothorax. In this study an uncommon case of traumatic chylothorax after blunt trauma is described along with treatment options.   Report on a Case: A 50-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with sudden onset of shortness of breath for one day. He had a history of road traffic accident 2 days ago, in which he received a strong jerk while trying to avoid impact with the dashboard of the vehicle. He has no past medical history. On examination, He was fully conscious and oriented. Air entry on both sides of the chest was reduced. The x-ray of the chest revealed bilateral blunting of costo-phrenic angels due to pleural effusion. Pleural fluid was sent for biochemical, microbiological and histopathological analysis. Fluid Triglyceride and cholesterol levels were elevated. Culture and sensitivity were negative while cytopathological analysis revealed increased WBCs. CT scan of the chest did not reveal any malignancy or mediastinal lymph nodes.  Bilateral Chest intubation was done to treat severe shortness of breath, that drained milky white fluid. The patient was observed without any particular treatment other than chest intubation. The patient responded well and was discharged uneventfully after five days.  Conclusion: Despite its rarity, chylothorax can occur after blunt trauma. Diagnosis should be confirmed by laboratory testing. Conservative management with or without chest intubation is a common treatment option.  Keywords: Blunt chest trauma, Chylothorax, Triglyceride.  &nbsp
