Evidence for a Bulk Complex Order-Parameter in Y0.9Ca0.1Ba2Cu3O7-delta Thin Films
We have measured the penetration depth of overdoped Y0.9Ca0.1Ba2Cu3O7-delta
(Ca-YBCO) thin films using two different methods. The change of the penetration
depth as a function of temperature has been measured using the parallel plate
resonator (PPR), while its absolute value was obtained from a quasi-optical
transmission measurements. Both sets of measurements are compatible with an
order parameter of the form: Delta*dx2-y2+i*delta*dxy, with Delta=14.5 +- 1.5
meV and delta=1.8 meV, indicating a finite gap at low temperature. Below 15 K
the drop of the scattering rate of uncondensed carriers becomes steeper in
contrast to a flattening observed for optimally doped YBCO films. This decrease
supports our results on the penetration depth temperature dependence. The
findings are in agreement with tunneling measurements on similar Ca-YBCO thin

Structure and mechanical properties of the welded joints of large-diameter pipes
The structure and mechanical properties of the technological welded joints of large-diameter pipes of strength class K60 produced by two companies are studied. Along with standard mechanical properties (σ0.2, σu, δ, ψ), specific work of deformation a (tensile toughness) and true rupture strength Sf are estimated from an analysis of the stress-strain diagrams constructed in true coordinates. The mechanical behavior is found to be different for samples cut from different zones of a welded joint (central weld, heat-affected zone, and base metal). The mutual correlation between parameters a, S f, and impact toughness KCV is considered. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd
Managerial Ability and the Quality of Firms’ Information Environment
In this study, we examine the relation between managerial ability and the quality of a firm’s information environment. An emerging stream of research has identified managerial ability as an important determinant of accruals quality and management forecast quality. However, our understanding of the impact of managerial ability on a firm’s broader information environment is incomplete because it captures more than these specific financial reporting disclosures. Using a composite index based on various proxies for a firm’s information environment, we find a positive relation between managerial ability and a firm’s information environment. Consistent with our argument that managers’ equity incentives improve disclosure quality, we find that the quality of a firm’s information environment improves when managers have higher levels of equity incentives. We contribute to the literature by providing more complete and conclusive evidence about the impact of managerial ability on a firm’s broader information environment

Molecular epidemiology of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp on swine farms in Ontario, Canada
A subset of swine farms in Ontario, Canada have been monitored for Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Fecal samples were collected from different stages of production as well as from manure pits. G. duodenalis cysts and Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected in the manure samples using immunofluorescence microscopy. A nested PCR and sequencing method was performed to determine the genotypes. A mixed multivariable method was used to compare the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in samples from different sources
Alcohol-induced apoptosis of oligodendrocytes in the fetal macaque brain
BACKGROUND: In utero exposure of the fetal non-human primate (NHP) brain to alcohol on a single occasion during early or late third-trimester gestation triggers widespread acute apoptotic death of cells in both gray and white matter (WM) regions of the fetal brain. In a prior publication, we documented that the dying gray matter cells are neurons, and described the regional distribution and magnitude of this cell death response. Here, we present new findings regarding the magnitude, identity and maturational status of the dying WM cells in these alcohol-exposed fetal NHP brains. RESULTS: Our findings document that the dying WM cells belong to the oligodendrocyte (OL) lineage. OLs become vulnerable when they are just beginning to generate myelin basic protein in preparation for myelinating axons, and they remain vulnerable throughout later stages of myelination. We found no evidence linking astrocytes, microglia or OL progenitors to this WM cell death response. The mean density (profiles per mm(3)) of dying WM cells in alcohol-exposed brains was 12.7 times higher than the mean density of WM cells dying by natural apoptosis in drug-naive control brains. CONCLUSIONS: In utero exposure of the fetal NHP brain to alcohol on a single occasion triggers widespread acute apoptotic death of neurons (previous study) and of OLs (present study) throughout WM regions of the developing brain. The rate of OL apoptosis in alcohol-exposed brains was 12.7 times higher than the natural OL apoptosis rate. OLs become sensitive to the apoptogenic action of alcohol when they are just beginning to generate constituents of myelin in their cytoplasm, and they remain vulnerable throughout later stages of myelination. There is growing evidence for a similar apoptotic response of both neurons and OLs following exposure of the developing brain to anesthetic and anticonvulsant drugs. Collectively, this body of evidence raises important questions regarding the role that neuro and oligo apoptosis may play in the human condition known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and also poses a question whether other apoptogenic drugs, although long considered safe for pediatric/obstetric use, may have the potential to cause iatrogenic FASD-like developmental disability syndromes

At the projected orbital altitudes, Shuttle launch and servicing are technically and economically viable. Power generation is specified as photovoltaic consistent with projected planning. The cost models and trades are based upon a zero interest rate (the government taxes concurrently as required), constant dollars (1980), and costs derived in the first half of 1980. Space platform utilization of up to 30 years is evaluated to fully understand the impact of resupply and replacement as satellite missions are extended. Evidence of a subenergy gap in the overdoped regime of Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} thin films from THz Spectroscopy
We measured the terahertz (THz) complex conductivity of Ca doped
YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} thin films in the frequency range of 0.1 to 3 THz (3
to 100 cm^{-1}) and at a temperature range of 20 to 300 K. The films were
measured using both time domain and frequency domain THz methods. We showed
evidence for the existence of a sub-gap in overdoped
Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} samples doped with 5% and 10% Ca.
Evidence for the opening of this sub-gap appears as a sharp decrease in the
spectrum of the real part of conductivity at frequencies equivalent to a gap
energy of 1 meV and is more prominent with increased doping. This decrease in
conductivity can be explained by using d-wave pairing symmetry with an
imaginary part of is or id_{xy} which suggests node removal.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
