Culture and identity in a society can be represented in the architecture and the meanings intertwined with it. In this sense, the architecture and design are the interface for transferring meaning and identity to the nation and future generations. Persian gardens have been evolved through the history of Persian Empire in regard to the culture and beliefs of the society. This paper aims to investigate the patterns of design and architecture in Persian gardens and the meanings intertwined with their patterns and significant elements such as water and trees. Persian gardens are not only about geometries and shapes; but also manifest different design elements, each representing a specific symbol and its significance among the society. This paper seeks to explore Persian gardens in terms of their geometric structure, irrigation system, network construction and pavilions alongside design qualities such as hierarchy, symmetry, centrality, rhythm and harmony. In the second stage, the paper investigates the fundamental symbols and their philosophy in the creation of Persian gardens and in relation to the architecture and design

DEVELOPMENT OF A MICROFLUIDIC GAS GENERATOR FROM AN EFFICIENT FILM-BASED MICROFABRICATION METHOD

Recently, tape&film based microfabrication method has been studied for rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices due to its low cost and ease of fabrication [1]. But most of the reported film-based microfluidic devices are simple single-layer patterned 2D designs, whose potential applications are limited. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication and testing results of a 3D structured microfluidic gas generator prototype. This gas generator is used as an example to introduce our new approach of film-based fabrication method towards lab-use microfluidic research, which usually requires constant change of design and prefers low fabrication cost and short fabrication period. The prototype is a film-based comprehensive microfluidic gas generator which integrates self-circulation, self-regulation, catalytic reaction and gas/liquid separation. Time and economy efficiency are the biggest merit of this method. The only required facility during the whole process is a digital craft-cutter. The working principle of the device is illustrated in Fig.1

Enamel matrix derivative (EMD), such as Emdogain®, has been suggested for the improvement of wound healing in periodontal surgical therapy. The present qualitative study seeks to illustrate the ultrastructural changes associated with a human gingival wound at 10 days after the application of EMD as an adjunct to a laterally-positioned flap in a patient with gingival recession. An otherwise healthy patient, who had been suffering from bilateral gingival recession defects on teeth #23 and #26, was studied. One defect was treated with a laterally-positioned flap, while the other was treated with a combination of EMD and a laterally-positioned flap. Ten days after the operation gingival biopsy specimens were obtained from the dentogingival region and examined using a transmission electron microscope. A considerable difference was found in both the cellular and extracellular phases of EMD and non-EMD sites. The fibroblasts of EMD site were more rounded with plump cytoplasms and euchromatic nuclei. A well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and numerous mitochondria could be detected. In contrast, the fibroblasts of non-EMD site were of flattened spindle-like morphology. While the signs of apoptosis could rarely be detected at EMD site, apoptotic bodies and ultra-structural evidence of apoptosis (crescent-like heterochromatic nuclei and dilated nuclear envelopes) were consistent features at non-EMD site. The extracellular matrix at EMD site mainly consisted of well-organised collagen fibres, while non-EMD site contained sparse and incompletely-formed collagen fibres. Coccoid bacteria were noted within the extracellular matrix and neutrophils at non-EMD site. It seems that EMD may enhance certain features of gingival wound healing, which may be attributable to its anti-apoptotic, anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory properties

Bilevel Optimization for On-Demand Multimodal Transit Systems

This study explores the design of an On-Demand Multimodal Transit System (ODMTS) that includes segmented mode switching models that decide whether potential riders adopt the new ODMTS or stay with their personal vehicles. It is motivated by the desire of transit agencies to design their network by taking into account both existing and latent demand, as quality of service improves. The paper presents a bilevel optimization where the leader problem designs the network and each rider has a follower problem to decide her best route through the ODMTS. The bilevel model is solved by a decomposition algorithm that combines traditional Benders cuts with combinatorial cuts to ensure the consistency of mode choices by the leader and follower problems. The approach is evaluated on a case study using historical data from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a user choice model based on the income levels of the potential transit riders

Aim: The present study aims to investigate the sources of information and its related factors among pregnant Afghan migrant women who reside in southeast Tehran Province, Iran. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 280 pregnant Afghan women who received care at the prenatal clinics of selected healthcare centres in southeast Tehran Province (Iran) in 2018 enrolled in this study. Data were collected by continuous sampling by a questionnaire that asked about demographic, obstetric and sources of information used during pregnancy. Results: The most important sources of information accessed by pregnant Afghan women were healthcare providers (65.1), family and friends (47.55), the Internet (32.1) and media (18.9). There was statistically a significant relationship between sources of information and education level, number of children, length of residence in Iran, place of birth and insurance status. © 2020 The Authors. Current understanding of hypothalamic amenorrhoea

    Get PDF
Hypothalamic amenorrhoea (HA) accounts for approximately 30% of cases of secondary amenorrhoea in women of reproductive age. It is caused by deficient secretion of hypothalamic gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, which in turn leads to failure of pituitary gonadotrophin and gonadal steroid release. Functional HA (FHA) is defined as HA occurring in the absence of a structural lesion and is predominantly caused by significant weight loss, intense exercise or stress. Treatment of FHA is crucial in avoiding the long-term health consequences on fertility and bone health, in addition to reducing psychological morbidity. This article summarises our understanding of the mechanisms underlying FHA, the evidence base for its clinical management and emerging therapies

OBJECTIVE: Inappropriate life style has destructive effects on sperm quality and, male fertility, so that lifestyle modification may improve spermogram indexes preliminary data. This study aimed to determine the relationship between health life style and spermogram Indicators among infertile men. This analytical descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 199 infertile men. The data were collected through the socio-demographic and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile questionnaires Descriptive statistics independent t-test and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data through SPSS. RESULTS: The mean (standard deviation) of total score of the health promoting lifestyle was (2.39±0.39). The highest mean score was in Health Responsibility subscale (2.51±0.52) and the lowest mean score was in the nutrition subscale (2.24±0.44). Stress management showed significantly correlated with sperm morphology (p=0.025). Also, spiritual growth with the Sperm concentration (p<0.001), and sperm motility (p=0.004) were statistically correlated, and health responsibility dimensions were statistically correlated with the Sperm concentration (p=0.003) and sperm motility (p=0.002). Considering that the mean of total score of the health promoting lifestyle and its correlation with some of spermogram indicators shows a need for improving lifestyle in infertile men who referred to infertility clinics

Single dose systemic methotrexate versus expectant management for treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancy: A placebo-controlled randomised trial

OBJECTIVE: Methotrexate is routinely used worldwide for medical treatment of clinically stable women with tubal ectopic pregnancies. This is despite the lack of robust evidence to show its superior effectiveness over expectant management. The aim of our multicentre randomised trial study was to compare the success rates of methotrexate with placebo for the conservative treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancies. METHODS: The study was multicentre; it took place in three UK early pregnancy units between January 2006 and June 2014. Inclusion criteria were clinically stable women with a conclusive ultrasound diagnosis of a tubal ectopic pregnancy presenting with low serum β-hCG <1500IU/l. Women were randomly assigned to single systemic injection of methotrexate 50mg/m(2) or placebo. The primary outcome of the study was a binary indicator for success of conservative management, defined as resolution of clinical symptoms and decline of serum β-hCG to <20IU/l or negative urine pregnancy test without the need for any additional medical intervention. An intention to treat analysis was followed. RESULTS: We recruited a total of 80 women: 42 to methotrexate and 38 to placebo. The two arms of the study were balanced in terms of age, ethnicity, obstetric histories, pregnancy characteristics and serum β-hCG and progesterone. The proportions of successes were similar: 83% with methotrexate and 76% with placebo. On univariate analysis, this difference was not statistically significant (χ2(1df) = 0.53; P = 0.23). On multivariate logistic regression, β-hCG was the only covariate which was significantly associated with outcome. The odds of failure increased by 0.15% for each unit increase in β-hCG (OR=1.0015; 95% CI 1.0002 to 1.003; P = 0.02). In 14 women presenting with serum hCG 1000-1500IU/l the success of expectant management was 33% compared to 62% in the methotrexate arm. Although this result was not statistically significant a larger sample size would give us greater power to detect a difference in this subgroup of women, In women with successful conservative management there was no significant difference in median resolution times between methotrexate and placebo arms [17.5 days (IQR 14 - 28.0) (n = 30)] vs [14 days (IQR 7 - 29.5) (n = 25)] (P = 0.73) CONCLUSION: The results of our study do not support routine use of methotrexate for the treatment of clinically stable women diagnosed with tubal ectopic pregnancies presenting with low serum hCG <1500IU/l. Further work is required to identify a subgroup of women with tubal ectopic pregnancies and hCG≥1500IU/l in whom methotrexate may offer a safe and cost-effective alternative to surgery
