Big Data -- What Data and Why?

    Get PDF
Data is collected daily and automatically from multitude of sources using all possible formats, stored, and backed up for future use and applications. However, it is less obvious that such an activity will generate a positive economic value when the data is used in mining for strategic advantage. Therefore, the current upward trajectory for collecting and storing data with the expectation of great economic returns might not pan out. The rational way is to analyze all data collection, storage, and analysis proposals using cost and benefit metrics to guarantee that economic benefits for the organization will be the outcome

Hermeneutika: Arah Baru Interpretasi Hadis (Studi Analisis Pemikiran Yusuf Al-qardhawi Dalam Fatwa-fatwanya)

The hermeneutics issues as an alternative interpreting method is a new concern in Islamic World; however its application has existed since long time ago. Generally, Hermeneutics in the religious context especially in Al Qur'an and Al Hadits has a specific purpose to find out the original meaning from a text by using it in the socio-historical context. Yusuf Qardhawi as one of contemporary scholars takes “in between” position in comprehending Hadits or Sunnah. He applies basic principles, characteristics, and essential rules to study it appropriately. He also is considered as a representative from the reformers who contribute their thoughts for Islamic development in order that the religious texts can be more harmonious along with time development but they don't lose their authenticity. Qardhawi's methodology of hermeneutics thought in Hadits always connects between norma tive texts as the law source and their historicity in the socio-historical context in the local muslim community. He sets out his ideas and purposes from the texts of hadits themselves and the tools and applications are adapted with the sociohistorical context of local community

Rapid Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Buildings in the Old Algiers

    Get PDF
The selection of an appropriate seismic vulnerability method to evaluate buildings stock in urban area depends essentially on the available information. Information about buildings can be obtained essentially from field visual inspection. In this context, rapid visual procedure to collect buildings data can be used to identify vulnerable buildings based their structural characteristics. In this study, which aims to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings in the old part of Algiers (Algeria), including Casbah and Bab El Oued areas, buildings data has been collected using rapid visual exterior examination. Then, with the main purpose to evaluate the physical damage and its relationship with the seismic intensity, empirical method using the vulnerability index, previously developed during the European project Risk-UE, is used. Results and conclusions of this work could be useful to define appropriate measures to upgrade seismic performance of existing buildings

Phytochemical Screening and Elemental Analysis of Aqueous and Methanolic Extracts of Datura innoxia Seeds and Leaves

The present study is aimed to screen the phytochemicals analysis and elements content of Datura innoxia seeds and leaves. The aqueous and methanol extracts were carried out by using the maceration method and soxhlet apparatus, respectively. Results of the study of Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of a high concentration of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids and triterpines, and low concentration of saponin and coummarins. The elements in the leaves and seeds (K, Ca, S, Si, Cl, Fe, Al, P, Mg, Ti, Mn, Zn, Sr, Cu, V, Br, and Zr) were determined by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy. K content was the highest in seeds (5.469 ± 0.021%), Ca and S the highest in leaves (2.461 ± 0.019 %, 1.254 ± 0.022 %, respectively). The elements Ti, Mn, Sr, V, Br, and Zr were detected in the leaves with range concentration 0.062-0.002 %. The elements Si, Cl, Fe, Al, P, Mg, and Zn concentration in seeds varied from 0.002 to 0.942% and in leaves varied from 0.014 to 0.346%. The concentration of these elements did not exceed the standard of dangerous toxic levels

Management of Impotence After Treatment of Carcinoma of the Prostate

Impotence commonly occurs as a result of treatment of carcinoma of the prostate. We review the etiology, evaluation, and treatment options available for these patients as well as our experience with fifty prostate cancer patients who underwent placement of penile prostheses. Several excellent alternatives are available for patients with impotence resulting from treatment of carcinoma of the prostate

Sex-specific roles of cellular inflammation and cardiometabolism in obesity-associated depressive symptomatology.

BackgroundObesity and depression are complex conditions with stronger comorbid relationships among women than men. Inflammation and cardiometabolic dysfunction are likely mechanistic candidates for increased depression risk, and their prevalence differs by sex. Whether these relationships extend to depressive symptoms is poorly understood. Therefore, we analyzed sex in associations between inflammation and metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria on depressive symptomatology. Specifically, we examined whether sex positively moderates the relationship between depressive symptoms and inflammation among women, and whether MetS has parallel effects among men.MethodsDepressive symptoms, MetS, and inflammation were assessed in 129 otherwise healthy adults. Depressive symptoms were assessed using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-Ia). Monocyte inflammation regulation (BARIC) was quantified using flow cytometry measurement of TNF-α suppression by β-agonist. Moderation effects of sex on associations between BARIC, MetS criteria, and BDI were estimated using two-way ANOVA and linear regression, adjusting for BMI, and by sex subgroup analyses.ResultsObese individuals reported more depressive symptoms. Sex did not formally moderate this relationship, though BDI scores tended to differ by BMI among women, but not men, in subgroup analysis. Poorer inflammation control and higher MetS criteria were correlated with somatic depressive symptoms. Sex moderated associations between MetS criteria and somatic symptoms; among men, MetS criteria predicted somatic symptoms, not among women. Subgroup analysis further indicated that poorer inflammation control tended to be associated with higher somatic symptoms in women.ConclusionsThese results indicate that obesity-related inflammation and MetS factors have sex-specific effects on depressive symptoms in a non-clinical population. Although pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sex differences remain to be elucidated, our findings suggest that distinct vulnerabilities to depressive symptoms exist between women and men, and highlight the need to consider sex as a key biological variable in obesity-depression relationships. Future clinical studies on comorbid obesity and depression should account for sex, which may optimize therapeutic strategies
