Tsiang Tingfu was a historian and political critic. In the history of the Republic of China, he was also a representative politician in the wave of "scholar-bureaucrat". This thesis focuses on his thoughts and his experiences in the first half of his life when Tsiang exhibited characteristics of maturity and activity in his thinking. In particular, in the 1930s, as one of the leaders of the public opinion in China, he had advocated most of his important thoughts which triggered a heated discussion among the Chinese intellectuals. Through investigating each step in his educational career, we come to the conclusion that both the Chinese traditional culture and the Western education had shaped his later political and social thinking. By examining his principle political thoughts and his social practices, it is also found that the core of his thoughts lies in the nationalism and his intention of Chinese modernization. As the Japanese invasion intensified in China, saving the nation became his superior value and his thought therefore turned to the conservative. In 1935, prompted by the sense of responsibility as an intellectual, Tsiang participated in the Nationalist government and had served it until his retirement

Imagining 5G: Public sensemaking through advertising in China and the US

This study initiates a line of research on how the fifth generation of wireless infrastructure (“5G”) is being imagined through media portrayals—in this case through advertising. At the time of this writing, 5G is not yet widely available, however the media is saturated with narratives about how it will revolutionize everyday life. Drawing from the social imaginaries and media infrastructures traditions, this textual analysis examines the social shaping of 5G through advertisements from leading telecoms in leading markets, including China and the United States. Findings reveal an overarching trend with ads from both societies imagining 5G in futuristic and utopian ways, suggesting new possibilities for people, objects, and places to be connected through smart homes, vehicles, factories, and cities—not just through smart phones. The findings also reveal distinctions in how 5G is envisioned at the societal level. For example, ads from China imagine 5G as a source of national pride that will elevate its global standing, while the US telecoms have a more inward focus on domestic competition. The discussion offers interpretations of these and other findings, along with directions for future research

    Monitoring Energy Consumption of Smartphones

With the rapid development of new and innovative applications for mobile devices like smartphones, advances in battery technology have not kept pace with rapidly growing energy demands. Thus energy consumption has become a more and more important issue of mobile devices. To meet the requirements of saving energy, it is critical to monitor and analyze the energy consumption of applications on smartphones. For this purpose, we develop a smart energy monitoring system called SEMO for smartphones using Android operating system. It can profile mobile applications with battery usage information, which is vital for both developers and users.Comment: The 1st International Workshop on Sensing, Networking, and Computing with Smartphones (PhoneCom), IEEE, Dalian, China, Oct 19-22, 201

Stabilizing the Oxygen Lattice and Reversible Oxygen Redox Chemistry through Structural Dimensionality in Lithium-Rich Cathode Oxides.

Lattice-oxygen redox (l-OR) has become an essential companion to the traditional transition-metal (TM) redox charge compensation to achieve high capacity in Li-rich cathode oxides. However, the understanding of l-OR chemistry remains elusive, and a critical question is the structural effect on the stability of l-OR reactions. Herein, the coupling between l-OR and structure dimensionality is studied. We reveal that the evolution of the oxygen-lattice structure upon l-OR in Li-rich TM oxides which have a three-dimensional (3D)-disordered cation framework is relatively stable, which is in direct contrast to the clearly distorted oxygen-lattice framework in Li-rich oxides which have a two-dimensional (2D)/3D-ordered cation structure. Our results highlight the role of structure dimensionality in stabilizing the oxygen lattice in reversible l-OR, which broadens the horizon for designing high-energy-density Li-rich cathode oxides with stable l-OR chemistry

Simulation and evaluation method of dynamic wetting characteristics of dust suppression droplets on coal surface

Spraying dust suppression liquid on the coal surface is a common dust suppression method for coal-related industrial enterprises, and the wetting process of dust suppression droplets impacting the coal surface is of great significance to the dust suppression effect. In order to study the dynamic wetting process of dust suppression droplets on the coal surface and further evaluate the wetting performance of droplets, the index of dynamic wettability during droplets impacting on the coal surface is proposed. The dynamic wetting process of droplets on the coal surface is investigated based on CLSVOF numerical simulation method. The wetting performance in the process is evaluated by using the dimensionless wetting length and the dimensionless wetting area, and the theoretical expressions of the maximum dimensionless wetting length and the maximum dimensionless wetting area are derived. At the same time, they are compared with the wettability evaluation ability of surface tension. The results show that the CLSVOF method can better simulate the impact and dynamic wetting process of droplets on the coal surface, and can be used to evaluate the dynamic wetting ability of different droplets on the coal surface under different conditions. The droplet drops on the coal surface, and first spreads as a disk. When the maximum spreading is reached, there is a velocity difference between the edge and the center of the disk droplet. When the velocity difference is small, the droplet retracts and coalesces into a sphere. When the velocity difference is large, the droplet breaks and forms many tiny droplets. And the larger the droplet size is, the earlier the breakage behavior appears and the more obvious the phenomenon is. Once the droplet breaks on the coal surface, the dimensionless wetting length and the dimensionless wetting area do not maintain the consistent trend, and the evaluation ability of the dimensionless wetting area is better. When the droplet size is the same, the larger the We number of droplet impacting the coal surface, the better the wetting ability. Increasing the droplet size at the same velocity has less effect on its wetting ability. Compared with surface tension, the dimensionless wetting length and dimensionless wetting area have better ability to evaluate wettability of droplets, which reflects the potential application value in the evaluation and optimization wetting agents
