Microcrystalline silicon growth for heterojunction solar cells
Microcrystalline Si (m-Si) films with a 1.7eV energy bandgap and crystal size of several hundred A were e-beam evaporated on single crystalline Si (c-Si) to form a heterojunction with the substrate, or a window layer to a single crystalline p-n junction (heteroface structure). The goal was to enhance Voc by such uses of the larger bandgap m-Si, with the intriguing prospect of forming heterostructures with exact lattice match on each layer. The heterojunction structure was affected by interface and shunting problems and the best Voc achieved was only 482mV, well below that of single crystal Si homojunctions. The heteroface structure showed promise for some of the samples with p m-Si/p-n structure (the complementary structure did not show any improvement). Although several runs with different deposition conditions were run, the results were inconsistent. Any Voc enhancement obtained was too small to compensate for the current loss due to the extra absorption and poor carrier transport properties of the m-Si film
Ensuring Trust in One Time Exchanges: Solving the QoS Problem
We describe a pricing structure for the provision of IT services that ensures
trust without requiring repeated interactions between service providers and
users. It does so by offering a pricing structure that elicits truthful
reporting of quality of service (QoS) by providers while making them
profitable. This mechanism also induces truth-telling on the part of users
reserving the service
An Effective Model of Magnetoelectricity in Multiferroics
An effective model is developed to explain the phase diagram and the
mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics, . We show
that the nature of magnetoelectric coupling in is a coupling between
two Ising-type orders, namely, the ferroelectric order in the b axis, and the
coupled magnetic order between two frustrated antiferromagnetic chains. The
frustrated magnetic structure drives the system to a
commensurate-incommensurate phase transition, which can be understood as a
competition between a collinear or col-plane order stemming from the `order by
disorder' mechanism and a chiral symmetry order. The low energy excitation is
calculated and the effect of the external magnetic field is analyzed. Distinct
features in the electromagnon spectrums in the incommensurate phase are
predicted
Temperature dependence and resonance effects in Raman scattering of phonons in NdFeAsOF single crystals
We report plane-polarized Raman scattering spectra of iron oxypnictide
superconductor NdFeAsOF single crystals with varying fluorine
content. The spectra exhibit sharp and symmetrical phonon lines with a weak
dependence on fluorine doping . The temperature dependence does not show any
phonon anomaly at the superconducting transition. The Fe related phonon
intensity shows a strong resonant enhancement below 2 eV. We associate the
resonant enhancement to the presence of an interband transition around 2 eV
observed in optical conductivity. Our results point to a rather weak coupling
between Raman-active phonons and electronic excitations in iron oxypnictides
superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Coordinate shift in the semiclassical Boltzmann equation and the anomalous Hall effect
We propose a gauge invariant expression for the side jump associated with
scattering between particular Bloch states. Our expression for the side jump
follows from the Born series expansion for the scattering T-matrix in powers of
the strength of the scattering potential. Given our gauge invariant side jump
expression, it is possible to construct a semiclassical Boltzmann theory of the
anomalous Hall effect which expresses all previously identified contributions
in terms of gauge invariant quantities and does not refer explicitly to
off-diagonal terms in the density-matrix response.Comment: 6 pages, 1 fugure. submitted to PR
Higher-order conservative interpolation between control-volume meshes: Application to advection and multiphase flow problems with dynamic mesh adaptivity
© 2016 .A general, higher-order, conservative and bounded interpolation for the dynamic and adaptive meshing of control-volume fields dual to continuous and discontinuous finite element representations is presented. Existing techniques such as node-wise interpolation are not conservative and do not readily generalise to discontinuous fields, whilst conservative methods such as Grandy interpolation are often too diffusive. The new method uses control-volume Galerkin projection to interpolate between control-volume fields. Bounded solutions are ensured by using a post-interpolation diffusive correction. Example applications of the method to interface capturing during advection and also to the modelling of multiphase porous media flow are presented to demonstrate the generality and robustness of the approach
