A First Evaluation of a Multi-Modal Learning System to Control Surgical Assistant Robots via Action Segmentation

Get PDF
The next stage for robotics development is to introduce autonomy and cooperation with human agents in tasks that require high levels of precision and/or that exert considerable physical strain. To guarantee the highest possible safety standards, the best approach is to devise a deterministic automaton that performs identically for each operation. Clearly, such approach inevitably fails to adapt itself to changing environments or different human companions. In a surgical scenario, the highest variability happens for the timing of different actions performed within the same phases. This paper presents a cognitive control architecture that uses a multi-modal neural network trained on a cooperative task performed by human surgeons and produces an action segmentation that provides the required timing for actions while maintaining full phase execution control via a deterministic Supervisory Controller and full execution safety by a velocity-constrained Model-Predictive Controller

Inhomogeneous Diastereomeric Composition of Mongersen Antisense Phosphorothioate Oligonucleotide Preparations and Related Pharmacological Activity Impairment

Mongersen is a 21-mer antisense oligonucleotide designed to downregulate Mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 7 (SMAD7) expression to treat Crohn's disease. Mongersen was manufactured in numerous batches at different scales during several years of clinical development, which all appeared identical, using common physicochemical analytical techniques, while only phosphorous-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (P-31-NMR) in solution showed marked differences. Close-up analysis of 27 mongersen batches revealed marked differences in SMAD7 downregulation in a cell-based assay. Principal component analysis of P-31-NMR profiles showed strong correlation with SMAD7 downregulation and, therefore, with pharmacological efficacy in vitro. Mongersen contains 20 phosphorothioate (PS) linkages, whose chirality (Rp/Sp) was not controlled during manufacturing. A different diastereomeric composition throughout batches would lead to superimposable analytical data, but to distinct P-31-NMR profiles, as indeed we found. We tentatively suggest that this may be the origin of different biological activity. As similar manifolds are expected for other PS-based oligonucleotides, the protocol described here provides a general method to identify PS chirality issues and a chemometric tool to score each preparation for this elusive feature

Ceftriaxone induced hemolysis complicated by acute renal failure

Over the last decade, second and third generation cephalosporins have been the most common drugs causing hemolytic anemia (HA). Of these cases, 20% have been attributed to ceftriaxone. The clinical presentation of ceftriaxone-induced HA is usually abrupt with sudden onset of pallor, tachypnea, cardio-respiratory arrest and shock. Acute renal failure (ARF) has been reported in 41% of such cases with a high fatality rate. We report a pediatric patient with ARF complicating ceftriaxone-induced HA who survived. Ceftriaxone is a commonly used drug, and early recognition of HA and institution of supportive care, including dialysis is likely to improve the outcome. Technical and Functional Validation of a Teleoperated Multirobots Platform for Minimally Invasive Surgery

Get PDF
Nowadays Robotic assisted Minimally Invasive Surgeries (R-MIS) are the elective procedures for treating highly accurate and scarcely invasive pathologies, thanks to their abil- ity to empower surgeons’ dexterity and skills. The research on new Multi-Robots Surgery (MRS) platform is cardinal to the development of a new SARAS surgical robotic platform, which aims at carrying out autonomously the assistants tasks during R- MIS procedures. In this work, we will present the SARAS MRS platform validation protocol, framed in order to assess: (i) its technical performances in purely dexterity exercises, and (ii) its functional performances. The results obtained show a prototype able to put the users in the condition of accomplishing the tasks requested (both dexterity- and surgical-related), even with rea- sonably lower performances respect to the industrial standard. The main aspects on which further improvements are needed result to be the stability of the end effectors, the depth per- ception and the vision systems, to be enriched with dedicated virtual fixtures. The SARAS’ aim is to reduce the main surgeon’s workload through the automation of assistive tasks which would benefit both surgeons and patients by facilitating the surgery and reducing the operation time

The human footprint on Earth has witnessed a remarkable change over the years, with a steady population growth accentuating our presence on the globe, inevitably leading to significant shifts in our lifestyles and daily behaviors. The increase in global interconnections and the evolution of daily comforts have resulted in a growing demand for natural resources to meet human needs and fuel an ever-expanding consumerism. This mounting pressure has had a considerable impact on the animal ecosystem, exponentially increasing the demand on the meat and animal derivatives industry. The world of intensive farming represents a reality today where animals live in degrading conditions and are exploited solely for industrial purposes without adequate ethical consideration. This supply chain also has a significant critical impact on the planet, contributing significantly to deforestation and environmental pollution. The research project in question aims to examine globally available data in literature regarding the intensive farming industry, exploring its cultural, ethical, anthropological, and environmental implications. Particular attention is devoted to examining new innovations in the sector that seek to address current challenges to improve human life prospects and reduce negative environmental impact

This dissertation is part of a research project led by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Padova. Such project is meant to study the romanization’s processes of Greece through archaeological and architectural data. The dissertation aims at understanding the features, the modalities and the meanings of the cultural transformation of Greece after the Roman conquest. It studies the sacred landscape focusing on its religious, political and social role in the Greek world. The investigation is centred on Northern Greece (Macedonia, Thessaly and Epirus) and covers the period starting with the Roman military campaign in Greece (early II cent. B.C.) and ending with the disappearance of sanctuaries due to the establishment of Christian religion (late IV cent. A.D.). The research is constituted by two sections. The first gathers the analysis of all the sacred areas identified in the three regions, with the complete collection of the archaeological, epigraphical and literary data in chronological order. The second part consists in four chapters examining and interpreting the phenomena emerged from the analysis of the sanctuaries: the first three chapters present a regional and a synthetic picture of the sacred landscape in the age of the conquest, in the early imperial age and in the middle-late imperial age; the last chapter is thematically organised and studies some important features at cultual, technical and political-ideological level. Besides systematizing the study of the sanctuaries in this large and important geographical area, the research has underlined a series of interesting processes (clearly reflected in the history of the sacred areas) that clarify the relationships among Greek and Roman world during the centuries.
