Materials for advanced turbine engines. Volume 1: Advanced blade tip seal system
Project 3, the subject of this technical report, was structured toward the successful engine demonstration of an improved-efficiency, long-life, tip-seal system for turbine blades. The advanced tip-seal system was designed to maintain close operating clearances between turbine blade tips and turbine shrouds and, at the same time, be resistant to environmental effects including high-temperature oxidation, hot corrosion, and thermal cycling. The turbine blade tip comprised an environmentally resistant, activated-diffussion-bonded, monocrystal superalloy combined with a thin layer of aluminium oxide abrasive particles entrapped in an electroplated NiCr matrix. The project established the tip design and joint location, characterized the single-crystal tip alloy and abrasive tip treatment, and established the manufacturing and quality-control plans required to fully process the blades. A total of 171 blades were fully manufactured, and 100 were endurance and performance engine-tested

Thermal barrier coatings application in diesel engines
Commercial use of thermal barrier coatings in diesel engines began in the mid 70's by Dr,. Ingard Kvernes at the Central Institute for Industrial Research in Oslo, Norway. Dr. Kvernes attributed attack on diesel engine valves and piston crowns encountered in marine diesel engines in Norwegian ships as hot-corrosion attributed to a reduced quality of residual fuel. His solution was to coat these components to reduce metal temperature below the threshold of aggressive hot-corrosion and also to provide protection. The Department of Energy has supported thermal barrier coating development for diesel engine applications. In the Clean Diesel - 50 Percent Efficient (CD-50) engine for the year 2000, thermal barrier coatings will be used on piston crowns and possibly other components. The primary purpose of the thermal barrier coatings will be to reduce thermal fatigue as the engine peak cylinder pressure will nearly be doubled. As the coatings result in higher available energy in the exhaust gas, efficiency gains are achieved through use of this energy by turbochargers, turbocompounding or thermoelectric generators
Pain control options for first trimester surgical abortions: a review
Pain control is a significant issue for women undergoing gynecological procedures including first trimester surgical abortion. Pain perception is a complex phenomenon which impacts the selection of analgesia. We present a review on the efficacy of various pain control modalities for first trimester surgical abortion in the clinical setting

Probing the Sensitivity of Electron Wave Interference to Disorder-Induced Scattering in Solid-State Devices
The study of electron motion in semiconductor billiards has elucidated our
understanding of quantum interference and quantum chaos. The central assumption
is that ionized donors generate only minor perturbations to the electron
trajectories, which are determined by scattering from billiard walls. We use
magnetoconductance fluctuations as a probe of the quantum interference and show
that these fluctuations change radically when the scattering landscape is
modified by thermally-induced charge displacement between donor sites. Our
results challenge the accepted understanding of quantum interference effects in
nanostructures.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Physical Review

Clinical Outcomes of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in the Treatment of Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia
Since its introduction by Leksell, Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has become increasingly popular as a management approach for patients diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia (TN). For this reason, we performed a modern review of the literature analyzing the efficacy of GKRS in the treatment of patients who suffer from TN. For patients with medically refractory forms of the condition, GKRS has proven to be an effective initial and repeat treatment option. Cumulative research suggests that patients treated a single time with GKRS exhibit similar levels of facial pain control when compared to patients treated multiple times with GKRS. However, patients treated on multiple occasions with GKRS are more likely to experience facial numbness and other facial sensory changes when compared to patients treated once with GKRS. Although numerous articles have reported MVD to be superior to GKRS in achieving facial pain relief, the findings of these comparison studies are weakened by the vast differences in patient age and comorbidities between the two studied groups and cannot be considered conclusive. Questions remain regarding optimal GKRS dosing and targeting strategies, which warrants further investigation into this controversial matter
Ancient Origins of a Modern Anthropic Cosmological Argument
Ancient origins of a modern anthropic argument against cosmologies involving
infinite series of past events are considered. It is shown that this argument -
which in modern times has been put forward by distinguished cosmologists like
Paul C. W. Davies and Frank J. Tipler - originates in pre-Socratic times and is
implicitly present in the cyclical cosmology of Empedocles. There are traces of
the same line of reasoning throughout the ancient history of ideas, and the
case of a provocative statement of Thucydides is briefly analyzed. Moreover,
the anthropic argument has been fully formulated in the epic of Lucretius,
confirming it as the summit of ancient cosmology. This is not only of
historical significance but presents an important topic for the philosophy of
cosmology provided some of the contemporary inflationary models, particularly
Linde's chaotic inflation, turn out to be correct.Comment: 11 pages, no figures; Astronomical and Astrophysical Transactions,
