Optimal Interest Rate Rules in Inflation Targeting Frameworks
This work describes the main characteristics of an inflation targeting regime and derives the optimal solution for interest rates according to an original methodology for two models based on the Phillips and IS curves containing general exogenous variables and a complete loss-function.
r-filters: a Hodrick-Prescott Filter Generalization
A two-parameter family of filters is proposed in which the HP filter is considered as the lowest order member. While the HP filter converges to linear time trend as the smoothing factor grows, the higher order members of the proposed family converge to higher order polynomial time trends. The filter order - the new parameter introduced - allows to set the filter selectivity. Furthermore, two different methods to implement these filters are presented.
Does it Take a Lula to go to Davos? A Brief Overview of Brazilian Reforms, 1980-2000
What are the determinants of economic reform efforts? This paper tries to throw light on this question by examining recent reforms in Brazil, a country which followed a gradualist approach and was a late-starter among Latin American economies. We argue that these first generation reforms (trade liberalization, stabilization, privatization and the adoption of a new macro-policy framework) were driven by the drastic growth slowdown and redemocratization of the 1980s. We argue that their gradual and democratic implementation not only respond for their sustainability but also shows that the country is ready for a second generation of reforms focusing explicitly on institutional deficiencies.Reform, Stabilization, Economic Policy, Growth, Brazil
Lateral Resistance of Buried Pipes by Frictional Limit Analysis
Pipelines are vital means of transportation of liquids and gases over large geographical areas. Regarding buried pipes, they are submitted to thermal and mechanical loads due to their support conditions, pipe-soil friction and the surrounding soil mass. Under high compressive loads carried out by these efforts, loss of stability and buckling may occur. Then, the evaluation of soil lateral resistance that will cause a imminent breakout is important. This work aims the analysis of the soil lateral resistance by frictional limit analysis formulation, considering the soil mass as a deformable body and the pipe as a rigid one. An yield function considering material porosity and material friction angle is considered. The soil lateral resistance forces obtained from the proposed formulation are compared to a those ones considering the limit analysis lower bound found in literature. The fully bounded condition observed in most models is also discussed
A Fully Attention-Based Information Retriever
Recurrent neural networks are now the state-of-the-art in natural language
processing because they can build rich contextual representations and process
texts of arbitrary length. However, recent developments on attention mechanisms
have equipped feedforward networks with similar capabilities, hence enabling
faster computations due to the increase in the number of operations that can be
parallelized. We explore this new type of architecture in the domain of
question-answering and propose a novel approach that we call Fully Attention
Based Information Retriever (FABIR). We show that FABIR achieves competitive
results in the Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) while having fewer
parameters and being faster at both learning and inference than rival methods.Comment: Accepted for presentation at the International Joint Conference on

The generation of new samples is a current challenge of artificial intelligence. Generator models have tried for a long time to solve this problem, but the complexity faced was such that few models were developed. With increasing computational power and deep learning techniques, this area flourished again. The Generator Adversarial Networks (GANs) represent the state of the art generator models, providing high quality samples. However, the quality of existing materials affects the full understanding of this technique. In this work, all the main theoretical and practical aspects of these models are seen, with the realization of experiments to support and validate the theory. Finally, a GAN state of the art is used to solve a current problem: super-resolution imaging, field that enhance the resolution of an imaging system.

Abstract: Computer supported cooperative work applications can be characterized by the style of group interactions among their users. In this context, it is essential the provision of mechanisms that offer suitable support to structure applications in terms of cooperating object groups. This work proposes a model of a group support service to be used as a tool for building cooperative applications. The model provides mechanisms to consistently maintain group membership, as well as to support the coordination and transparency of group communication. The work is based on the ISO Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) and its implementation uses resources from the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), allowing the services to be used in a heterogeneous computing environment. It is also described the implementation of a prototype, in the Multiware Platform environment, which provides the basic services from the group support model.MestradoMestre em Ciência da Computaçã
