Troublesome Tinnitus in Children: Epidemiology, Audiological Profile, and Preliminary Results of Treatment
Introduction. Although tinnitus often has a significant impact on individual's life, there are still few reports relating to tinnitus in children. In our tinnitus clinic, children with distressing tinnitus constitute about 0,5% of all our patients.
Objectives. The aim of this study was to analyse children with troublesome tinnitus as regards epidemiology, audiological profile, and preliminary effects of the therapy.
Methods. A retrospective study was carried out involving the cases of 143 children consulted in our Tinnitus Clinic in 2009. The selected group with troublesome tinnitus was evaluated and classified for proper category of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT).
Results. The study showed that 41.3% of the children suffered from bothersome tinnitus. In this group 44.1% of the patients demonstrated normal hearing. The success of the therapy after 6 months was estimated on 81.4% of significant improvement.
Conclusions. It is recommended that a questionnaire include an inquiry about the presence of tinnitus during hearing screening tests
On the Effect of DCE MRI Slice Thickness and Noise on Estimated Pharmacokinetic Biomarkers – A Simulation Study
Simulation of a dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE MRI) multiple sclerosis brain dataset is described. The simulated images in the implemented version have 1×1×1mm3 voxel resolution and arbitrary temporal resolution. Addition of noise and simulation of thick-slice imaging is also possible. Contrast agent (Gd-DTPA) passage through tissues is modelled using the extended Tofts-Kety model. Image intensities are calculated using signal equations of the spoiled gradient echo sequence that is typically used for DCE imaging. We then use the simulated DCE images to study the impact of slice thickness and noise on the estimation of both semi- and fully-quantitative pharmacokinetic features. We show that high spatial resolution images allow significantly more accurate modelling than interpolated low resolution DCE images.acceptedVersio
Algorytmy przetwarzania obrazów dla potrzeb oceny i diagnozy wodogłowia u dzieci
This paper presents a concept of image processing and analysis algorithms for an automatic assessment of hydrocephalus in children's brain. Presented research was inspired by the medical need for tools performing an automatic (or at least semi-automatic) detection and quantitative evaluation of this lesion. Algorithms for precise segmentation of hydrocephalus and determination of its volume from three dimensional CT brain scans were introduced. Specifically, for brain and hydrocephalus segmentation, region growing approach was proposed. Results of applying the developed method to real CT data sets were presented and discussed. The analysis of the results show that in future, the proposed algorithms can be helpful tool for diagnosis of hydrocephalus.W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono koncepcję wykorzystania algorytmów przetwarzania i analizy obrazów do automatycznej oceny i diagnostyki wodogłowia u dzieci. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje rezultaty zastosowania proponowanych algorytmów do rzeczywistych danych obrazowych pochodzących z tomografu komputerowego. Analiza otrzymanych rezultatów pokazuje, że proponowane algorytmy mogą stanowić użyteczne narzędzie diagnostyczne do detekcji i oceny wodogłowia u dzieci
Enhancement of low-dose CT scans
W artykule rozważono problem poprawy jakości obrazów z tomografu komputerowego, uzyskanych z wykorzystaniem niskich dawek promieniowania. W szczególności, przetestowano popularne algorytmy przetwarzania wstępnego (m.in. algorytm filtracji anizotropowej, średnich nielokalnych, przesunięcia do średniej) oraz przeanalizowano skuteczność ich działania. Oceny jakości poprawy dokonano w oparciu o sztucznie wygenerowane zakłócenia, symulujące artefakty towarzyszące w obrazach TK niskim dawkom promieniowania. Do ilościowego porównania stopnia poprawy jakości wykorzystano takie miary, jak błąd średniokwadratowy oraz indeks strukturalnego podobieństwa. In this paper the problem of enhancement of low-dose CT scans was considered. In particular, popular pre-processing algorithms (such as anisotropic diffusion filter, non-local means filter, mean-shift filter) were tested and analyzed. The assessment of image quality improvement was performed based on the artificially generated artifacts, similar to those appearing in low-dose CT scans . Their effectiveness was investigated using the image quality measures, such as the mean square error and the structural similarity index
Interaktywna segmentacja płynu mózgowo-rdzeniowego z obrazów tomograficznych mózgu z wykorzystaniem technik grafowych
Inaccuracy of the manual assessment of brain diseases forces medicine to look for a new solutions. The key factor in the diagnosis of many brain lesions is an accumulation, volume and pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in ventricles and cavities of the brain. In this paper, the problem of segmentation of the CSF is regarded. Specifically, the min-cut/max-flow algorithm is investigated and applied to several CT scans. The results reveals that this approach may provide a basis for further quantitative analysis of brain lesions.Niedoskonałość manualnych metod diagnostycznych w ocenie zmian chorobowych w obszarze mózgu sprawia, że współczesna medycyna poszukuje nowych rozwiązań. Jednym z kluczowych wskaźników postępu choroby jest nagromadzenie, objętość i ciśnienie płynu mózgowo-rdzeniowego (PMR). Artykuł rozważa problem segmentacji PMR z obrazów tomograficznych. Prezentowane podejście bazuje na interaktywnym algorytmie segmentacji opartym na grafach, którego skuteczność daje podstawy do późniejszej, wiarygodnej analizy ilościowej danego schorzenia
A Novel Deep Learning Approach for Liver MRI Classification and HCC Detection
International audienceThis work proposes a deep learning algorithm based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture to detect HepatoCellular Carcinoma (HCC) from liver DCE-MRI (Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI) sequences. The Deep Learning technique is an artificial intelligence technique (AI) that tries to imitate the human brain work in the training data and creating models used for decision. Actually, it is widely used for various clinical issues. To diagnose HCC, radiologists consider three different phases during contrast injection (before injection; arterial phase; portal phase for instance). This paper presents an approach that offers a parallel preprocessing algorithm. It allows HCC detection and localization in MRI images via a CNN algorithm. The created CNN model reached an accuracy level of 90% in both arterial and portal phases using MRI patches of 64×64 pixels. We mention also its ability to decrease false detection comparing with our previous works. The obtained good accuracy is considered to be ameliorated in our future works
