    Modern submarine canyon feeder-system and deep-sea fan growth in a tectonically active margin (northern Sicily)

    Widely used sequence stratigraphic models predict that specific facies assemblages alternate in the stratigraphy of deep-sea fans, depending on the cyclic nature of sea-level variations. Our work tests this assumption through facies reconstruction of submarine fans that are growing in a small basin along the tectonically active Sicilian margin. Connected canyons have heads close to the coastline; they can be river connected or littoral cell-connected, the first receiving sediment from hyperpycnal flows, the latter intercepting shelf sediment dispersal pathways. Hyperpycnal flows directly discharge river-born sediment into the head of the river-connected canyon and originate a large turbidite fan. A drift formed by the longshore redistribution of sediment of a nearby delta introduces sediment to the head of the littoral cell-connected canyon, forming turbidity currents that flow within the canyon to reach the basin plain. However, since sediment failure and landslide processes are common in the slope part of the system, a mixed fan, consisting of both turbidites and mass-transport deposits, is formed. Disconnected canyons, with heads at the shelf edge far from the coastline, are fed by canyon head and levee-wedge failures, resulting in mass-transport or mixed fan deposition, the latter developing when the seafloor gradient or the lithology of the failed sediment allows turbidity current formation. Connected canyons form in areas with high uplift rates, where the shelf is narrow and steep and the shelf edge is at a relatively shallow depth. Disconnected canyons develop where there are lower uplift rates or subsidence, where the shelf is large and relatively gentle with a deeper shelf edge. It is deduced that the relative vertical movements of fault-bound blocks control whether canyons are connected to the coast at the present day. The role of tectonics in controlling the canyon feeding processes and the facies of submarine fan growth during highstand periods is therefore highlighted. A further view that arises from our paper is that in active margins, the slope portion of fan systems, through seafloor instability and variations in channel gradient, is a key factor in determining the final deep-sea fan facies, regardless of the distance between the coast and the canyon. The concomitant growth of turbidites, mass-transport deposits, and mixed fans demonstrates that models that predict changes in submarine fan facies on the basis of sea-level cycles do not necessarily apply to systems developed along tectonically active margins

    Ergonomics and Workflow Evaluation of Automatic Doppler Angle Technology Implemented in a Diagnostic Ultrasound System

    AbstractCommonly available Pulsed Wave Doppler (PW) flow velocity measurements for Ultrasound (US) investigation require the operator to manually set the direction of the flow velocity vector along the blood vessel axis on the US image, in order to determine the Doppler angle and then to estimate the real flow velocity. The present work investigates the possibility to implement on a commercially available US system an innovative Automatic Doppler Angle (ADA) Technology by analyzing the best workflow in terms of higher execution speed, lower keystrokes/adjustments helping in the prevention of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSD) and a Doppler angle correction precision, comparable to the one obtained manually by expert sonographer. Ergonomics and workflow tests, then accuracy and repeatability evaluations of the Doppler velocity measurement, were performed on a portable US system (MyLabAlpha, Esaote S.p.A., Florence, Italy) by an expert sonographer. Ergonomics and workflow Tests were performed to analyze the potential of ADA in terms of reduction of muscular activation applied (by SEMG), number of activations (by cameras optoelectronic system) and time needed using ADA, in comparison to manual procedure. Accuracy and intra-operator repeatability tests of the velocity measurement were performed to evaluate the precision of the obtained PW trace velocity measurements with ADA technology, compared to manual ones. Results provided evidence that ADA tool allowed: a reduction of muscular activation (from 12% for trapezius descendens, to 25% for deltoideus anterior) a lower total number of keystrokes and a reduction of the US scan time of about 56%. The maximal variation between PW Doppler trace velocity measurement set automatically by ADA and set manually by sonographer was 11%. ADA technology can provide a Doppler angle correction precision comparable to the manual one, while decreasing the risk of WRMSD

    Venting and seepage systems associated with mud volcanoes and mud diapirs in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea

    High resolution swath bathymetry and backscatter data, seismic CHIRP profiles, multibeam water column acoustic measurements and sediment samples were collected on a cold seep province in the southeastern Tyrrhenian Sea, at a water depth of 500-1000. m. The mud volcanoes, characterized by a high backscatter signature, are the site of gas venting at the seafloor that formed a 630-m-high plume in the water column. The mud volcanoes feature a precipitation of iron-oxy-hydroxide crusts and pyritized and Sulfur burrows in the sub-surface and authigenic siderites, also cementing burrows, further down, showing a sharp transition from the oxic zone toward the sulfate-methanogenic zone.The mud flows are characterized by an intermediate backscatter seafloor and by the presence of gas in the sediment only 2. m below the seafloor. The mud flows consist of 1-m-thick drapes of water-rich mud extending downslope from the mud volcanoes. They act as sealing layers that prevent large fluxes of gas venting at the seafloor (low venting) and favor oxic conditions close to the sediment-water interface and the abundant precipitation of post-oxic siderites a few meters below the seafloor.The mud diapirs are characterized by a low backscatter seafloor and large fields of pockmarks. In coincidence with the normal faults, organogenic carbonate crusts form at or very close to the seafloor and are associated with chemosymbiontic bivalves (lucinids). The youngest shells are AMS radiocarbon dated 640-440. BP, suggesting that the seepage activity may have been clogged by the carbonates, only very recently.Similarities between the normal faults in the study area and the tectonic setting of the inland Calabrian Arc show that normal faults can control the location of fluid pathways and, probably, also the rising of the mud diapir

    Bacterial communities in the fruiting bodies and background soils of the white truffle Tuber magnatum

    Tuber magnatum Pico is a greatly appreciated truffle species mainly distributed in Italy. Its price and characteristics are mostly depending on its geographical origin. Truffles represent a fundamental step of the life cycle of Tuber species promoting spore dissemination and consists of two main parts, gleba, the inner part, and peridium, which is in direct contact with ground soil. Within truffle, and around in the growing soils, both occurrence and abundance of different microbial species, seem to play an essential role in truffle production. The development of the next-generation sequencing (NGS) based technology has greatly improved to deepen the role of the composition of microbial communities, thus improving the knowledge on the existing relationships between microbial taxa in a specific condition. Here, we applied a metabarcoding approach to assess differences in T. magnatum samples collected from three areas from Tuscany (Italy). Peridium and gleba were analyzed separately, with the aim to distinguish them basing on their microbial composition. Also, soil samples were collected and analyzed to compare productive and unproductive truffle grounds to confirm the presence of specific patterns linked to truffle production. Results indicate that differences occurred between truffle compartments (gleba and peridium) as well as between analyzed soils (productive and unproductive), with distinctive taxa associated. Furthermore, findings also demonstrated specific characteristics associated with truffle collection areas, thus indicating a degree of microbial selection related to different environments
