Study on an hp‐Adaptive Finite Element Solver for a Chemo‐Mechanical Battery Particle Model
We consider a Cahn–Hilliard-type phase-field model for phase separation and large deformations in battery electrode particles. For the numerical solution we employ an hp-adaptive finite element solution algorithm coupled to a variable-step, variable-order time stepping scheme. Numerical experiments show the adaptive meshing and distribution of the locally varying polynomial degrees of the finite element method. In particular, for a sufficient large range of polynomial degrees we achieve significant computational savings compared to an h-adaptive algorithm

Parallelization of a finite element solver for chemo-mechanical coupled anode and cathode particles in lithium-ion batteries
Two chemo-mechanical coupled models for electrode particles of lithium-ion batteries are compared. On the one hand a CahnHilliard-type phase-field approach models lithium intercalation, phase separation and large deformations in phase transforming cathode materials like lithium iron phosphate. On the other hand a chemo-mechanical particle model for lithium intercalation and large deformations for an anode material such as silicon is studied. The comparison of two different ways to define the deformation gradient for the large deformation approach and the two different material properties lead to differences in the resulting quantities and equations for the coupling of the chemo-mechanical model. The usage of an adaptive solution algorithm as well as the parallelization of the finite element solver via the message passing interface concept results in a more reasonable computation time to perform two-dimensional simulations. Both materials are numerically investigated and the results are compared from a physical point of view. When fast charging a battery, higher stress values are reached, which can cause a shorter cycle life. A strong scalability analysis shows good performance for the assembling, however a saturation occurs in the performance of the solver used

Deep Chandra Observations of Edges and Bubbles in the NGC 5846 Galaxy Group
We use a combined 120 ks Chandra exposure to analyze X-ray edges produced by
non-hydrostatic gas motions (sloshing) from galaxy collisions, and cavities
formed by AGN activity. Evidence for gas sloshing is seen in the spiral
morphology and multiple cold front edges in NGC 5846's X-ray surface brightness
distribution, while lack of spiral structure in the temperature map suggests
the perturbing interaction was not in the plane of the sky. Density and
spectral modeling across the edges indicate the relative motion of gas in the
cold fronts is at most transonic. Evidence for AGN activity is seen in two
inner bubbles at 0.6 kpc, filled with 5 GHz and 1.5 GHz radio plasma and
coincident with Halpha emission, and in a ghost bubble at 5.2 kpc west of NGC
5846's nucleus. The outburst energy and ages for the inner (ghost) bubbles are
~10^{55} ergs and ~2 Myr (~ 5 x 10^{55} ergs and 12 Myr), respectively,
implying an AGN duty cycle of 10 Myr. The inner bubble rims are threaded with 9
knots, whose total 0.5-2 keV X-ray luminosity is 0.3 x10^{40} ergs, a factor
~2-3 less than that of the surrounding rims, and 0.7 keV mean temperature is
indistinguishable from that of the rims. We suggest that the knots may be
transient clouds heated by the recent passage of a shock from the last AGN
outburst. We also observe gas stripping from a cE galaxy, NGC 5846A, in a 0.5
kpc long (~10^5 Msolar) hot gas tail, as it falls towards NGC 5846.Comment: 18 pages, 26 figures, ApJ, in pres
Feasibility Study of a Wearable Exoskeleton for Children: Is the Gait Altered by Adding Masses on Lower Limbs?
We are designing a pediatric exoskeletal ankle robot (pediatric Anklebot) to promote gait habilitation in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Few studies have evaluated how much or whether the unilateral loading of a wearable exoskeleton may have the unwanted effect of altering significantly the gait. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether adding masses up to 2.5 kg, the estimated overall added mass of the mentioned device, at the knee level alters the gait kinematics. Ten healthy children and eight children with CP, with light or mild gait impairment, walked wearing a knee brace with several masses. Gait parameters and lower-limb joint kinematics were analyzed with an optoelectronic system under six conditions: without brace (natural gait) and with masses placed at the knee level (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 kg). T-tests and repeated measures ANOVA tests were conducted in order to find noteworthy differences among the trial conditions and between loaded and unloaded legs. No statistically significant differences in gait parameters for both healthy children and children with CP were observed in the five “with added mass” conditions. We found significant differences among “natural gait” and “with added masses” conditions in knee flexion and hip extension angles for healthy children and in knee flexion angle for children with CP. This result can be interpreted as an effect of the mechanical constraint induced by the knee brace rather than the effect associated with load increase. The study demonstrates that the mechanical constraint induced by the brace has a measurable effect on the gait of healthy children and children with CP and that the added mass up to 2.5 kg does not alter the lower limb kinematics. This suggests that wearable devices weighing 25 N or less will not noticeably modify the gait patterns of the population examined here.Cerebral Palsy International Research FoundationStavros S. Towards a muon collider
A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work
