    A Financialized Monetary Economy of Production

    The monetary theory of production offers a systemic approach to describe systemic crises, but, faced with contemporary capitalism, it needs to be modified. In accordance with the Schumpeterian perspective, we adopt a framework that points to both the monetary nature of and qualitative changes in the capitalist system. The low level of wages, and the consequent underconsumption, is not the unique cause of the 2007–9 crisis. Not only has financialization changed the behavior of consumer-savers, but investment has also changed. The overfinanced leverage that was an important characteristic of the crisis may be better understood historically with the emergence of the 1990s’ technological paradigm. The crisis stems mainly from overinvestment in new technologies. Particularly during the 1990s, the emerging industrial technology favored its own sort of financing. The financialization of the monetary economy of production can be better explained if we understand the shift to a new technological paradigm as a general outlook on the productive problems faced by firms, whereby the relevance of the so-called immaterial production takes on greater importance. To describe this dynamic, we present two different analytical forms of the monetary economy of production: the first one represents the new economy scenario, and the second one represents the financialized monetary circuit during the real estate bubble

    Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) damages the parts of the brain that control speech and language. There are three clinical PPA variants: nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA), logopenic (lvPPA) and semantic (svPPA). The pathophysiology underlying PPA variants is not fully understood, including the role of micro (mi)RNAs which were previously shown to play a role in several neurodegenerative diseases. Using a two-step analysis (array and validation through real-time PCR), we investigated the miRNA expression pattern in serum from 54 PPA patients and 18 controls. In the svPPA cohort, we observed a generalized upregulation of miRNAs with miR-106b-5p and miR-133a-3p reaching statistical significance (miR-106b-5p: 2.69 ± 0.89 mean ± SD vs. 1.18 ± 0.28

    Experiences on corrosion inhibitors for reinforced concrete

    Corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement is the most important cause of premature failure on reinforced concrete structures. Prevention of corrosion is primarily achieved in the design phase by using high quality concrete and adequate cover. Additional prevention methods are adopted when severe environmental conditions occur or on structures requiring very long service life. Among these methods, corrosion inhibitors seem to offer a simple and cost effective prevention technique. They may be used both as a preventative techniques, if added to fresh concrete, and as a repair system, if applied on hardened concrete. The performance of corrosion inhibitors for reinforced concrete structures affected by chloride induced and carbonation corrosion has been studied at PoliLaPP, Laboratory of Corrosion of materials "P. Pedeferri" of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "G. Natta", Politecnico di Milano, in the last 15 years. Organic commercial admixed corrosion inhibitors delayed the occurrence of chloride induced corrosion. This result is related to two effects: reduction of the rate of chloride transport into concrete and increase of the critical chloride threshold. Commercial migrating corrosion inhibitors (MCI) are able to delay time-to-corrosion of passive rebars in concrete subjected to chlorides ponding; this effect is mainly related to the reduction of chlorides diffusion coefficient. MCI can reduce the corrosion rate after corrosion initiation only in carbonated concrete, nevertheless efficiency is low and residual corrosion rate is not negligible. Commercial MCI can penetrate into concrete mainly through capillary sorption but penetration depth is limited to 20 mm. The results obtained with nitrite-based inhibitor confirm literature data: the inhibitor is effective if the molar ratio [NO2 ]/[Cl ] is higher than 0.5-0.6; in carbonated concrete, due to insufficient amount of inhibitor, no significant effect has been observed on corrosion rate. Among the tested organic substances, compounds containing carboxylic group showed the best results solution tests: pitting potential, time-to-corrosion and critical chloride content are similar to those obtained with sodium nitrite. In concrete tests, only one amine and one amino acid showed good performance increasing the critical chlorides threshold with respect to the reference condition.     PRNP P39L variant is a rare cause of frontotemporal dementia in Iialian population

    The missense P39L variant in the prion protein gene (PRNP) has recently been associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, we analyzed the presence of the P39L variant in 761 patients with FTD and 719 controls and found a single carrier among patients. The patient was a 67-year-old male, with a positive family history for dementia, who developed apathy, short term memory deficit, and postural instability at 66. Clinical and instrumental workup excluded prion disease. At MRI, bilateral frontal lobe atrophy was present. A diagnosis of FTD was made, with a mainly apathetic phenotype. The PRNP P39L mutation may be an extremely rare cause of FTD (0.13%)

    We investigated whether progranulin plasma levels are predictors of the presence of progranulin gene (GRN) null mutations or of the development of symptoms in asymptomatic at risk members participating in the Genetic Frontotemporal Dementia Initiative, including 19 patients, 64 asymptomatic carriers, and 77 noncarriers. In addition, we evaluated a possible role of TMEM106B rs1990622 as a genetic modifier and correlated progranulin plasma levels and gray-matter atrophy. Plasma progranulin mean ± SD plasma levels in patients and asymptomatic carriers were significantly decreased compared with noncarriers (30.5 ± 13.0 and 27.7 ± 7.5 versus 99.6 ± 24.8 ng/mL, p 61.55 ng/mL, the test had a sensitivity of 98.8% and a specificity of 97.5% in predicting the presence of a mutation, independent of symptoms. No correlations were found between progranulin plasma levels and age, years from average age at onset in each family, or TMEM106B rs1990622 genotype (p > 0.05). Plasma progranulin levels did not correlate with brain atrophy. Plasma progranulin levels predict the presence of GRN null mutations independent of proximity to symptoms and brain atrophy

    Frailty, psychological well-being, and social isolation in older adults with cognitive impairment during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: data from the GeroCovid initiative

    Background: The containment measures linked to the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the phyco-physical well-being of the population, especially older adults with neurocognitive disorders (NCDs). This study aims to evaluate whether the frailty of NCD patients was associated with different changes in multiple health domains, in particular in relation to loneliness and social isolation, pre- and post-lockdown. Materials and methods: Patients were recruited from 10 Italian Centers for Cognitive Disorders and Dementia. Data were collected in the pre-pandemic period (T0), during the pandemic lockdown (T1), and 6-9 months post-lockdown (T2). The UCLA Loneliness Scale-3, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental ADL (IADL), Mini-Mental State Examination, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) were administered. Caregivers' burden was also tested. Patients were categorized as non-frail, pre-frail, and frail according to the Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illness, and Loss of Weight scale. Results: The sample included 165 subjects (61.9% women, mean age 79.5 ± 4.9 years). In the whole sample, the ADL, IADL, and NPI scores significantly declined between T0 and T2. There were no significative variations in functional and cognitive domains between the frail groups. During lockdown we recorded higher Depression Anxiety Stress Scales and Perceived Stress Scale scores in frail people. In multivariable logistic regression, frailty was associated with an increase in social isolation, and a loss of IADL. Conclusions: We observed a global deterioration in functional and neuro-psychiatric domains irrespective of the degree of frailty. Frailty was associated with the worsening of social isolation during lockdown. Frail patients and their caregivers seemed to experience more anxiety and stress disorders during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic
