Predicting leptonic CP violation in the light of Daya Bay result

In the light of the recent Daya Bay result the reactor angle is about 9 degrees, we reconsider the model presented in arXiv:1005.3482 showing that, when all neutrino oscillation parameters are taken at their best fit values of Schwetz et al and the reactor angle to be the central value of Daya Bay, the predicted value of the CP phase is approximately 45 degrees.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, update of arXiv:1005.348

Universal Texture of Quark and Lepton Mass Matrices and a Discrete Symmetry Z_3

    Get PDF
Recent neutrino data have been favourable to a nearly bimaximal mixing, which suggests a simple form of the neutrino mass matrix. Stimulated by this matrix form, a possibility that all the mass matrices of quarks and leptons have the same form as in the neutrinos is investigated. The mass matrix form is constrained by a discrete symmetry Z_3 and a permutation symmetry S_2. The model, of course, leads to a nearly bimaximal mixing for the lepton sectors, while, for the quark sectors, it can lead to reasonable values of the CKM mixing matrix and masses.Comment: 24 pages, RevTEX, no figure, some references and comments were adde

corr2D: Implementation of Two-Dimensional Correlation Analysis in R

    Get PDF
In the package corr2D two-dimensional correlation analysis is implemented in R. This paper describes how two-dimensional correlation analysis is done in the package and how the mathematical equations are translated into R code. The paper features a simple tutorial with executable code for beginners, insight into the calculations done before the correlation analysis, a detailed look at the parallelization of the fast Fourier transformation based correlation analysis and a speed test of the calculation. The package corr2D offers the possibility to preprocess, correlate and postprocess spectroscopic data using exclusively the R language. Thus, corr2D is a welcome addition to the toolbox of spectroscopists and makes two-dimensional correlation analysis more accessible and transparent

Can the Lepton Flavor Mixing Matrix Be Symmetric?

    Get PDF
Current neutrino oscillation data indicate that the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing matrix V is likely to be symmetric about its V_{e3}-V_{\mu 2}-V_{\tau 1} axis. This off-diagonal symmetry corresponds to three pairs of {\it congruent} unitarity triangles in the complex plane. Terrestrial matter effects can substantially modify the genuine CP-violating parameter and off-diagonal asymmetries of V in realistic long-baseline experiments of neutrino oscillations.Comment: RexTex 14 pages (4 PS figures). Non-Universal Correction To ZbbˉZ \to b {\bar{b}} And Flavor Changing Neutral Current Couplings

A non-universal interaction associated with top quark induces flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) among light fermions. The size of the FCNC effect depends crucially on the dynamics of the fermion mass generation. In this paper, we study the effect of a non-universal interaction on ZbbZ b b, ZbsZ b s {\it etc}, by using an effective lagrangian technique and assuming the quark mass matrices in the form of a generalized Fritzsch ansatz. We point out that if fitting RbR_b to the LEP data within 1σ1 \sigma, the induced FCNC couplings are very close to the experimental limits.Comment: 9 pages, Te

    Gauge Unification In Six Dimensions

We study the breaking of a supersymmetric SO(10) GUT in 6 dimensions by orbifold compactification. In 4 dimensions we obtain a N=1 supersymmetric theory with the standard model gauge group enlarged by an additional U(1) symmetry. The 4-dimensional gauge symmetry is obtained as intersection of the Pati-Salam and the Georgi-Glashow subgroups of SO(10), which appear as unbroken subgroups in the two 5 dimensional subspaces, respectively. The doublet-triplet splitting arises as in the recently discussed SU(5) GUTs in 5 dimensions.Comment: Latex2e, 9 pages, 1 figure; references added, to be published in Phys. Lett

Time-resolved spectroscopy of the excited electronic state of reaction centers of Rhodopseudomonas viridis

    Get PDF
The spectral properties of the excited electronic state of the reaction centers of Rhodopseudomonas (Rps.) viridis are studied by dichroic transient absorption spectroscopy with sub-picosecond time resolution. The theoretical analysis of the experimental results allows the assignment of the transient absorption from two dimer bands of the special pair and show its excitonic coupling to other pigments

Long-Distance Three-Color Neuronal Tracing in Fixed Tissue Using NeuroVue Dyes

    Get PDF
Dissecting development of neuronal connections is critical for understanding neuronal function in both normal and diseased states. Charting the development of the multitude of connections is a monumental task, since a given neuron typically receives hundreds of convergent inputs from other neurons and provides divergent outputs for hundreds of other neurons. Although progress is being made utilizing various mutants and/or genetic constructs expressing fluorescent proteins like GFP, substantial work remains before a database documenting the development and final location of the neuronal pathways in an adult animal is completed. The vast majority of developing neurons cannot be specifically labeled with antibodies and making specific GFP-expressing constructs to tag each of them is an overwhelming task. Fortunately, fluorescent lipophilic dyes have emerged as very useful tools to systematically compare changes in neuronal networks between wild-type and mutant mice. These dyes diffuse laterally along nerve cell membranes in fixed preparations, allowing tracing of the position of a given neuron within the neuronal network in murine mutants fixed at various stages of development. Until recently, however, most evaluations have been limited to one, or at most, two color analyses. We have previously reported three color neuronal profiling using the novel lipophilic dyes NeuroVue (NV) Green, Red and Maroon (Fritzsch et al., Brain. Res. Bull. 66:249–258, 2005). Unfortunately such three color experiments have been limited by the fact that NV Green and its brighter successor, NV Emerald, both exhibit substantially decreased signal intensities when times greater than 48 hours at 37°C are required to achieve neuronal profile filling (unpublished observations). Here we describe a standardized test system developed to allow comparison of candidate dyes and its use to evaluate a series of 488 nm-excited green-emitting lipophilic dyes. The best of these, NV Jade, has spectral properties well matched to NV Red and NV Maroon, better solubility in DMF than DiO or DiA, improved thermostability compared with NV Emerald, and the ability to fill neuronal profiles at rates of 1 mm per day for periods of at least 5 days. Use of NV Jade in combination with NV Red and NV Maroon substantially improves the efficiency of connectional analysis in complex mutants and transgenic models where limited numbers of specimens are available

    On dynamics of fermion generations

The hierarchy of fermion masses and EW symmetry breaking without elementary Higgs is studied on the basis of strong gauge field distributions governing the EW dynamics. The mechanism of symmetry breaking due to quark bilinears condensation is generalized to the case, when higher field correlators are present in the EW vacuum. Resulting wave functional yields several minima of quark bilinears, giving masses of three (or more) generations. Mixing is suggested to be due to kink solutions of the same wave functional. For a special form of this mixing ("coherent mixing") a realistic hierarhy of masses and of CKM coefficients is obtained and arguments in favor of the fourth generation are given. Possible important role of topological charges for CP violating phases and small masses of the first generation is stressed.Comment: 31 pages, typos corrected, references adde

A possible origin of superconducting currents in cosmic strings

    Get PDF
The scattering and capture of right-handed neutrinos by an Abelian cosmic string in the SO(10) grand unification model are considered. The scattering cross-section of neutrinos per unit length due to the interaction with the gauge and Higgs fields of the string is much larger in its scaling regime than in the friction one because of the larger infrared cutoff of the former. The probability of capture in a zero mode of the string accompanied by the emission of a gauge or Higgs boson shows a resonant peak for neutrino momentum of the order of its mass. Considering the decrease of number of strings per unit comoving volume in the scaling epoch the cosmological consequences of the superconducting strings formed in this regime will be much smaller than those which could be produced already in the friction one.Comment: 14 pages Latex, 4 figues/ep
