A HEL testbed for high accuracy beam pointing and control

    Get PDF
High energy laser (HEL) weapons are some of most challenging military applications in the future battle fields since the speed of light delivery enables the war fighter to engage very distant targets immediately. The issues of the technology on the HEL system include various types of high energy laser devices, beam control systems, atmospheric propagation, and target lethality. Among them, precision pointing of laser beam and high-bandwidth rejection of jitters produced by platform vibrations are one of the key technologies for the emerging fields of laser communications and HEL systems. HEL testbed has been developed to support the research environments on the precision beam control technology including acquisition, tracking, and pointing. The testbed incorporates optical table, two axis gimbal, high speed computers, and a variety of servo components, sensors, optical components, and software. In this report, system configuration and operation modes of the testbed are briefly introduced. The results of the experiments and integrated modeling from component to system level are described and discussed. Based on these results, new control algorithms are designed and it is shown that the algorithm can improve the pointing performance of the system.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Abstract. Referring to various studies, journals, books, and reviews, this research proposes six dimensions which are reflective dimensions or indicators of taxpayer compliance, these six dimensions will be tested using confirmatory factor analysis with the help of SmartPLS software to obtain dimensions and or indicators that can explain The concept of taxpayer compliance. The results obtained through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) show the estimation results loading factor forming Taxpayer Compliance which consists of six dimensions of the Effectiveness of Taxation System, Tax Sanctions, Knowledge Tax, Service Quality, Tax Inspection, and Taxpayer Awareness. From the weight dimensions obtained visible dimensions of Service Quality is the most dominant dimension in establishing Taxpayer Compliance. The dimension that gives the least influence in forming Taxpayer Compliance is the effectiveness of Taxation System. Keywords: Taxpayer compliance Abstrak. United States Senate Catalogue of Graphic Art

This volume is the first comprehensive publication of the almost one thousand prints in the holdings of the United States Senate. The collection represents a 30-year effort to document graphically the 19th and early 20th century history of the Senate, the Capitol, and American political history. The diverse illustrations range from inauguration ceremonies and impeachment trials to senatorial portraits and political cartoons. Represented in the Senate\u27s graphic art collection are some of the most notable artists who worked in the printmaking medium: Augustus Kallner, Rembrandt Peale, Alexander Hay Ritchie, Thomas Nast, and Joseph Keppler. While visually engaging, these prints also are important primary historical records. By carefully scrutinizing a print, in the same way a historian might analyze a journal or diary, one can extract the meaning of the artist and decode the historical subtext. Often, the elements omitted by the artist in an image are just as important as those that are included. As a research tool, the graphic art collection has been invaluable to historians and scholars for many years. This publication seeks to broaden the appeal of the collection by making the information available to a wider audience. Essays by Senate Curator Diane K. Skvarla and Associate Senate Historian Donald A. Ritchie provide an overview of the collection, with selected prints highlighted throughout the book. This is the second volume dedicated to the Senate\u27s art and historic collections. In 2002 the Senate published the United States Senate Catalogue of Fine Art, presenting the 160 paintings and sculptures in the Senate\u27s fine art collection

Left main bronchus resection and reconstruction. A single institution experience

Abstract

Background

Left main bronchus resection and reconstruction (LMBRR) is a complex surgical procedure indicated for management of inflammatory, benign and low grade malignant lesions. Its application provides maximal parenchymal sparing.

Methods

Out of 98 bronchoplastic procedures performed at the Authors' Institution in the 1995-2011 period, 4 were LMBRR. Indications were bronchial carcinoid in 2 cases, inflammatory pseudotumor in 1 case, TBC stricture in 1 case. All patients underwent preoperatively a rigid bronchoscopy to restore the airway lumen patency. At surgery a negative resection margin was confirmed by frozen section in the neoplastic patients. In all patients an end-to-end bronchial anastomosis was constructed according to Grillo.

Results

There were neither mortality nor major complications. Airway lumen was optimal in 3 patients, good in 1.

Conclusion

LMBRR is a valuable option for the thoracic surgeon. It maximizes the parenchyma-sparing philosophy, broadening the spectrum of potential candidates for cure. It remains a technically demanding procedure, to be carried out by an experienced surgical team. Correct surgical planning affords excellent results, both in the short and long term.</p

Diagnostic aids in the screening of oral cancer

The World Health Organization has clearly indentified prevention and early detection as major objectives in the control of the oral cancer burden worldwide. At the present time, screening of oral cancer and its pre-invasive intra-epithelial stages, as well as its early detection, is still largely based on visual examination of the mouth. There is strong available evidence to suggest that visual inspection of the oral mucosa is effective in reducing mortality from oral cancer in individuals exposed to risk factors. Simple visual examination, however, is well known to be limited by subjective interpretation and by the potential, albeit rare, occurrence of dysplasia and early OSCC within areas of normal-looking oral mucosa. As a consequence, adjunctive techniques have been suggested to increase our ability to differentiate between benign abnormalities and dysplastic/malignant changes as well as to identify areas of dysplasia/early OSCC that are not visible to naked eye. These include the use of toluidine blue, brush biopsy, chemiluminescence and tissue autofluorescence. The present paper reviews the evidence supporting the efficacy of the aforementioned techniques in improving the identification of dysplastic/malignant changes of the oral mucosa. We conclude that available studies have shown promising results, but strong evidence to support the use of oral cancer diagnostic aids is still lacking. Further research with clear objectives, well-defined population cohorts, and sound methodology is strongly required
